Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do you mean? You don't know who this character is? This character has appeared in dozens of magazines and numerous games! I don't know if I can even bear to let you stand over my shoulder and watch! If you don't know this guy now, you never will. If you need a hint, I'm playing "Halo". Now shoo! What is the name of my character?

Answer: Master Chief

You don't know what "Halo" is? Why it's probably one of the biggest games to emerge from Microsoft's first console, the Xbox. Originally developed by then-unknown Bungie Studios (who later catapulted the series to notoriety when it spawned a large franchise), "Halos" first game was the top-selling game for the Xbox selling millions upon millions of units in its first five years.

Other games in the series have consistently been high-earners in revenue and review scores. Master Chief is the unnamed hero of the first three games in the series.

His image is one of the most popular faces in the Microsoft line of exclusive games. "Halo" was also released on PC.
2. Okay, I can understand if you don't 'get' video games', but how can you not know this one? I mean, when Sega started this franchise back in the early 90s, they replaced their company mascot! If you know any video game characters, you'd know that one! What popular game necessitated the change of Sega's mascot?

Answer: Sonic the Hedgehog

First appearing in 1991 on the Sega Genesis console, "Sonic the Hedgehog" propelled Sega into one of the leading console gaming companies in the world (up there with Nintendo). Since his debut, Sonic has become one of the most famous faces in video games appearing in many games on different consoles up and down the roster (from Sega to Nintendo to Playstation to Microsoft).

His early 2D adventures are among the highest-rated platform originals while his exploits in the seventh-generation of gaming, including Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360, haven't been so well-received, possibly due to their elaboration of the otherwise simplistic style of gaming and departure from the second dimension model. Sonic later appeared in "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" (Wii) as a playable and unlockable character, much to the fans' enjoyment.
3. OK, trust me. They're still zombies. They may move freakishly fast, but they're still the shambling, living dead. There's not much you can really do about that. I understand, before, "Resident Evil" was in Raccoon City, but they had to take the game somewhere, right? In what continent is "Resident Evil 5" set?

Answer: Africa

Although "Resident Evil" typically doesn't leave the Greater Raccoon City area, later games in the series took players to Antarctica, Rockfort Island, Spain, and Africa for their narratives. In "Resident Evil 5", Chris Redfield makes his way to Kijuju in West Africa in order to investigate some goings-on in the area. What he discovers is that horrible 'Umbrella thing' again and we're all treated to more great third-person zombie action.

Much like the critically-acclaimed "Resident Evil 4", we find a very intense 'follow-the-path' style shooter with a storyline that should, for the most part, wrap up this part of the canon. Just keep the gun handy.
4. Aw, man! You made me crash my kart! Now I'm stuck between a pipe and a hard place. You have to know I'm playing "Mario Kart 64". I don't think I could bear it if you didn't know about this game. Which of these characters could I not possibly be?

Answer: Daisy

Daisy, Peach's counterpart, must've picked up a license as the Gamecube was released since she never actually appeared in "Mario Kart 64", but instead waited for the released of "Mario Kart: Double Dash" six years later on Nintendo's proceeding console.

Many players regard "Mario Kart 64" to be the classic "Mario Kart" despite the fact that one was released on the Super Nintendo many years earlier, but the Nintendo 64 version brought the game to a more realistic 3D set of tracks and the four-player multiplayer option just added to the fun.

As the games progressed, "Mario Kart Wii" was inevitably released in 2008 with an attachable wheel allowing players to actually steer their karts with the Wii Remote.
5. Trust me, this Cloud isn't poofy and white. You're not looking for something up in the sky and you're not looking for something that rains down on you. You seriously can't figure out who Cloud is? What Playstation game is Cloud from?

Answer: Final Fantasy VII

Cloud Strife, the silent protagonist of "Final Fantasy VII" (often regarded as one of the most popular games in the series and on the first Playstation console), also appeared in "The Dirge of Cerberus" (PS2), "Crisis Core" (PSP), the "Kingdom Hearts" series and the film "Advent Children". One of the most famous characters of the series, he takes his place at the top with Squall, Cid, Yuna, and others. Since its release in 1997, "Final Fantasy VII" became the top-selling title in the "Final Fantasy" canon sending out more than ten million copies.

