Answer: The Legend of Zelda

"The Legend of Zelda" started back in 1989 on the NES console and has since become one of Nintendo's leading franchises. Starring Link, an adventurer who (usually) sets out to save the land of Hyrule from evil forces, the series actually takes place over several timelines and follows a basic format in which the player moves from dungeon to dungeon fighting bosses and collecting important items. "The Legend of Zelda" has appeared on nearly every console and handheld in the Nintendo line-up and, like "Mario", is considered required playing for any retro gamer.

Answer: Legend of the Seven Stars

"Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars" was released in 1996, a short time before the Nintendo 64, and paved the way for the 3D-rendered "Mario" games of the next generations. One of the earliest RPGs in the canon, "The Legend of the Seven Stars" was a turn-based game and was considered by many to be one of the leaders in the genre on the SNES. Square would find further fame pairing up with Enix to make "Final Fantasy" and "Kingdom Hearts" titles and Mario wouldn't be in another RPG until "Paper Mario" on the N64.

In "Super Mario RPG", Mario, Princess Toadstool, Bowser, and others must restore the Star Road by collecting-- get this-- seven stars.

Answer: League of Legends

"League of Legends" was long-anticipated to be a refined version of "Dota" which, to be fair, was a mod of "Warcraft III" popularized without any real promotion. Despite being a very loyal fanbase, many players migrated over, enjoying the updates and tweaks made to create a stronger game.

It was the leading free-to-play MOBA on the internet, at least until Valve took charge to release "Dota 2" on Steam in 2013 and, despite making a more technical, difficult title, took a large chunk of players simply by offering an alternative.

Answer: Rayman Legends

"Rayman Legends" was originally slated to be a Wii U exclusive. Planned to be launched in 2013, the game ended up getting developed for all consoles at the time-- Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, etc.-- because of lackluster sales on Ubisoft's Wii U launch title, "ZombiU".

As a result, the game became Rayman's first foray into gaming's eighth generation, being one of the first major franchises to appear on all three consoles; the Wii U, the Xbox One, and the PS4. The game follows up on the style and gameplay of "Rayman Origins", emphasizing quick, fluid platforming and local cooperative play.

Answer: Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

"Guitar Hero", already a bit hit by this time in the music gaming boom, hit it big with the third installment, "Legends of Rock", which strove to tweak and enhance the formula already created in the series created by Harmonix (who had departed from development by this point to create "Rock Band"). Notably, it was also the first game in the series to be made for a Nintendo console. "Guitar Hero", based on playing a plastic guitar controller by strumming and pressing five coloured fret buttons on the neck of the instrument, became a cultural gaming icon.

This was also the last game in the series to be made without drums; they came out with "World Tour" in 2008 to match up to "Rock Band", also released in 2007.

Answer: Legendary

Although this could have been a unique shooter with horror elements and the like, Spark Unlimited's "Legendary" was panned by most critics, earning one of the more abysmal overall scores of 2008 for its unrefined gameplay and convoluted story. In the game you played as a thief planning to steal a box from a high-profile museum only to discover it was (gasp) Pandora's Box.

It also gave you magic powers. It also created evil monsters. The title was never meant to be ironic.

Answer: 007 Legends

Eurocom, who previously made the Wii remake of "Goldeneye", folded and shut its doors shortly after the release of "007 Legends", a game created in 2012 to commemorate the first fifty years of James bond films, mainly by revisiting classic scenes from the twenty-someodd films in the series.

The reviews for the game were miserable and, combined with low sales, probably made a big contribution to the fall of Eurocom, a company which also made "Duke Nukem 64" and the Wii rail-shooter "Dead Space Extraction" during its two dozen years of business.

Answer: Brutal Legend

"Brutal Legend", created by "Psychonauts" developers Double Fine Productions and EA Games, ended up combining the rock aesthetic of Jack Black's Tenacious D with the odd combination of real-time battles and combat action. You play as Eddie Riggs, a rock musician with a V-neck guitar (voiced by Black). Sure enough, many rock figures from Ozzy Osbourne to Rob Halford had roles as well, and the game featured an extensive hard rock soundtrack.

It was well-received, but EA opted not to make a sequel, nearly wiping out Double Fine in the process.

Answer: The Legend of Spyro

A trilogy made to regenerate interest in the waning "Spyro the Dragon" series originally released on the PlayStation, "The Legend of Spyro" was a trio of games that ended up appearing on multiple consoles-- not just Sony's-- to widen the appeal. The story ended up taking a darker tone with this trilogy and it attracted new players, but all of this was set aside upon the release of the PlayStation 3 when it was picked up by Activision and Square Enix and rebranded once more under the "Skylanders" franchise.

In this iteration, Spyro was one of many add-on figurines in an interactive game involving video elements and plastic toys. It was a massive success, selling millions of figurines and copies.

Answer: X-Men Legends

"X-Men Legends" first showed up in 2004 on all major systems (then Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox) and brought a rogue's gallery (ha, pun) of X-men characters from the comics (and films) out to play. You could have a team of four, choosing one and switching between the others or playing cooperatively to build up your powers and head through levels.

The game was popular enough to warrant a sequel, "X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse", and the gameplay mechanics were carried over into the next-gen "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" series using Marvel characters not exclusive to the X-Men franchise.
