Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 58 Works released a puzzle game for iOS devices in 2011 in which the player must figure out how to open a succession of numbered doors. The difficulty increases with each sequential door. Which of the games below fits the description?

Answer: DOOORS

Door number one only requires the player to tap the door for it to open, but the puzzles become more difficult and the clues become scarcer. One interesting note is that it's not just about input but may also require that the phone be titled, shaken or even turned upside down in order to open a door.

The first release of the game was for iPad and iPhone, but it was later released for Android devices as well. This was the first puzzle escape game released by 58 Works.
2. In the adventure "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door", Princess Peach sends a map to Mario. The Thousand-Year Door and the map must be used together to indicate where Mario must search for which of the items listed below?

Answer: Crystal Star

The Magical Map was purchased by Princess Peach in Rogueport and sent to Mario before she was kidnapped by the X-Nauts. Each time Mario approaches the Thousand-Year Door with the map and a Crystal Star, the location of the next Crystal Star will be revealed. The door will not open until all of the Crystal Stars have been found. Legend says that treasure lies behind the Thousand-Year Door, but what Mario finds instead is the entrance to the Palace of Shadow.

"Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door" was released in 2004 by Nintendo for the GameCube.
3. In the survival horror genre of games, "Resident Evil" allows a player to choose which character they will be. As the game begins the player is trapped in the eerie entrance hall of Spencer Mansion. Though the player will have to open many doors, which door must the player go through first?

Answer: Dining Hall door

When starting this game, the player has the ability to choose whether they will play as Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, both of whom are members of Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) Alpha Team. In the Dining Hall the character will find the object necessary to gain access to the next location. You need to keep your character alive fighting zombies and intentionally-bred species of Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W.) in order to leave alive. Many of the doors will require one of the four mansion keys, but the player must find them.

"Resident Evil" was originally released for PlayStation in 1996. The game was popular and that fueled the creation of many sequels on many gaming platforms. In fact, this game became so popular that novels, movies and comic books were created around the same premise.
4. In the game "999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors", Junpei awakes on a ship to find that he has been kidnapped along with eight others. They can only survive by playing the Nonary Game and finding the "9" door within nine hours. Which of these devices do they find near each numbered door?

Answer: REDs and DEADs

The doors all have a Recognition Device (RED) and Deactivation Device (DEAD). Each of the persons has a numbered bracelet. The RED has a scanner and a lever. The lever cannot be used to open the door until the digital root of the scanned bracelets equals the door number (luckily Junpei finds a file explaining how to calculate the digital root). Once the door is open the bracelets must be scanned by the DEAD to deactivate each bracelet's detonator.

The game was released by Chunsoft for the Nintendo DS in Japan (2009) and the U.S. (2010). The game is categorized as a visual novel, and includes puzzles that must be solved to "escape" a room and cutscenes which are there to tell the narrative. There are multiple endings possible depending on the player's choices.
5. The video game "Portal" requires the player, as the character Chell, to proceed through the numbered testing chambers. The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device can be used to create portals through which she and other objects can pass. Which of the below is true about the portals she creates?

Answer: Momentum is maintained when passing through portals

During the game the player must learn how to fling themselves through portals in order to be successful. The player can create a portal on a floor and another above an area that the player wants to fly over. With enough momentum, as when created by jumping through the portal from far above, the player will enter the first portal and be flung out of the second. Interestingly, the player can also pass through the portals multiple times to gain additional momentum.

Some of the original concepts were created by DigiPen Institute of Technology students in the game "Narbacular Drop". One of the Valve Corporation's developers saw the game at a career fair and eventually Valve offered jobs to the developing team to continue working on the game. The game was released in 2007 for Xbox 360 and as part of "The Orange Box" for MS Windows.
6. With the premise inspired by Japanese folklore and beginning many years ago, "Ōkami" allows players to control Amaterasu, a Celestial Brush god in the shape of a white wolf. What is the name of the one-eyed demons that are found locking doors at several locations, that Amaterasu can only open with an Exorcism Key?

