Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with "Guitar Hero", one of the most popular music/rhythm series out there. Over the years, the series has had its share of developers, but who actually made the first "Guitar Hero" game?

Answer: Harmonix

The "Guitar Hero" series has been widely successful, allowing gamers and non-gamers, amateurs and seasoned guitar players to join in the fun. Using a special guitar controller, the objective is to copy the notes displayed on screen by pressing the corresponding buttons in conjunction with the strummer on the guitar. Several games in the series feature only music from a specific band, such as Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen. Harmonix has created a wide variety of games, including the "Rock Band" series, "Dance Central", the iPod game "Phase" and "EyeToy: Antigrav".
2. Naturally, there have been numerous spin-offs of the "Guitar Hero" series, including an IP created by FreeStyleGames utilising a turntable peripheral. What is this series called?

Answer: DJ Hero

Hit the decks and bust out some phat beats, yo. "DJ Hero" is a spin-off of the "Guitar Hero" series and features similar gameplay mechanics. To play, a special turntable controller is needed, with three buttons for each track, a revolving plate, a crossfade and effects dial.

The music mixes in the games are usually two songs laid over the top of each other to create a funky beat. Then, using the controller, the aim is to replicate the instructions on screen, including scratching and crossfading.
3. Give your vocal chords a workout with the "SingStar" series, originally for the PlayStation 2, and now on the PlayStation 3. Which of these games is not part of the series?

Answer: SingStar AC/DC

The "SingStar" series introduced a new way to play games by allowing players to sing along to popular songs and measure their pitch and volume and score appropriately. While it started on the PlayStation 2, it has since extended to the PlayStation 3, with the introduction of the SingStore, where music can be downloaded and played.

Many other games, such as "Rock Band" feature microphones and vocal analysis in the games.
4. The popular arcade game "Dance Dance Revolution" is produced by which Japanese company?

Answer: Konami

This well-known arcade game features a platform with arrows pointing up, down, left and right, and players are required to step on the respective arrow as the on-screen prompts occur. One of the more popular games in the arcade, two people can battle it out side by side to see who can dance the best. Konami has since expanded the game to home consoles, with a dance mat replacing the platform found in arcades.
5. Available on Steam is which indie music game that analyses a music file and generates a colored highway with peaks and troughs according to the song?

Answer: Audiosurf

Developed by Dylan Fitterer, "Audiosurf" analyses a chosen piece of music and generates a highway which reflects the music. For instance, a fast, loud section of music will result in a mostly downhill highway; similarly, a slow, quiet piece will be mostly uphill. Coloured blocks on the highway are hit in sync with the music and points are awarded for creating combinations of these blocks. Any song in your music library can be loaded and played, allowing for a new gaming experience every time you play.
6. "Dance Central", a rhythm and music game that monitors your movements, was released in late 2010 for which system?

Answer: Xbox 360

First shown at E3 2010 and released as a launch title for Microsoft's Kinect, "Dance Central" uses the motion-tracking hardware in the Kinect to detect your dance moves and compare them to those on the screen. Many modern upbeat dance tracks, as well as some classic funky tunes, are included in the game and also in the XBox Live Marketplace.
7. Nintendo released "Wii Music" for its then-newest home console, allowing players to play a wide range of instruments by using only the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk. Can the Wii Balance Board be used as well?

Answer: Yes

"Wii Music" features music from several Nintendo games, as well as some licensed music and traditional/classical music. Brass, woodwind, string, percussion and many more instruments can be played with the controllers in time with the music. Although it hasn't been as popular as many of the other music games on the market, it shows off the flexibility of the Wii and its motion controls.

The Balance Board can be used in the drum mode to control the pedals on the drumkit.
8. Gaijin Games are the creators of the indie rhythm-based "Bit.Trip" series. Which game was first in the series?

Answer: Bit.Trip Beat

The "Bit.Trip" series is centred around chiptunes and hitting objects or dodging obstacles in time with the music. Vibrant colours and sometimes distracting backgrounds add to the uniqueness of this series. "Bit.Trip Runner" is the fourth title in the series (and my favourite, but that's irrelevant), and although it is a platformer, it still retains the core music gameplay. By pressing various buttons, you can make your character, Commande Video, jump, slide, kick and deflect. If an obstacle is hit, the level must be restarted.
9. Developed by Zoe Mode as part of the OneBigGame charity, "Chime" is a sort of fusion between "Tetris" and "Lumines". On which of these platforms is "Chime" not available?

Answer: Wii (WiiWare)

Published by OneBigGame, the world's first not-for-profit video games publisher, "Chime" involves rotating and placing various shapes to form clusters called 'quads'. A beatline moves across the play area in time with the music and wipes out any completed quads, at which point a music sample will play. Several songs are used in the game, including some from Philip Glass, Moby, and "Still Alive", the ending song by Jonathan Coulton from Valve's 2007 hit "Portal".
10. Which Nintendo DS game was developed by iNiS and features characters from a fictional government agency who help people in crisis by dancing?

Answer: Elite Beat Agents

"Elite Beat Agents" centres around performing dance moves to motivate citizens of the city. The stylus and touch screen are used to hit the corresponding beats. Many well-known songs are included in the game, however, they are covers and not the originals. Such songs include "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai, "Y.M.C.A." by the Village People, and "ABC" by The Jackson 5.
