Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What should Graham eat when he gets hungry?

Answer: 1/2 of the leg of lamb

Any of the other options will make the game unwinnable. You cannot even have the honeycomb and make it this far in the game unless there is some cheat code that I am not aware of.
2. What's the first bad thing that happens to Cedric?

Answer: He gets captured by a wolf

For some reason Cedric flies low enough to allow a wolf to catch him. Graham will soon be in the same predicament that Cedric is in.
3. What should Graham feed the hungry eagle?

Answer: 1/2 of the leg of lamb

Who knew that eagles like lamb? Then again this eagle was so hungry he was not going to be picky. This eagle also likes pie, which is unusual for eagles, but feeding him the pie makes the game unwinnable.
4. What is the name of the woman who rules the cold mountains?

Answer: Queen Icebella

The ice queen has a name that is a pun. This queen views Graham and Cedric as evil outsiders who invaded her kingdom and orders the wolves to kill them. Graham must find a way to melt her heart and get the queen to like and respect him.
5. How does Graham defeat the yeti?

Answer: He throws a pie in its face

This is one of the more fun things to do in the game once you've solved the puzzle. Just throw the pie in its face before it gets too close to you, and it will be blinded. Not seeing where it is going, it will fall off the cliff to its death.
6. What kind of bird captures Graham and tries to feed him to its baby?

Answer: Roc

The two-headed bird that captures Graham and drops him in its nest as food for its baby, who is about to hatch, is called a roc. When the bird hatches, Graham makes a pathetic attempt to convince the bird not to eat him. This attempt fails, and the only thing that can save Graham is the eagle he met earlier in the game, if he helped him. If Graham doesn't help the eagle, then the minute he meets the wolves who escort him to Queen Icebella's throne room, the game is unwinnable. There is also a little glint in the nest. Graham better pick that up quickly or the game is unwinnable.

For the "Space Quest" fanatics this makes you wonder. In "Space Quest 4," if Roger stays in the bird's nest long enough, he can see Graham in the distance being carried off by a bird (this is an Easter Egg in that game). Is that the roc? Is that the eagle? Or is that the condor from "King's Quest 1?" Maybe it doesn't matter and that's intentionally left to the interpretation of the player. It's amazing the number of times Graham has been carried away by a bird.
7. On the beach, Graham finds a boat. The minute you enter the boat screen, Cedric points out the obvious "Look Graham there's a boat here. Maybe we can use it!" What Cedric mysteriously doesn't point out is a significantly less obvious problem with the boat, something that the player can't see but will kill Graham if he doesn't deal with it. What is wrong with the boat?

Answer: It has a hole in it

Cedric. Useless as usual. He can fly right over the boat and warn Graham of the hole, but would he do that for Graham? No. All he does is point out the obvious. Okay, he will eventually point out the hole, but only after Graham has already sailed out into sea, and then it's too late. Technically there is a way to discover the hole without dying. If you click they eye icon at just the right spot on the boat, the narrator will tell you that there is a hole. But that's hard to do and a novice player wouldn't know that. The game should tell you that no matter where you click on the boat and Cedric should tell you the minute you enter the screen. Graham needs to patch the hole with the beeswax.

The boat might belong to the old man on the beach, but if it does he's not going to object to you taking it. In fact you have to take it to help him.
8. Can Graham leave Cedric at Harpee Island?

Answer: Yes, but the game is unwinnable

Trick question. Technically yes, if you are fed up enough with Cedric you can leave him on the island. The rest of Graham's life may actually be more pleasant for a little while if he does this. The cut scene with the old man will be shorter, Graham won't have to hear Cedric say "Watch out for the rocks Graham!" and Graham does not have to deal with Cedric's whining on Mordack's island. However, Cedric will not be around to save Graham's life at the end of the game and he and his family are doomed.

The answer "No, Graham needs Cedric's help at the end of the game" is true, but on this quiz it's a wrong answer because the question did not say "Can Graham leave Cedric at Harpee Island and still win the game?"
9. What does the mermaid scare off?

Answer: Sea serpent

You cannot get to Mordack's island without the mermaid's help because the sea serpent will kill you if you try it. However, somehow the mermaid seems to be able to scare it off. Maybe the sea serpent is attracted to it and doesn't want to offend it?

Speaking of the sea serpent, that's another thing Cedric doesn't warn you about until it's too late.
10. How does Graham get past Mordack's serpent guards?

Answer: Crystal

One thing all of these objects is that if you don't have them before you need them, the game is unwinnable. This is tough because if you get to where you need them and you don't have them, you may attempt to solve the puzzle hundreds of times without ever realizing that what you need to solve the puzzle is something you didn't get earlier in the game. Most Sierra adventure games have at least one way to make the game unwinnable but "King's Quest 5" has more of these than most games. The only game I know of that might have more of these unwinnable scenarios is "Leisure Suit Larry 2."

Anyway, if these guards kill you: the death message reads "The Eyes Have it."
11. How does Graham open the grate?

Answer: Crowbar

If Graham does not have the crowbar at this point, he will be stuck. Wait around long enough before you restore and the blue creature will eventually take him to his cell, where he will not be able to escape. Fortunately, this problem isn't likely to happen.

The crowbar is right there, front and center and well-pixelated, on the screen where you first entered the beach. It is easy to spot.
12. What friendly monster does Graham find in Mordack's confusing maze?

