Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The AGD Interactive version of the game features VGA Graphics, 256 colors, voice acting, changes to the story and point-and-click interface.

Answer: True

AGD Interactive made some major adjustments to the graphics of the game, making the game more relevant in the 21st century. The game also added and changed some puzzles, and added some new elements to the story, including new characters.
2. If Mannanan forces Alexander to work out in the remake, what song plays?

Answer: "YMCA" - The Village People

If Alexander angers Manannan so that he punishes him, sometimes he will make him exercise. In the remake he does this to the tune of "YMCA". It is unclear if this song is actually playing in Manannan's house or if it's just background music for the game (the 4th wall).
3. Unlike the original version, the remake warns you when Manannan is soon to come back. How does it do this?

Answer: The clock changes color

In the original version of the game. Manannan was always gone for 25 minutes. However, there are no hints for this. You have to learn this the hard way. You have to see Manannan returning and probably killing you before you learn that this is timed, and then you have to go through this several times and learn to watch the clock when he leaves and when he returns to learn his schedule. Or else you had to consult a walkthrough, which didn't exist back then.

In the remake, the clock changes color. Most of the time the clock's color is insignificant. However, when Manannan leaves or sleeps, the clock turns green. The green indicates that Alexander has plenty of time to do stuff. Then the clock turns yellow and has an exclamation mark, indicating that Manannan will be back relatively soon. Then the clock turns red with 3 exclamation marks indicating that Manannan will be back in less than two minutes. There are two drawbacks to the remake compared to the original. First of all, the amount of time Alexander has never remains constant. One time he may have just 10 minutes and the next time he may have 15 minutes. The second drawback is that he never has as much as 25 minutes. Still, the clock changing color gives you fair warning that the original version does not give you.
4. In the remake, there are some abandoned buildings one screen north of the tavern and shop. Alexander has to enter one of these buildings. What is it?

Answer: Library

Alexander must enter the abandoned library and find the diary of the last Gwydion before him. This will give Alexander the secret code to enter Manannan's basement where Alexander acquires the spells. In the original game there was no secret code. There was just a fake book that opened the trap door.
5. What character from "King's Quest 4" appears in the remake of "King's Quest 3"?

Answer: Minstrel

One screen above the bandit hideout, there is a guy trying to be a poet. Alexander decides that the poems would be better if they were accompanied with music. He then finds a lute in the bar that belonged to the last Gwydion. The barmaid tells him that he must play for her before she lets him have the lute. So he learns a spell on enhancing musical talent (that didn't exist in the original game), and plays a song at the bar.

The barmaid then lets him have the lute. He then gives it to the poet, who excitedly accepts it and decides to become a minstrel.

He horribly sings a few lines and then wanders off. At the end of the game (if you win), this guy can be seen walking to the stump in Tamir, confirming that this is the minstrel Rosella meets in "King's Quest 4". Ironically, in that game, Rosella undoes what her brother did. Alexander turned him from a poet into a minstrel.

Then Rosella turned him from a minstrel to a poet. I wonder what Alexander and Rosella would think if they both knew that the other met this guy and how the other dealt with him.
6. In the remake, the tavern has a beer that's label "D.B." Drinking it reveals that it's brewed from Spielberg. What is this?

Answer: Dragon's Breath

Yup, this is the deadly beer from "Quest For Glory". Somehow there's enough of a market for deadly drinks that the Spielberg bartender was able to export it.
7. In the desert there is a deadly woman who will kill Alexander if he looks at her in the original version of this game. Alexander can redeem this woman in the remake. Who is this?

Answer: Medusa

Medusa is a mythological hideous woman. Anyone who looks at her is frightened by her ugliness and turns to stone. In the original version of this game, if Alexander is facing to the left when she appears on-screen, he is doomed. He has to face a different way and act quickly if he wants to defeat her. The desert has some of the spell ingredients Alexander needs, so he must defeat Medusa if he hoped to win this game.

In the remake , Medusa is not a random monster. She can be found in a cave in the desert. When Alexander enter the cave, she is hiding behind a cloak as she doesn't yet trust Alexander. This is a classic "King's Quest" puzzle with more than one solution and the less deadly solution offers more points. Alexander can walk up confidently to Medusa and kill her in the usual way, or he can try to redeem her. If he attempts the latter, she will ask him 5 question to which re must respond kindly. If he succeeds, Medusa will be disenchanted and she will let Alexander take the stone as his reward. Only if he fails or dallies too long in the cave does he turn to stone.
8. In the remake, the spell instructions are found in the book in the basement. Where are they found in the original version?

