quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 2009 game allows players to choose between being heroic or villainous with the protagonist Cole MacGrath's newly-acquired electrical powers?

Answer: InFamous

Once a humble courier in Empire City, Cole MacGrath was at the heart of a destructive Ray Sphere explosion which cut off Empire City from the rest of America and imbued him with the power to manipulate and control electricity. While he is given many opportunities throughout the game to use his powers for good or evil, he ultimately has to do battle with the mastermind behind the Ray Sphere project. Karma plays a central role in 'InFamous', with Cole able to perform many actions which affect his reputation and how the citizens of Empire City view him. Good actions like healing pedestrians and saving people from enemies award good karma, while going on destructive rampages with little concern for others will earn bad karma.
2. In which 2010 quick-time event-heavy thriller do players unravel a serial murder plot and influence the outcome of the game based on the success or failure of their actions throughout?

Answer: Heavy Rain

Described as a psychological thriller, 'Heavy Rain' puts players in the role of four central characters, each with ties to the mysterious Origami Killer. All actions are performed as a result of failing or succeeding quick-time events (that is, brief visual cues for button inputs). Certain actions will affect the overall ending, such as letting someone die during a fight or not escaping from a certain situation quickly enough. Developer Quantic Dream followed up the success of 'Heavy Rain' in 2013 with another story-driven quick-time button masher, 'Beyond: Two Souls', which featured Willem Dafoe and Ellen Page as the two main characters.
3. In which epic space RPG do players influence which of their squad lives or dies based on their relationships in the game's climactic 'suicide mission'?

Answer: Mass Effect 2

Squad members are recruited by playing through story missions in 'Mass Effect 2'. Players are given the option of strengthening their squad members' loyalty by completing their loyalty missions. In order for as many squad members to survive the 'suicide mission' as possible, players will need to ensure that their loyalty is at its maximum. Conversing with them, gaining their trust and developing your relationship is key to having the highest chances of getting through the 'suicide mission' unscathed in terms of squad numbers.

This climactic mission sees players fly the Normandy space ship through the Omega 4 Relay, travelling across space to an ominous and dangerous Collector base near a collapsing black hole.
4. Although it's a minor choice, you can either opt to save the Little Sisters of Rapture or harvest them for their ADAM in which action-packed video game set in an underwater city?

Answer: BioShock

Conditioned to retrieve the ADAM from the blood of dead Splicers, Little Sisters are orphaned (and sometimes kidnapped) young girls from the city of Rapture. Little Sisters are always accompanied by a hulking great creature (known as a Big Daddy) in what looks like a modified version of one of those old metal diving suits.

These Big Daddies will do anything to protect their Little Sisters if they are attacked. Harvesting the Little Sisters will provide the player with more ADAM and the ability to use more Plasmids, but this will result in a more negative ending for the game. Conversely, not harvesting them will result in less ADAM for the player but much stronger and otherwise unobtainable powers will await later in the game.
5. Which 2011/2012 video game revolves around Vincent Brooks and his nightmarish predicament involving his girlfriend and his titular mistress?

Answer: Catherine

After meeting Catherine one night at a bar, Vincent begins having nightmares (as many young men in the area have also had recently) in which he must survive, else he dies in real life. His interactions with his girlfriend, Katherine, and his lover, Catherine, will affect the game's karma meter and, ultimately, the game's outcome. Eight possible endings exist, wherein Vincent either chooses to be with Katherine, Catherine or neither.
6. In which heavily-hyped 2004 video game can the player's actions determine whether they are considered good or evil, and one of the final choices of the game involves keeping or destroying the Sword of Aeons?

Answer: Fable

Starting as a young boy, the central Hero becomes older and more skilled during his time with the Heroes' Guild and goes on to defeat the Jack of Blades, who destroyed the Hero's hometown many years ago. Many karmic choices present themselves throughout the game, several of which include deciding whether to kill or spare someone.

These choices affect how the Hero looks and is perceived by the inhabitants of the land of Albion. The game was notable, in part, due to the massive hype campaign led by Lionhead Studios founder Peter Molyneux. Upon its release, 'Fable' didn't have quite as many features as Molyneux had suggested, but the game was praised nonetheless.
7. You'd better watch out for the Regulators or Talon Company. Based on your actions and deeds, one of the two might come after you wherever you are in which 2008 open-world RPG?

Answer: Fallout 3

As ever with games with a karma system, you start out in 'Fallout 3' with 0 karma, or Neutral. Based on your following actions and interactions with the post-apocalyptic Capital Wasteland, you can either raise you karma to Good and Very Good, or lower it to Evil and Very Evil, or even remain Neutral for the entire game. Good players will have to fend off ambushes from Talon Company, while Evil players will have to face the Regulators. Players who can strike a balance between Good and Evil and remain impartial will find they'll have no such dealings with these factions.
8. The first in one of gaming's most popular survival horror series, which game puts players in the role of Harry Mason as he explores a creepy town in the middle of nowhere, and has four different endings (as well as a fifth "joke" ending involving aliens)?

Answer: Silent Hill

After his daughter goes missing, Harry Mason sets out to find her, and discovers some disturbing things about the mysterious town of Silent Hill. Awash with fog, demonic disturbances and psychological horror, 'Silent Hill' is considered to be one of the greats of the genre.

The game's ending is determined by Harry's actions throughout the game (like choosing to save or kill one of the townsfolk when they become possessed). The infamous joke ending can only be unlocked on a New Game + (a second playthrough), as an item called the Channelling Stone only becomes available in this new game. Aliens carry off Harry after he uses the Channelling Stone in five separate locations around Silent Hill.
9. Which 'Sonic' video game, first released in 1993, allows you to end the game in a "good future" or a "bad future"?

Answer: Sonic the Hedgehog CD

Utilising the power of Time Stones, Sonic needs to complete various stages throughout three time periods (past, present and future) in order to halt Dr. Robotnik's plans for controlling the Stones and time itself. The "good future" sees Robotnik's plans foiled and the Time Stones returned to Little Planet.

The "bad future" ending will reverse all Sonic's actions and return Little Planet to its vulnerable, captive state, meaning that Sonic will need to try again in order to create a "good future".
10. John Marston, a reformed outlaw in the Wild West, can raise or lower his Honour by performing various deeds and actions in which popular 2010 game by Rockstar?

Answer: Red Dead Redemption

In an era rife with outlaws and criminals, players can decide whether to make Marston side with the authorities and perform honourable actions or aid his former outlaw brethren and become involved in dishonourable acts. Each has its own pros and cons, like better rewards from bounties when honourable, and discounts on goods from shady sellers when dishonourable. Of course, players can remain neutral and neither gain nor lose honour by wearing a bandana, which will conceal Marston's identity.