It is also available on the Playstation Network for download.
6. Why am I shorter than the rest of the characters? Come on! Don't you know your James Bond characters? I'm Oddjob...with the bowler's hat. Sure, he may be a bit of a cheap character to use, but he's classic. Which console was the game "Goldeneye 007" originally played on?

Answer: Nintendo 64

Created by Rare, "Goldeneye 007" was originally released as a first-person shooter in 1997 and became one of the most popular games on the Nintendo 64 console. Receiving numerous near-perfect scores and 'Game of the Year' Awards, Rare later created the game "Perfect Dark" on an improved "Goldeneye 007" engine and became one of Xbox's major developers. Although the villainous Oddjob doesn't actually appear during the campaign part of the game, he is unlockable as an additional character in the famous multiplayer aspect of "Goldeneye 007".

He's notorious for being shorter than the other characters in the game forcing everyone to aim down as you get closer to them.
7. "Banjo-Kazooie"- you didn't know the name of that one? Of course I'm controlling a bear...of course he's trying to find jigsaw puzzle pieces. Could you please stop bothering me? What kind of animal is Kazooie?

Answer: Breegull

Released on the Nintendo 64, "Banjo-Kazooie" was another of Rare's major hits before Microsoft snatched them up and brought their franchises to the Xbox 360. Taking a character out of "Diddy Kong Racing" (it's not the first time), Rare places Banjo with a partner (the breegull Kazooie) and sends him on a quest to defeat the evil witch, Gruntilda, at the top of her sprawling lair at the top of Spiral Mountain to save his sister, Tooty.

The game was followed by the sequel, "Banjo-Tooie", on the Nintendo 64 and later "Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts" for the Xbox 360. Both N64 titles are also available on the Xbox Live Arcade.
8. Okay, come on. You know this game. There's guitars, there's bass, there's drums, there's a microphone...everybody knows this game by now! Of course you play them! Which band was the first to have an exclusive guitar/band-oriented music game released?

Answer: Aerosmith

Although "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" was released before the drum set and microphone were added to most music games, the game allowed for up to two players to play on a guitar or bass to songs created by or which inspired the band Aerosmith. Released in 2008, "Rock Band" actually released the previous year with microphones and drums; "Guitar Hero" never got the extra instruments until "World Tour" in late 2008. "Guitar Hero" later released Metallica and Van Halen-centric games in 2009 while "The Beatles: Rock Band" sold many copies upon its release in September 2009. "The Beatles: Rock Band" was notable in itself for featuring harmonizing vocal tracks.
9. Even if you know nothing about popular video games, casual games are all the rage, and stuff like "Bejeweled", "Zuma", and "Peggle" are quite well-known. Come on. If you don't understand 'video games', you've had to have heard about one of these! Which developer is known for creating these games?

Answer: PopCap Games

Opening in 2000 and releasing "Bewjeweled" about a year later, PopCap Games became one of the world's leading developers of casual gaming titles, games for people who don't care for mainstream games per se. Oddly enough, casual gaming hit it big and became a driving force in the overall scheme of things.

When the Wii was introduced, it opened up doors for new players young and old. PopCap flourished with games like "Peggle", "Peggle Nights", "Zuma", "Noah's Ark", and "Plants vs. Zombies", all of which gained critical appeal for their content, and all of which also appear on consoles as well as PCs and Macs (including the iPhone).
10. Wait- you're asking me what I'm holding in my hand? No, it's not a Nintendo DS...no, it's also not a Nintendo DS Lite. It's the next step up the handheld ladder. Are you sure you haven't heard of this? What handheld system comes next?

Answer: Nintendo DSi

Released in Japan in November 2008 and in North America in April 2009, the Nintendo DSi was slightly smaller, slightly thinner, slightly brighter, and slightly more powerful. With a camera on the outside of the device and on the inside, players would be able to use their device for photo manipulation as well as gaming.

In addition to this, the DSi contained built-in WiFi for the DSiWare service. Like with WiiWare, players could download games or applications online to play on the handheld- something the DS Lite couldn't do. In similar news: about four months later, Sony released the less-popular PSP Go which required players to download all games or movies before playing rather than buying a hard copy. Sure seems to be a trend in the way we purchase games, eh?