Answer: Dink

Dink is supposed to be a friendly monster. However, if Graham gets too close to him, he will hug too hard and accidentally kill Graham. Graham must play the tambourine. Then Dink will take the tambourine from him and have fun with it and then walk off and drop his hairpin.
13. In Mordack's kitchen, Graham meets a cute young woman. Who is this?

Answer: Cassima

It seems there must have been a meeting of the black cloak society in Mordack's dining room. Mordack was looking for a girl to enslave and Abdul Alhazred had a girl he wanted to get rid of, so they agreed that Abdul send Cassima to Mordack, where she acts as a slave to her.

Initially, she doesn't trust Graham. Having spent too much of her life around men like Abdul Alhazred and Mordack, she's developed a strong distrust for men and believes Graham to be another one of those men. Graham can earn her trust if he returns her locket, which somehow got stuck in a roc's nest. Cassima says she lost it on an island, but it's unclear how it ended up in a roc's nest. Importantly, if the player didn't see the glint in the roc's nest in time, it's unclear how the player is supposed to figure out that the item he needed for Cassima was in the roc's nest.

At any rate, you help her and she helps you.
14. What happens if you play the organ?

Answer: Mordack is alerted and Graham dies

The organ has a creepy look to it that suggest it may not be a good idea to play it. The narrator warns you that the organ is suspicious if you click the eye there. Also, Cassima told Graham that he should keep quiet while he is in Mordack's castle. So, loud music is not a good idea. However, if you have never done this, for some fun I recommend playing the organ right after saving the game. I never get tired of the song that plays. When I played this game as a child, I purposefully got Graham killed this way many times just to hear the music.

This organ is not at all like the organ in "King's Quest 4." There's no secret key in it. Even if there was, Graham doesn't need one.

The cat MIGHT be scared away if he hears the organ, assuming he appears on this screen at all. But then after being scared away, he'd only alert Mordack who'd promptly kill Graham.
15. As counter-intuitive as this seems to the new player of "King's Quest 5," Graham should let the blue creature capture him once. When should this happen?

Answer: After he gives the locket to Cassima

After Graham has given the locket to Cassima, Cassima will return the favor with a good deed later on. That good deed will be bailing him out of the cell.

As mentioned earlier in the quiz, Graham can be caught by the blue monster before he enters the labyrinth if he dallies outside the castle for too long, but this makes the game unwinnable.

If Graham has not yet given the locket to Cassima, Cassima will have no reason to trust him, let alone help him. So he will be stuck.

"After he's been in the cell once" would be after the blue creature has already captured him before, which would make this the 2nd time he's been captured. That answer could make sense because Cassima has shown you the secret exit. Unfortunately, if you return to the cell, the secret exit will be cemented
and will no longer be an exit. So you're doomed.
16. Besides walking away, what can you do if you see the blue guy again?

Answer: Trip him with the peas

This is one of two completely optional tasks in this game, excluding the interchanging of some items at the beginning (giving the needle to the gypsy and the coin to the tailor, using the boot with the dog and the stick with the cat). If you're just going for the win you may not see him a second time, but if you want full points you need to wait around for him to return.
17. If Graham sees a black cat, what should he do?

Answer: Put the cat in a bag

If Graham has not yet tripped up the blue creature with the beans, the correct answer is "Restore." This cat is Manannan, Mordack's brother whom Alexander turned into a cat in "King's Quest 3." If he spots Graham, he will alert Mordack, who will show up shortly thereafter and kill Graham. Graham must do something to prevent him from doing that. That something is throw a dead fish at him and bag him.

These optional tasks could be a play on two idioms that involve keeping or revealing the secret: spilling the beans and putting the cat back in the bag. Graham spilled the beans to trip up the blue creature. If Mordack finds that the blue creature has been tripped up, he may want to know why. Manannan, who is usually close to the blue creature (they show up on the same screens), may have an idea. To prevent the secret of Graham's presence being revealed to Mordack, he must put the cat back in the bag.
18. Where must Graham hide from Mordack and wait for him to go to sleep?

Answer: Library

Graham must go into the library, learn some spells, and hide and wait for Mordack to sleep. Fortunately, Mordack won't notice if Graham bagged Manannan in his room. Graham better be careful though. There is an eye in the middle of the library that can be open or closed depending on where Graham is standing. If the eye is open when Mordack arrives, he will spot Graham in the library and kill him there.
19. What makes the machine in the lab work?

Answer: Cheese

If you have the cheese, this puzzle shouldn't be too hard to solve because it's near the end of the game and that's the one item you haven't used yet. The problem is, if you don't have the cheese or a hint book, you'll never know what you're missing and that you have to be captured to get it.

There's no hint in the game that you need to be captured, and not many new players of the game are going to naturally think that getting captured is a good idea. As much as I love this game, this part is questionable game design.
20. How does Mordack meet his end?

Answer: Graham outsmarts him with 4 perfect spells

Mordack turns himself into 4 different deadly things and Graham uses the spells he learned in the library to counteract those four things. The last thing Mordack does is turn himself into a fire and Graham douses him with rainwater. With Mordack dead, Crispin can now enter the castle and save everybody and get everyone home: Graham, his family, Cassima, and Cedric.

Cassima does not stab the villain with a dagger in this game. That happens in "King's Quest 6."