Answer: In the manual that came with the game

The spells were Sierra's form of copy protection for this game. You had to follow the instructions perfectly, including spelling. One typo and you're dead. In the remake, you don't have to type the instructions and Alexander does the incantation automatically.
9. In the remake, where do the pirates take Alexander before they go to Daventry?

Answer: An Island

In the original version, the treasure is hidden on a beach in Daventry, so the pirates sail directly there. In the remake, the treasure is hidden on an island that used to be linked to Daventry, so the pirates sail there. Alexander solves a series of puzzles that were not in the original game, and in the treasure box he finds he orb that heals the land of the damage done by the dragon and the item that the Father wants.

He takes those two items to Daventry with him and leaves the rest of the treasure with the pirates.
10. If Alexander incorrectly solves the puzzle at Seran's gate, where does he go?

Answer: Down the waterfall in the Forbidden City in "Quest For Glory 2"

If Alexander does not place all of the tiles at Seran's gate, or if he uses the wrong ones, or if he puts them in the wrong order, he goes down the waterfall in "Quest For Glory 2." Each of the tiles have a name and picture of an animal on them. You have to look at the first letter of each animal's name and use five of them to spell out the name "Seran."

This Easter egg can also be seen in the "Quest For Glory 2" remake. Sometimes instead of a log, the hero will see Alexander falling down the waterfall.
11. In order to escape the ship once it near Daventry, what spell must Alexander cast first?

Answer: Sleep

Alexander must first drop the sleep powder in the bottom floor below the grate. The effect will rise up through the grate and then all the pirates will fall asleep, making them no longer a threat to Alexander.

Alexander cannot cast the Eagle spell before the sleep spell because there's not enough room for an Eagle to fly around in the ship and if he gets to the top or the side of the ship, the pirates will throw him back in the hold before he can cast the spell. If he repeats this attempt they will make him walk the plank.

If Alexander casts the teleport spell, he may end up in the ocean, or at the top or side of the ship where all the pirates are. He doesn't want to be there.

If Alexander casts the storm spell, he'll sink the ship and the pirates will all drown. The problem is, Alexander is still on the ship and he'll also drown.
12. What's in the treasure chest in the original game?

Answer: Nothing important. It just gives you points

Like many valuable items in the first few "King's Quest" games, the chest serves no purpose other than points. However, if Alexander gets it, the pirates won't get it, so that may give him a sense of satisfaction.
13. In the remake, Alexander sees an owl wearing clothes. Who is this?

Answer: Cedric

Anyone who has played "King's Quest 5" knows that this is Cedric. Unfortunately, Alexander is absolutely sure that owls can't talk so he can't speak to it. According to AGD Interactive, the purpose of this is to establish the fact that Cedric is a character who sometimes perches around Daventry observing events, just like he will observe Mordack stealing the castle.

It has never been made clear why Cedric was in Daventry at the time. AGD Interactive wanted to establish the fact that it was not a fluke that he saw Mordack stealing the castle, that he went to Daventry often and just kept to himself until Mordack. According to AGD Interactive, the reason Cedric doesn't speak in this game is that it would spoil the surprise of a talking owl for those who had not yet played "King's Quest 5".

This explanation is contradicted by Cedric's appearance as an Easter Egg in the cloud tests in the remake of the second game, in which he does talk.
14. Along the pathway, Alexander meets a yeti. In the remake, it is revealed this this is the same yeti that appears in what game?

Answer: King's Quest 5

AGD Interactive made this yeti look exactly like the one in "King's Quest 5". This is revealed to not be a coincidence as once Alexander evades him, he says that he is going back to Serenia.
15. How does Alexander get to cloudland?

Answer: By taking a stairway behind the broken mountain door

In "King's Quest 3," there is a staircase behind the mountain door that wasn't there in "King Quest 1." In the remake, it is revealed that the path that Graham used to take is falling apart and has too many holes to be safely crossed. The beanstalk is unseen, but one can assume a giant plant has likely been burned down by the dragon.

In theory, Cedric could have given Alexander the ability to fly like he did to Graham in the "King's Quest 5" intro. Unfortunately, Alexander did not know that he could talk to him.
