At their meeting with General Callahan, Scully brought up the similar case of Staff Sergeant Akelin, whose family had died 6 months prior in a house fire. Akelin then received psychiatric treatment, saying he wanted to die but someone wouldn't let him, before throwing himself into a wood chipper on the hospital grounds.

He walked to the hall to look for the man who'd said it, but no one was there. As he stood in the doorway, his answering machine started playing ineligible speaking. Callahan pushed stop, then unplugged it, but couldn't get the noise to stop until he'd taken the tape out.

He'd broken in to steal some mail, which he then delivered to Trimble. Freely was sloppy, though, and left fingerprints at the house, which the agents used to find him. They arrested him in his apartment, where they then found mail from all the victims.

He was in a solitary cell and apparently stuffed his sheet down his throat. Mulder didn't think it was suicide, though, and suggested that "Rappo" Trimble was practicing astral projection.

Talking to Stans, Callahan held his gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired every time. Then he walked down to Trimble's room.

Trimble wanted him to, encouraging him to "fire at will," but Callahan stood down, telling him that he'd have to suffer like the rest of them. After Callahan left the room, though, Trimble left his body to confront Callahan in the basement.
