The first game in the 'Grand Theft Auto' series came out in 1997 and has had numerous sequels. The gameplay involves the criminal underworld and features violence and assassinations, causing some criticism. The 'Burger Shot' restaurant chain appeared in several of the games and was based on the real life 'Burger King' franchise.

'BurgerTime' was an early arcade game, which originally came out in 1982. The company which created it was Data East Corporation, based in Tokyo, Japan, abbreviated to DECO. The company was in business from 1976 but went into liquidation in 2003. The DECO cassette system was one of the earliest to offer arcade owners the option of different games on cassettes, although they were far from reliable.

'Fast Food Tycoon' came out in 2000 and allowed the player to develop a strategy based on cookery and business skills. The player could individualise menus, locations, advertising and business plans to maximise profits. You could also involve the criminial underclass, although this brought its own risks.

The game was named 'Pizza Syndicate' for the European market based on the food product in the game.

The game was released in 2010 for the mobile devices, iPhone and iPad. It then became available on other hand held systems and was released for the Xbox 360 in 2011. It involves the use of a blade, controlled by a touch screen, to slice different kinds of fruit, scoring points in the process.

It was reported in 2012 that the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, was 'addicted' to the game.

The game involves preparing food, using the touch screen on the DS, including slicing vegetables, cooking the food and serving it on a plate. Failure incurs the wrath of Mama, who has to fix it. A version, called 'Cooking Mama: Cook Off', was developed for the Wii in 2007.

The other systems offered as options were much older. The Sega Master System came out in 1985 and the original PlayStation dates from 1994. The Commodore 64 was around from 1982 until 1994.

'Cake Mania' is a strategy game which is available on many systems, including the Nintendo DS, PCs, Wii and mobile phones. The player, as Jill, has to fulfil cake orders for an increasing number of customers, while trying to keep each one happy so they do not leave without their goodies.

The game was brought out in 2008 for the Wii games system. It was modelled on the New York based Major League Eating franchise which governs competitive eating contests. The game allows the player to compete against well known personalities from competitive eating to eat as much as possible over twelve rounds. I feel queasy just writing about it, without any attempt to play the game.

The game is inspired by the television series which featured Gordon Ramsay, and is available for Nintendo DS, PC and Wii. The player is responsible for all aspects of the restaurant including taking the orders, serving customers and cooking the food. At the same time, you have to avoid incurring the wrath of the virtual Gordon Ramsay who has a notoriously short fuse.

The other options are well known British chefs, although it's hard to imagine Delia swearing at anyone.

All the fruits listed appear during the game, but I have to confess that I've never seen anything other than cherries. 'Pac-Man' was one of the early arcade games, and first appeared in 1980. It is instantly recognisable to most people, even those who never play video games.

'Diner Dash' is a strategy and time management game, where you play as the character called Flo. You have to look after customers and make sure they are fed on time which enables you to make a profit and extend your restaurant empire. The game was developed in New York by GameLab and first came out in 2003. It is available on most gaming platforms, including mobile phones.
