Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's open the quiz with some history. Nintendo used the same game engine on both "Ocarina of Time" and another highly acclaimed Nintendo 64 title. What Nintendo game engine did "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" use?

Answer: Super Mario 64

Just like the original NES games, "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda", both Nintendo 64 incarnations of Mario and Link began development at the same time by the same team. Both games use the same engine, although for "Ocarina of Time" the engine was heavily modified.

Here is a quote about Miyamoto from November 19th 1998, "Nintendo Power":

"We were using the "Super Mario 64" engine for "Zelda", but we had to make so many modifications to it that it's a different engine now. What we have now is a very good engine, and I think we can use it for future games if we can come up with a very good concept. It took three or so years to make "Zelda", and about half the time was spent on making the engine. We definitely want to make use of this engine again. "

The next question in that same interview was about "Super Mario 64 2" and if that would ever be made. This was his answer.

"Well, for over a year now at my desk, a prototype program of Luigi and Mario has been running on my monitor. We've been thinking about the game, and it may be something that could work on a completely new game system. "
2. The background music to what Temple or Dungeon was altered as Nintendo felt the original music may offend Muslims?

Answer: The Fire Temple

There are three different cartridge releases of "Ocarina of Time": 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2. 1.1 fixed minor issues in 1.0. 1.2, however, changed the color of Ganon's blood from red to green, and also changed the music of the Fire Temple, as Nintendo felt the music too closely resembled a Muslim holy chant.
3. "Ocarina of Time" is the first time where we see the handmaiden Impa in-game.

Answer: True

Until "Ocarina of Time", Impa proved to be a mysterious character. In both the original "The Legend of Zelda" and "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link", Impa featured heavily in the backstory. However, you never actually see Impa in either game.

All that changed in "Ocarina of Time". Impa is fully present and accounted for.
4. What dungeon did Eiji Aonuma, one of "Zelda's" principal developers, actually apologize for in a 2009 interview with "Game Informer"?

Answer: The Water Temple

The Water Temple is probably the most notorious dungeon in "Ocarina of Time". The dungeon is long and the swimming mechanics can prove to be a hassle. The dungeon is multileveled, with three main levels and a basement which features an encounter with Dark Link. The player also has to frequently go into the inventory to equip/unequip the Iron Boots which are required for the Water Temple.

"I am most sorry that it was not easy for you to put on and take off the heavy boots, that all the time you had to visit the inventory. I am very sorry about that. I should have made it much easier to switch to the heavy boots."
5. Nintendo apparently has a thing for enemies that use large, disconnected hands as their primary form of attack. Bongo Bongo is one such enemy "Ocarina of Time". Which of the following enemies that uses the hands design NOT a Zelda enemy?

Answer: Eyerok

Nintendo has used the basic design of disembodied hands on several games. They used the design on Master Hand from "Super Smash Bros.", Andross, Star Fox's final boss, and Eyerock from "Super Mario 64".

In the "Zelda" series this enemy design appears in the Ramrock fight in "Oracle of Ages", the Gohdan fight from "The Wind Waker", and "Mazaal" from "The Minish Cap".
6. There are two dungeons, the Forest Temple and the Spirit Temple, that feature three mini-boss fights. What enemy is not a mini-boss you fight in either temple?

Answer: Dinolfos

In the Forest Temple you fight Stalfos twice and the last Poe sister Meg for the third fight. In the Spirit Temple Link fights Iron Knuckles three times. Dinolfos appear in Ganon's Castle and the Gerudo Training Ground. They also appear in "Twilight Princess".
7. What item does Link use to enter the Desert Colossus in the second trial of the Haunted Wasteland?

Answer: Lens of Truth

The first trial of The Haunted Wasteland is the River of sound, which Link should use either the Longshot or the Hoverboots. Once there, the second trial begins. Using the Lens of Truth, Link discovers the Phantom Guide, a Poe, that will lead him Link to the Desert Colossus, where the Spirit Temple is hidden in the giant stone carving in the mountainside, the Goddess of the Sand.
8. Which temple listed cannot be entered by both Adult Link and Young Link?

Answer: Forest Temple

There are three temples that can be entered by both Adult Link and Young Link. These are Dodongo's Cavern, he Spirit Temple, and the Shadow Temple. Although Young Link can enter the Shadow Temple, he cannot progress in the Temple as he does not have a Hook Shot.
9. One of the wonders of the Nintendo Wii is the Virtual Console service, which allows players to purchase games for older systems, although the service has not been kind to "Ocarina of Time" in one regard. What item from "Ocarina of Time" has been rendered completely useless when playing "Ocarina of Time" on the Virtual Console?

Answer: Stone of Agony

There are three relics that aids Link in truly knowing his surroundings: the Lens of Truth, the Mask of Truth, and The Stone of Agony. The Stone of Agony will vibrate when a secret is close, and is modeled after the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pack. However, as the Wii does not support the rumble pack functionality, the item serves no use at all.
10. "Ocarina of Time" is the first "Zelda" title that features an in-game blonde Link.

Answer: True

Although official art of previous titles depicted Link as blonde, "Ocarina of Time" is the first game that actually had Link appear as a blonde. In the first two games he had brown hair. In "Link to the Past" he had a reddish-tinged hair color.

Notably enough, this was also the first detailed model of Zelda and also the first game that introduced Ganon's human form.
