Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ah yes, the dreaded 8-Bits, those villainous villains from "Super Mario Bros 2". In the original instruction manual published with the game, a few of the minor baddies were listed as members of the 8-Bits (also known as the 8-Bits Club). Which of the following baddies were NOT listed members of this prestigious organization in the instruction manual?

Answer: Tweeter

Shyguys, Beezos, and Snifits are the only known members of the 8 Bits. All three enemies wear masks. Tweeter, a hopping bird, also wears a mask, but is not a member. The "Super Mario All-Stars" sprites for Shyguys and Tweeters have been found in beta versions of "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island", but are not present in the final game.
2. Ah, Goombas. They are the very first enemy you encounter in the original 1985 NES classic "Super Mario Bros." There have been a wide variety of Goombas over the ensuing years. One such Goomba is Bellhop Goomba, who appears exclusively in "Hotel Mario" in the levels of "Wendy's Blitz Snarlton Hotel." What type of Koopa frequently appears along side these Bellhop Goombas?

Answer: Z Koopa

Z Koopas debut in Level 6-6 of "Hotel Mario", and figure most prominently along side Bellhop Goombas in Wendy's Blitz Snarlton Hotel. They are dressed formally, sporting dress coats, ties, and white shirts. They are airborne, and so can move from level to level in a zig-zag pattern. Mario or Luigi can knock them out with fireballs or jumps.
3. Bullet Bills first appeared in "Super Mario Bros." There are a large variety of Bills. What relative of Bullet Bill is actually gold in colour?

Answer: Bombshell Bills

Bombshell Bills debut in "Paper Mario" and also appear in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door". They guard the Palace of Shadow and Bowser's Castle. in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars", when Smithy transforms into a tank he fires a golden Bullet Bill which appears similar to Bombshell Bill.
4. The Hammer Bros. have been around a long time. One species of Hammers Bros., called the Chomp Bros., use a Chain Chomp as their primary weapon. What game do the Chomp Bros. appear in?

Answer: Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga

They appear only in Bowser's Castle in "Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga". Depending on how many times he spins around determines the speed of his attack. After they throw their chomp, they are vulnerable to attack.
5. Not all Mario Baddies appear in Mario games. Sonic the Hedgehog was Mario's main rival in the market place in the early 1990s. However, as time went on Sega pulled out of the hardware market and began publishing Sonic games on Nintendo consoles, something inconceivable in 1992. What is the first Nintendo Sonic game?

Answer: Sonic Advance

In the early 1990s, after the failed mascot Alex Kid, Sega introduced Sonic, a superfast hedgehog with spiky blue hair. Sega positioned Sonic as the true alternative to Mario, and throughout the early 1990s there was intense rivalry between the two companies, with Sega trying to edge out Nintendo's market share. Sega had the famous marketing campaign that the "Sega Genesis does what Nintendon't!" To see Mario and Sonic on the same platform, let alone in the same game, was simply something would not not happen in a million years, or so many in the gaming community thought. However, by the early 2000s, Sega's Dreamcast console had failed, and Sega got out of the hardware and began publishing their titles elsewhere. The first game was "Sonic Advance" for the Gameboy Advanced, appearing in December 2001. The next title was a port of the Dreamcast title "Sonic Adventure 2", retitled as "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle", released on the Gamecube in February 2002. Sega also published "Sonic Mega Collection" for the Gamecube in late 2002, which was a collection of early Sonic titles.

Back in the early 1990s my friend had the Sega Genesis, and we always played Sonic 2. I remember a lot of people loved Sonic simply because he was so fast and so much different from Mario.

Mario and Sonic inherited their parent company's prejudice feelings about one another. However, in a remarkable feat of diplomacy, much like President Bush and President Clinton working together on their various charitable organizations, Mario and Sonic appeared in their first game together for the Nintendo Wii, "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games". The game industry has truly remade itself from the early 1990s.
6. In the "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" strategy guide, we learn about Electro-Chomps, small electrically charged metal balls that revolve in orbital patterns around various objects on the screen. They were first introduced in "Super Mario 64". If Mario hits one, he is shocked and looses some health. What is their original name in "Super Mario 64"?

Answer: Amps

After their debut in "Super Mario 64", the Amps appear in several of the "Mario Party" games, where they are sometimes referred to as Zaps. They also appear in "New Super Mario Bros." and "Super Mario Galaxy". Two Amps in the "Super Mario 64" level "Shifting Sand Land" will chase Mario if he gets too close to them.
7. Mario baddies are fierce, obstinate, and mean. You need a lot of skill to get past them. In one of the games, found in only one level, there is an item that has the appearance of an atom that, if you collect it, all enemies on the screen will be killed. Like the Yaschici in the original "Mega Man", it only appears once in said game. What's the game?

Answer: Super Mario Bros. Special

The power up is called a "Lucky Star", and appears in the first official sequel ever published to "Super Mario Bros.", "Super Mario Bros. Special". This title predates "Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels" by a few months. Hudson Soft developed the title for the PC88 Series of Japanese PCs.

The title is officially licensed by Nintendo. Other items unique to this game are the Hachisuke, which awards Mario 8,000 points, the Hammer, the power up from Donkey Kong, the Clock, which gives Mario an additional 100 seconds, and the Wing, which causes Mario to act like he is "swimming" on land.
8. Bill Blasters are the cannons that shoot Bullet Bills. How many levels do Bill Blasters appear in the original NES "Super Mario Bros"?

Answer: 5

Bill Blasters debut in 5-1, then appear in 5-2, 7-2, 8-2, and 8-3. They have appeared in various titles and forms since that debut. In some of the games Bill Blasters do not have the skull. In "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", Nintendo brings back the distinctive look for Bill Blasters first introduced in "Super Mario Bros."
9. Bowser, Mario's primary nemesis, makes a cameo appearance in what "Legend of Zelda" title? Yoshi also has a cameo in the same title.

Answer: Bowser does not appear in any of the three games listed

Bowser, along with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach Toadstool, and Yoshi appear as paintings hanging in Hyrule Castle in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Mario also appears as paintings in various houses in the SNES title "A Link to the Past".
10. In one of the Gameboy "Zelda" games, "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" one of Mario's primary adversaries helps Link by teaching him a new song on the ocarina. What name does this adversary go by in "Link's Awakening"?

Answer: Mamu

Wart, the final boss from "Super Mario Bros 2", appears to Link to help him on his journey to wake the Wind Fish. Link knows him as Mamu, Wart's Japanese name. Like Zora in "A Link to the Past", Mamu doesn't give his secrets away for free; you must pay him 300 rupees to learn his music, a jam song entitled "Frog's Song of the Soul". Both "Super Mario Bros 2" and "Link's Awakening" take place in a dream world, so it is quite likely that the land of Subcon and Koholint Island, where "Link's Awakening" takes place, is somehow connected.
