King's Quest 5: Absence Trivia Quiz

This computer game is Sierra's first ever VGA game with point-and-click interface and voice acting. It also has no copy protection which is nice. Because it was the first VGA game, there are some growing pains. But it is one of my all-time favorites.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What good wizard gives Graham his wand?

Answer: Crispin

Crispin is a retired wizard. He has gotten very old, and so have his magical items. Therefore, the wand that he gives Graham is not useful right away. Graham will have to find a way to get some power in the wand.
2. What owl accompanies Graham on his journey?

Answer: Cedric

Ah, yes. Those of us who played the "King's Quest" games as a child remember Cedric all too well. Most of us wish we didn't. He is annoying, rarely helpful, and too timid to follow Graham into any place that might be even remotely dangerous. In addition, his warnings are either really obvious and/or they are too late. The game should allow Graham to stop what he's doing after Cedric warns him, but it doesn't. Roberta didn't perfect this sort of thing until "King's Quest 7." To be fair, most of his late warnings are things you shouldn't need to be warned about, but there are a couple things a new player would have no clue of that Cedric should be able to warn you about (but he only does when it's too late).

However, without Cedric, Graham would have had no way of learning what happened to his castle or family. Even if he did, he would have no way of doing anything about it without Cedric's fairy dust to help him fly to Serenia. Lastly, Cedric provides vital help later on in the game. So even the biggest haters of Cedric should give him some credit for that.
3. What is to the south of the good wizard's house?

Answer: A POISONOUS snake!

Who could have ever figured that out without Cedric to point it out? This has become one of the most popular memes if not THE most popular meme ever among adventure game fanatics.
4. Although Cedric tells Graham to go to the town, he doesn't follow him there. Why not?

Answer: He had a nasty run-in with a dog once

Why Cedric, who can fly, would have a nasty run-in with a dog is beyond me. Some owls aren't very wise.
5. How many dead fish does Graham find in this game?

Answer: Two

This is not "Space Quest 6," so he isn't carrying around a dead fish for almost the whole game. But "King's Quest 5" has more dead fish than "Space Quest 6." "King's Quest 5" just does less to draw attention to it. There's the one at the beginning you feed to the bear and there's the one at the end that you feed to Manannan the cat if you see him.
6. What's the password to the temple?

Answer: Open Sesame

Graham hides behind some rocks after seeing some bandits go into the temple and he learns the secret password. Graham apparently does not know the story of Ali Baba, so he has to overhear the password to learn it.
7. Why did Mordack take Graham's castle and family?

Answer: Alexander turned his brother into a cat

Manannan is Mordack's brother. Mordack kidnapped the castle and family both as revenge for what Alexander did, and to force Alexander to turn him back into a wizard. Once one has been turned into a cat, the only one who can turn him back into a wizard is the one that turned him into a cat. Unfortunately, Alexander does not know how to turn Manannan back into a wizard and would have no desire to do so even if he did know how. This pisses off Graham, as at the end of the game, Graham introduces his son as "Alexander, who started this whole mess." Graham was completely clueless to the predicament Alexander was in at the time (What choice did he have?).

There is no evidence that Lolotte, Hagatha, or the witch from "King's Quest 1" are related to Mordack. However, they could all be part of the black cloak society.
8. How does Graham defeat the witch in this game?

Answer: He shows her a bottle with a genie in it

Graham finds a bottle with an evil genie. If the bottle is opened, the genie will force its opener to enter the bottle in its place. Graham shows the bottle to the witch, so she can open the bottle and meet her fate.

The magical amulet is necessary to defeat the witch, but it does not kill her. It just stops Graham from being affected by her magic.

The Hansel and Gretel trick from "King's Quest 1" does not work in future games.

The magic mirror would have been useful in this game, but that's in "Quest For Glory."
9. How does Graham get out of the forest?

Answer: An elf helps him

There's not a lot of story logic in this part of the game. A lot of the puzzles rely on game logic with no story logic It could explain why one of the bigger complaints from fans about this game besides the voice acting is the illogical puzzles. For example, what happens to the pathway that Graham took to get into the forest after he meets the witch? The game logic is that Graham needs to get a pair of shoes from the elves in the forest before he leaves, but storywise it doesn't make much sense that he can't leave the way he came.

It's possible that once the witch failed to turn Graham into a toad, she cast a spell on the forest to keep him from escaping, but then you should have seen that. How exactly is one supposed to know that the eyes in that part of the forest are significant, and not just background artwork to add to the creepiness of the forest? How does one know that those eyes are friendly elves and not wolves or bears? How does one know that elves like emeralds? If you don't have the honeycomb, how are you supposed to know that's what you're missing? Why can't Graham get away from the spider before it gets him? The game logic for that last question is that the spider is a merciful "Game Over" to keep Graham from wandering the forest forever without the honeycomb, but logically Graham should be able to easily avoid that spider will before it gets him.

It doesn't look like the spider should be big enough to get him anyway.
10. What is one screen to the east of the gypsies?

Answer: Weeping willow

One screen to the east of the gypsies is a punny character: a weeping willow tree that actually does weep. She plays very good harp music, and if you talk to Cedric on this screen, you will learn that she has a fine singing voice. She weeps because she is actually an enchanted princess.

The witch was aroused by her fiancée. When he chose his princess over the witch, the witch turned the princess into a tree so that the princess would not longer be a threat to the witch's attraction to the man. The tree also says that the witch banished her fiancé to a faraway land. Actually, he can be found in Serenia, just one screen east and one screen south of her. Even if the witch did banish him, he apparently didn't stop him from coming back. If Graham brings back her golden heart, she will become human and then leave her harp behind, which Graham takes.
11. What is one screen east of the anthill?

Answer: Gnomes

An old gnome is with his grandson, who is playing with a puppet. When Graham brings back his spinning wheel, the gnome says that the spinning wheel can spin straw into gold. This could baffle some people, as this gnome and Graham do not recognize each other even though Rumplestiltskin lived in Daventry. Most likely, the Rumplestiltskin in Serenia is the one from the forward realm not the backward realm.
12. When Graham helps the ants, how do they return the favor?

Answer: They find a golden needle in a haystack

A big rule of the "King's Quest" games: always help out everyone that you can. In "King's Quest 5," "everyone" is primarily most of the animals that you meet in the game. In the voice version of the game, you can hear the ants singing while they're searching for the needle.
13. What item is used only once in this game?

Answer: Boot

The boot has two different POSSIBLE uses in this game interchangeable with the stick. However, whichever use you choose, you will only use it once during that game. The other items are used twice.
14. How do you get past the rocks?

Answer: Click the hand icon on them and keep to the ones in the back

Graham walks on the rocks only if you click the hand icon on them. If you click the walk icon on them, he will walk off the cliff and fall to his death. Also, the ones in the front have a 50% chance of breaking. The ones in the back are completely safe.
15. What death has the message "Thank you for playing 'King's Quest 5?'"

Answer: Attaching the rope to the branch

There is at least one other death in the game with this message, and that's if you fail to patch the hole in the boat before sailing. Most of the deaths in this game have interesting death messages. Aside from the "King's Quest 1" remake, this is the first "King's Quest" game with custom death messages.
