Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grom was Thrall's best friend, and they considered each other brother. Grom was Blademaster, one of the Orc hero units. Which unique ability did Grom have?

Answer: Mirror Image

Mirror Image created multiple images of the caster to confuse enemy forces. The images did not do any damage and took extra damage, so an opponent paying attention could figure out which Blademaster was the real one. It was still confusing, and units that were not being micromanaged would attack the images until they were destroyed. The images only lasted a short time, but they could even be used as free, throwaway scouts.

Shockwave was an ability of the Tauren Chieftain, Thunder Clap was a Mountain King (Human Alliance) ability, and Immolation was a Demon Hunter (Night Elf) ability.
2. Thrall ordered Grom to collect lumber so the Orcs could build a new settlement for their people in Kalimdor. What was the name of the forest that Grom started to cut down?

Answer: Ashenvale

Thrall and Grom were like brothers, but they also clashed. Thrall focused on peaceful solutions and diplomacy, while Grom preferred to fight his perceived enemies, often prolonging conflicts unnecessarily. Thrall was angry when Grom attacked some human settlements without provocation and against his direct orders. Thrall ordered Grom to go to Ashenvale and collect enough lumber to build a new settlement, hoping that Grom would not have a chance to fight and make negotiations difficult. Unfortunately, the exact opposite happened.

Quel'Thalas was the forested kingdom of the High Elves in the Eastern Kingdoms. Arthas, as a Death knight for the Undead, destroyed most of it, and turned the population into unwilling servants of the Lich King, most notably, Sylvanas Windrunner.

Kehjistan was a region in the "Diablo" universe (also created by Blizzard). It was a forest region in which Act III took place in "Diablo II".

Mar Sara was a barren planet in the "Starcraft" universe (also created by Blizzard). The first mission in both "Starcraft" and "Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty" took place here.
3. Thrall landed in Kalimdor, in the barren wastes. His quest took them out of the dry plains and into the mountainous forest region. In which direction did the Orcs travel?

Answer: North

Kalimdor was a long, vertical continent, with the bottom half being dry and desert-like, and the north being forested and mountainous. Both Grom and Thrall traveled north; Grom to get lumber and find a decent place for a new settlement, and Thrall to find an ancient cavern in the mountains.
4. Some parties did not appreciate Grom cutting down large swaths of their forest, and retaliated. Which new faction did Grom encounter?

Answer: Night Elves

The Night Elves were often compatible with nature. Their lumber-gathering methods did not destroy trees, and their buildings were animated trees. They were not impressed when the brutish Orcs swept into their forest and started clear-cutting.

This was the first time that the Night Elves were seen in the "Reign of Chaos" campaign. Grom was bored with his lumber-gathering chore, and became excited when he found a new challenge to test his blade against. Grom's savagery would make the Night Elves desperate to defend their land, and they stepped up their aggression. In response, Grom had his warriors drink from a fountain that gave them all immense strength. This was foolish, though, because Grom just enslaved his Orcs to the Burning Legion once again.

The Draenei were a race from Draenor, a land in a different plane. Draenor was also the Orcs' homeland. Draenei did not appear until "The Frozen Throne" expansion. Their appearances in "Warcraft III" and "World of Warcraft" are very different.
5. Once in Kalimdor, Thrall met the chieftain Cairne Bloodhoof. Cairne could not help Thrall, but did know someone who might. Who was Thrall told to seek out?

Answer: Oracle

Thrall traveled to Stonetalon Peak, where he found an old dungeon. He and Cairne made their way through the dungeon, and, curiously, encountered humans. When Thrall reached the final room, he ran into Jaina Proudmoore, who was leading a force of humans. The two groups were ready to kill each other, but the Oracle appeared and shouted them down. The Oracle was actually the Prophet who had originally told Thrall and Jaina to travel to Kalimdor. He explained that the Burning Legion was on its way over, and that only by combining forces did they stand a change. He also told Thrall that Grom had corrupted his forces and was serving the Burning Legion. Thrall and Jaina worked together to stop Grom,so they could better prepare for the Burning Legion.

Arthas was in the Eastern Kingdoms under the influence of the Lich King. The Lich King also opposed being ruled by the Burning Legion, but was more secretive about it.

Illidan was a Night Elf who had been imprisoned for ten thousand years. He would be later released to help fight the Burning Legion once again.
6. Like most RTS games, "Warcraft III" had different units for different situations, and different counters. Which Orc units could cast nets to bring down flying units?

Answer: Raiders

Raiders were Orcs who rode wolves and wielded large blades. Interestingly, they dealt siege damage, which made them better at destroying buildings than enemy units. They also had the ability to cast nets to bring down flying units, making them vulnerable to ground melee units. The nets could prevent ground units from moving around, too. Having a few Raiders mixed in with a bunch of Grunts was usually a good attack group.