Answer: Lockjaw

The Lockjaw cannot be defeated except by inserting an Exorcism Key into its one eye. The lock will then explode and disintegrate the door.

The game artwork is all created in Japanese ink wash painting style. In addition, Amaterasu's tail is depicted as a calligraphy brush and can be used (while the ink lasts) as a tool to create effects such as rejuvenation of broken objects, creation of a cherry bomb, or even quenching a fire (to mention only a few).

This game was developed at Clover Studio and first released by Capcom on the PlayStation 2 platform in Japan and North America in 2006.
7. The Hero from the small town of Oakvale, found in southern Albion, must complete specific quests in the game "Fable". During his travels he will come upon several Demon Doors, each with specific requirements to be met before opening. How does the Hero know what requirements there are for each door?

Answer: The Demon Doors speak

Each Demon Door will tell the Hero what's required before it will open. It may be spoken clearly or in a riddle. The requirement might be just an answer or a specific achievement. Once the requirement is met, the Demon fades into the stone and door slides open. Behind each door one or more items will be found.

An interesting part of this game play is that the actions of the Hero affect others' reactions and his appearance. A "good" Hero will have a halo over his head, but an "evil" Hero will grown horns.

"Fable" was originally published for Xbox in 2004, and subsequently ported to other platforms. The game has also seen several sequels, all centered in Albion but in different time periods.
8. As "Batman: Arkham Asylum" begins, Batman escorts the Joker to the Asylum for incarceration, though the Joker soon escapes from his guards and mayhem ensues. Remarkably, it took approximately six months for players to find Warden Quincy Sharp's hidden room. What method is used to create a "door" to enter the room?

Answer: Explosives placed on the wall

Amazingly, players did not find this room until the creators posted information about it. No information was provided as to how Warden Sharp accessed the room, and Batman had to blow a hole in a wall before he could enter. Once inside, the player can view blueprints for Arkham City, which would be the subject of the sequel.

The game was released in 2009 by Rocksteady Studios for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. This was the first of what has become a series of games to star Batman by Rocksteady Studios.
9. James Sunderland returns to Silent Hill ("Silent Hill 2") after receiving a letter from his dead wife which reads: "In my restless dreams, I see that town-Silent Hill. You promised you'd take me there again someday. But you never did. Well, I'm alone there now...In our special place...Waiting for you..." While searching for answers, James comes across the Lady of the Door inside Brookhaven Hospital. Which of these is true about the lady?

Answer: She's a painting with 3D arms and hands

In "Silent Hill 2" Brookhaven Hospital is a deserted and decaying mental hospital. The lady is found painted on a door on the third floor, but her arms and hands extend from the painting to collect the items necessary to open the door. The clue for how to open the door is a poem which can be found in one of the patient rooms on the same floor.

This Konami Digital Entertainment game was originally released on PlayStation 2 in 2001, and later ported to other formats. Many, but not all, of the Silent Hill series were set in the fictional town of Silent Hill, Maine.
10. As "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" begins, Link finds a mark on his hand and goes to Impa for advice. Impa shows Link how to open "The Door That Does Not Open" by touching it with his marked hand, but what does he find on the other side?

Answer: Zelda

When Link opens the door he finds Princess Zelda sleeping under a curse invoked by a now dead Magician. Impa tells Link that the mark on his hand shows that he is the one chosen to wake the sleeping princess.

We also find out in this sequel that all of the princesses have been named Zelda in remembrance of the first Zelda who refused to tell her secret.

This game was the second release in "The Legend of Zelda" series and follows chronologically after the first. It was first released by Nintendo in 1987 in Japan for the Family Computer (Famicom) Disk System, and later released in the U.S. and Europe. This has continued to be a very popular series and the new games have moved back and forth in chronological time, each telling a part of the overall story.
