Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Banjo-Kazooie
Answer: Tooty
Banjo's little sister, Tooty, is the captive in this Nintendo 64 title in which an evil witch named Gruntilda kidnaps the cute, young bear in order to drain her of all of her beauty and use it for herself. This, of course, leads Banjo and his bird partner, Kazooie, into her lair to stop her once and for all. Tooty is only freed in the end of the game which climaxes with a battle atop the tallest tower of the lair. Tooty does not return for "Banjo-Tooie"; Gruntilda does.
2. Resident Evil 4
Answer: Ashley Graham
The daughter of the President of the United States, Ashley is the escort quest you need to complete in "Resident Evil 4", finding her in a dangerous Spanish town and returning her to her father after the nightmare involving Las Plagas comes to an end. Ashley ends up being found quite early in the game, stowed away in a church guarded by Los Iluminados leader Osmond Saddler, but she continues to follow Leon until their eventual escape on a jet ski.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Answer: Tetra
This is a bit tricky for non-players since there's no overt indication that Tetra is actually a reincarnation of the fabled Princess Zelda until a fair bit later into the game, after which point she's kidnapped and brought back through time to Old Hyrule.
The then-current incarnation of Link, traveling around endless seas on the back of the King of Red Lions, has to fulfill his destiny by heading into the dungeons of the game, stopping Ganon once again, and saving his Princess.
4. Kid Icarus
Answer: Palutena
In the original "Kid Icarus" for the NES, Palutena is imprisoned in the Palace in the Sky by an evil Medusa. Despite this, she's able to get Pit his Sacred Bow at which point he's able to start his ascent from the underworld with the aim to save her from evil's clutches.
The trope returns in the 3DS game "Kid Icarus: Uprising" when Palutena is possessed by Chaos Kin and Pit has to, once again, battle to save her.
5. Final Fantasy VII
Answer: Aerith
Aerith (or Aeris) Gainsborough is a major character in "Final Fantasy VII" who needs to be saved from a nefarious laboratory in Midgar, though she's later forced to face Sephiroth, the game's final boss, and she dies from her injuries in, what was then, one of gaming's more shocking sequences. Nonetheless, Aerith has become one of the more beloved side-characters of the "Final Fantasy" series because of her fate and her upbeat attitude despite it.
Her tragedy fuels the latter half of the game.
6. Super Mario Sunshine
Answer: Peach
While from the outset this game never seemed like a 'save the princess' mission, it inevitably became one when she and Mario headed to Pinna Park in an early-game trip through Delfino Isle's beautiful locales. At the beginning of this game, Mario is incriminated when a shadowy version of himself starts littering the tropical region with a paint-like substance.
His punishment is to clean it up, which he does using the FLUDD contraption. Bowser and his son are later revealed to be involved.
7. Donkey Kong
Answer: Pauline
Back in the early days, when Mario was known as 'Jumpman' and "Donkey Kong" was a foe you fought on arcade systems, the aim of the game was to save a woman named Pauline from the top of a structure inhabited by a giant ape. Pauline would later become known as Princess Toadstool on console games like "Super Mario Bros.", and then she would change her name to Peach by the time "Super Mario 64" rolled around.
8. Star Fox Adventures
Answer: Krystal
In this action-adventure title for the Gamecube, Star Fox-- without his typical Arwing-- has to head through levels on a Dinosaur Planet to save Krystal, who's been trapped in a crystal atop a palace in an attempt to free spirits that could reveal more about her past.
The perpetrator is later revealed to be series antagonist Andross who, despite being destroyed frequently in previous games, has inhabited a statue and been puppeteering some locals the whole time.
9. Kingdom Hearts
Answer: Kairi
The whole driving force behind Sora's quest in "Kingdom Hearts" is to save the girl he loves, Kairi, from the darkness and bring her back to Destiny Island, though this turns out to be pretty difficult, especially with the convoluted mythology of the series spanning countless Disney worlds as seen in the cinematic universe. Oddly enough, the series features a number of different damsels.
As Sora navigates the worlds (along with Donald Duck and Goofy), he has to help various Disney princesses in their predicaments to continue.
10. Luigi's Mansion
Answer: Mario
In a rare bout, Luigi plays the hero in Gamecube's "Luigi's Mansion". During this game, Mario inherits a spooky, old, haunted mansion and soon goes missing. It's up to Luigi to head inside and, using Professor E. Gadd's infernal machinery, suck up ghosts that would be better relegated to magical paintings. In the end, Luigi has to fight the King Boo and save Mario from being stuck in a painting himself.
It wouldn't be the first time Luigi has had to step in to save his brother though. It happened before in the SNES game "Mario is Missing".
