Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the most part Steel type Pokemon are weak to three main types. However, because some are dual types some Steel types have other weaknesses. Which of the following has never been a super-effective weakness to at least one Steel type Pokemon?

Answer: Dark

Steel type Pokemon are some of the strongest Pokemon as defense goes. Of the seventeen types of Pokemon, they can withstand an attack without taking much damage from eleven types. Their only three weaknesses are Fighting, Ground, and Fire. They are also completely immune to Poison types.

They take regular damage from Electric, Water, and Ice types. Steel Pokemon are super effective against Rock and Ice types. A Pokemon that has had a weakness of Electric attacks could be Skarmory a Steel/Flying type.

A Pokemon that could have weakness against Water would be Steelix a Steel/Ground type. Then except for a few, Steel types are naturally weak to Ground types. Although the Beldum family is part Psychic since Dark is not that effective against Steel it only does normal damage and is not super-effective.
2. There are only two pure Steel types in the series. Where were these two Pokemon originally found?

Answer: Hoenn

The only pure-Steel Pokemon are Mawile, originally appearing in "Pokemon Ruby," and the legendary Registeel appearing in both "Pokemon Ruby" and "Pokemon Sapphire." Registeel was one of the Regi trio, the other's being Regirock and Regice. In order to gain access to open the caverns to these three you would need a Waillord and a Relicanth in your party. To get through the cave and to gain access to the Regi's in their cave you had to decipher letters in Braille. Braille consists of bumps and is a means of reading for the blind. If you managed to catch all three of these Regis there was another of the series. If you transferred Regirock, Regice, and Registeel over to one of the Sinnoh games you could get Regigigas.

After getting the National Pokedex, if you had all three Regis in your party and went to the bottom of the Snowpoint Temple in Snowpoint City, you would activate the Regigigas statue and have an opportunity to catch it.

Another interesting fact about the Regis is that each one is weak to Fighting type moves.
3. This Pokemon was originally introduced when Steel types were not heard of. Later it gained the Steel type as did its evolution. In the fourth generation of Pokemon, its evolution got another evolution which was also part Steel. What Pokemon am I describing?

Answer: Magnemite

Magnemite was introduced as #81 in the Kanto Pokedex and has retained that number in the National Pokedex. Originally Magnemite, and its evolved form Magneton, were considered only Electric types. However, once they reappeared in "Pokemon Gold" and "Pokemon Silver" they were considered Electric/Steel types.

Although this offered them more protection against other types it also gained them two more weaknesses and made them exceptionally weak to Ground types as both Steel and Electric are weak to Ground attacks.

In the Sinnoh region the Magnemite family was given another evolution, Magnezone. Magnezone was also an Electric/Steel type and evolved from Magneton when you leveled one up inside Mt. Coronet. This was only one of two Pokemon that evolved this way.

The other was Nosepass who would evolve into Probopass.
4. Which region introduced the most Steel-type Pokemon?

Answer: Sinnoh

Pokemon veterans should have been able to rule out Kanto right away as Steel-types were not introduced until the Johto region, the same goes for Dark types. You would think that since the Johto region introduced Steel types that they would have the most but they actually have the least only introducing four.

The four were Foretress, Steelix, Scizor, and Skarmory. Hoenn introduced nine, and Sinnoh introduced a whopping eleven. The eleven Steel Pokemon in Sinnoh were Empoleon, Shieldon, Bastiodon, Wormadam (Trash Cloak), Bronzor, Bronzong, Lucario, Magnezone, Probopass, Dialga, and Heatran.
5. How many "legendary" Pokemon have been Steel types?

Answer: Four

"Legendary" Pokemon are usually referred to as there is only one of it in each version. There is one exception in this group as it can't be obtained except in a special event and that Pokemon is Jirachi, the Wish Pokemon who is a Steel/Psychic type. Originally, Jirachi could only be obtained via a promotional disc for the Gamecube before the release of "Pokemon Colosseum." Jirachi could later be obtained in the United States at Gamestop stores from February the 27th to February the 13th of 2010. Oddly enough, February the 13th was the day before the release of "Pokemon SoulSilver" and "Pokemon HeartGold" in the United States.

When transferred into the new versions, Jirachi would provide an extra course for the Pokewalker. This Jirachi arrived at Lv. 5 with the moves Draco Meteor, Confusion, Rest, and of course Wish.

This same Jirachi could be obtained over Wi-Fi connection June26th to July the 16th 2010 in the United States. Jirachi's signature move is Doom Desire which is a Steel version of Future Sight.

