Before their near extinction at the hands of the Reapers and after their split from the Galactic Alliance, they began to run rampant in the Terminus systems, becoming one of the most feared race for robbery and other illegal activities which are the norm outside council space. On Omega, at Afterlife, in "Mass Effect 2" there is a Batarian who will serve Shepard a poisoned drink due to being a human.

The two doctors you recruit in the series are Dr. Mordin Solus of the Salarian Special Task Group, and Dr. Liara T'Soni of the Asari. Mordin is a Salarian scientist that in his days with the Special Task Group, was one of the leading researchers for the Genophage, a virus released onto the Krogan to control birth rate.

In "Mass Effect 3" Mordin meets an end, but on his own terms, assuming he did not die during the suicide mission in "Mass Effect 2". Solus dies curing the Genophage or at least attempting, if you chose to kill him and sabotage the cure. Liara is an Asari who aids you in "Mass Effect" to open your mind and see the vision that the Prothean beacon showed you.

She is also a possible love interest and is one of the closest squad members to Shepard, romantically or friendly. Liara also gains the title of Shadowbroker in "Mass Effect 2".

In "Mass Effect 2", Thane seeks your help to save his son, Kolyat. You journey to the Citadel where you seek information on the activities of a Drell. You learn he is on a mission to assassinate a politician. You and Thane get on the upper level and follow the politician, hoping that he will lead you to Kolyat. You confront Kolyat while he attempts his kill and intervene. Thane then reasons with his son and convinces him that the life of an assassin is not one to enter into by choice. Thane himself had been bred and raised as one. Also, depending on if your Shepard is renegade or paragon, you can choose to kill Kolyat's target yourself or let him go.

Samara's daughter is an Ardat-Yakshi. An Ardat-Yakshi is an Asari that instead of the gentle, mind-melding process that is infamous among the Asari and the other races, overhelms any mind of any race, and subsequently kills them, much like a black widow spider. Morinth, Samara's daughter, must be lured in by Shepar, and unless your careful, may succeed in killing him.

When the two Asari meet, Shepard is faced with another decision. Save Samara, or save Morinth. If you do indeed save Morinth, she will dress and act like her mother, unless she is alone with Shepard.

There is a conversation that Shepard can have with Morinth while on his ship. She tells Shepard that yearns to meld with someone and believes that he is the only possible choice. She goes on to say that since he has synthetic parts and has been in contact with Prothean technology, that he can handle her mind. If you give in, she kills you. So the lesson here is dont trust an Ardat-Yakshi.

There are 18 squad members in the "Mass Effect" series. 19 including Morinth or Samara, since you can pick either one. Theres Kaidan Alenko and Ashley Williams, both Alliance military and both a possible love interest. Liara T'Soni, the Asari doctor and Prothean expert. Garrus Vakarian, a Turian and ex C-Sec officer. Tali Zorah vas Normandy, a Quarian who you meet on her pilgrimage, and who later becomes an Admiral in the Quarian military. Urdnot Wrex and Urdnot Grunt, both Krogan. Miranda Lawson and Jacob Taylor, both whom you meet while working with Cerberus, and both of whom leave Cerberus and aid you in the third game.

The two characters that are available only by downloading add-ons, Zaeed Massani and Kasumi Goto. Thane Krios, the Drell assassin. Mordin Solus, the Salarian Scientist. Jack, the homemade biotic that you bust out of prison. James Vega, Alliance marine. Javik, the last remaining Prothean, and the two synthetic squadmates, EDI and Legion.

Zaeed is available in the game only by downloading the "Genesis" add-on. You find him at the Citadel and is one of the only squadmates you recruit that doesn't involve a mission when recruiting. You dress formally and accompany one another to a party for Donovan Hock, the billionaire who is in possession of the Gray Box.

Legion and Thane are the only deaths that are not changeable beyond the way they die. Legion is unchangeable altogether. He sacrifices himself to upload the Reaper Code to all Geth. If Maelon's data is destroyed and Eve dies, and if Wrex was killed on Virmire, and if Shepard does not want to cure the Genophage, then Mordin can be saved from death.