Troll Headhunters and Kodo Beasts were ranged ground units, and could attack flying units naturally. Kodo Beasts also had damage boosting aura for nearby friendly units. Wyvern Riders were ranged flying units of the Horde.
7. In "Warcrat III" the population resource was food. Which Orc structure increased the amount of food you had, letting you build more units?

Answer: Orc Burrow

Each race had a basic structure that increased its food limit. Orcs used Orc Burrows (The actual name of the structure is "Orc Burrow", but they are often referred to as "Burrows"). Units could be garrisoned inside Orc Burrows to protect them from attackers. Units inside could throw spears to defend themselves. This was particularly convenient when opponents sent raiding parties to kill workers and weaken your economy. You could have your Peons garrison themselves to protect themselves and fight off the attackers.

The Barracks was where basic military units were trained, like the Grunts and Troll Headhunters. The Bestiary trained units that rode animals, like the Raiders and Kodo Beasts. The Spirit Lodge was where magic users were trained, like the Shaman and the Witch Doctor.

In Blizzard's other RTS, "Starcraft", each race had its own population resource (supply, control, and psi), and so if a player could get control of a worker from a different race, then two armies could be created. In "Warcraft III", each race used food, so taking control of an enemy worker did not allow you to build up a new base and create a doubly large army.
8. The Orcish Horde was comprised of more than just Orcs. During the trip from the Eastern Kingdoms, Thrall met and allied with the Darkspear Trolls. Which race decided to join Thrall and help his cause once in Kalimdor?

Answer: Tauren

Soon after Thrall arrived on Kalimdor, he encountered the old Tauren Chieftain, Cairne Bloodhoof. Cairne and his Tauren were in the middle of a conflict with the Centaurs. Thrall aided Cairne, seeing a noble race and a compassionate leader. Cairne told Thrall about the Oracle, and joined Thrall to repay the debt of saving his people.

The Tauren were a large and strong race. They were the heaviest melee units in the Horde, and gave their strength to Thrall gladly.

The Furbolgs were bear-like creatures that lived in the forests of Ashenvale. They became enemies of the Horde when Grom attacked them during his mission to gather lumber.

The Blood Elves were the remnants of the High Elves from the Eastern Kingdoms. They would eventually join the Horde in "World of Warcraft".

The Pandaren were originally an April Fool's joke by Blizzard, but the response to them was so positive that they were included in the "Warcraft" universe.
9. What kind of weapon did Thrall wield?

Answer: Hammer

Warchief Thrall wielded a large hammer and rode a wolf into battle. Despite being a physically strong Orc, Thrall was actually an intelligence hero, rather than strength like Cairne, or agility like Grom. He had a ranged attack where he threw bolts of electricity at his opponents, instead of hitting enemies with his hammer directly.

Grom used a large blade, and Cairne used a giant axe as their weapons. Jaina Proudmoore, the human mage, used a staff. She and Thrall became unlikely allies after visiting the Oracle and learning about the Burning Legion.
10. Using the first letter of each of your previous answers, spell out the name of the being responsible for the corruption and enslavement of the Orcs.

Answer: Mannoroth

The Burning Legion was a group of demons and other nasty creatures bent of taking over the universe. To do this, they enslaved and corrupted a number of species to work for them. One race was the Orcs of Draenor, who were used to weaken the defenders of Azeroth in preparation for a full-scale invasion. The Orcs were bound to the Burning Legion by drinking the blood of Mannoroth, a Pit Lord of the Burning Legion. Drinking the blood turned the noble people into a strong and savage race. This is the reason Orcs were associated with demons and dark magic during the first two great wars ("Warcraft" and "Warcraft II"). In "Warcraft III", the Orcs were losing their connection to Mannoroth, and Thrall was trying to unite the Orcs in Azeroth to rebuild a proper Orc society. Many Orcs did not care for this idea; they enjoyed the strength and violence of their recent past.

Mannoroth was with the Burning Legion on their invasion of Azeroth during the Third War. He found out that the Orcs had fled to Kalimdor. He went to Kalimdor himself and defiled a fountain with his blood. Grom found the fountain and was looking for a way to defeat his newfound enemies, the Night Elves. He drank from the fountain and crushed the Night Elves, but bound himself and his followers to Mannoroth's will once again.

Thrall was furious with Grom, and managed to remove Mannoroth's influence with the help of Jaina Proudmoore. Once Grom was himself again, he and Thrall tracked down Mannoroth. Grom, in a final, desperate act to save Thrall and his people, killed Mannoroth. Grom died soon after, but as a free Orc.