Although it has more attack power than Future Sight, it also has a lower accuracy, and less PP. The other three "legendary" Pokemon that are part Steel are Registeel, a pure Steel type, Dialga, a Steel/Dragon type, and Heatran, a Steel/Fire type.
6. In a special downloadable Pokewalker course called the Winner's Path, two Steel type Pokemon could be found and one of these two was a very special Beldum. What was so special about the Beldum?

Answer: it had more than one move

Beldum, in a sense, is kind of like the Magikarp version of the Steel types. While leveling up a Magikarp it can only learn three moves Splash, Tackle, and Flail. While some people don't know a Magikarp can learn Flail because many people evolve it into a Gyarados by then. Beldum on the other hand can only learn one move until level twenty when it evolves into a Metang, and that move is Take Down. Neither of these Pokemon, Magikarp nor Beldum, can learn any TM or HM moves either. So having a Beldum that knows more than Take Down is a rare find. Once Beldum evolves into Metang it gains Steel type move Metal Claw and Psychic type move Confusion.

The Beldum found on Winner's Path knows Take Down, Iron Defense, Zen Headbutt, and Iron Head, a move that neither Metang nor Metagross can learn.

The Beldum starts at level five and is holding a Shuca Berry which guards against a super-effective Ground-type move. Beldum and its evolution family also has the ability Clear Body which means none of their stats can be lowered by an attack.

Originally, Beldum appeared in Steven's house in Mossdeep City in the Hoenn region after becoming the Pokemon champion. The other Steel type Pokemon that appears is a Bronzor. This special Bronzor knows the move Trick Room which it can't learn on its own and has it's weaknesses guarded. It has the ability Levitate which protects it from Ground-type moves and is the Steel Pokemon holding an Occa Berry protecting it from Fire-type moves. In the wild, Bronzor and Bronzong's other ability is Heatproof which makes Fire-type moves less effective, in which case a Shuca Berry would be a good option.
7. This Steel-type Pokemon was the first boss in "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team" for the DS and "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for the Game Boy Advance. What Pokemon was it?

Answer: Skarmory

Skarmory was one of the Steel Pokemon introduced in the Johto region. Skarmory is a Steel/Flying type and could be found only in "Pokemon Silver" on the route south of Blackthorne City. It reappeared in the Hoenn region then took a hiatus in the Sinnoh region, until you became the Pokemon champion.

Then you could find it in the wild on Route 227 leading to Stark Mountain where the legendary Steel/Fire Pokemon Heatran resided. Skarmory then would appear once again in the remake of the Johto games but only in the SoulSilver version and much like the original Johto games Gligar could be found only in the HeartGold version.
8. Empoleon is the only Steel type Pokemon to evolve from a starter Pokemon. Despite that though it only learns one Steel type move by itself. What is that move?

Answer: Metal Claw

While many would think that since it resembles a penguin it would be Steel Wing that is not the case. Metal Claw is a fairly powerful move with pretty good accuracy and on occasion it will raise the attack of the user by one level. If you don't evolve Piplup at level sixteen the only way it can learn Metal Claw, after evolving is by a Heart Scale because as soon as it evolves into Prinplup at level sixteen it learns Metal Claw. Empoleon's Water type protects it from both a Water type weakness and a Steel type weakness.

However, it does gain two new weaknesses that it's Water types Piplup and Prinplup did not have. Water types are weak to Grass but Steel doesn't take much damage from Grass. In the same way Steel is weak to Fire but Fire can't do much against Water.

Unfortunately, Empoleon still has it's Electric weakness and now that it's part Steel it also to worry about Ground and Fighting type moves. The good news is that Empoleon can learn moves that can counter both of these types. Ground is weak to Water and since Empoleon is a water starter, that's not too much of a problem.

In the same way since Empoleon's family resembles a penguin and a penguin is a bird it learns Flying type moves, such as Drill Peck, which do wonders against most Fighting types.
9. If you caught a Forretress in the wild and raised it up to level 100, how many moves would it be able to learn that causes it to hurt itself or take damage to use? Exclude TM and HMs and moves that it may learn from a move tutor and base this off of it's move set in "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold."

Answer: Five

Forretress is one of the two Bug/Steel types, the other being Scizor. While these Pokemon can defend themselves from almost every weakness that Bug types and Steel types they have, they're highly vulnerable to Fire as both Steel and Bug are weak to Fire. Forretress evolves from the Bug type Pineco at level 31.

These Pokemon have been known to learn moves that cause large damage to opponents...and themselves. As evidenced in the anime series, the Pineco owned by Brock used it's Selfdestrict attack constantly.

The other four moves that cause damage to itself or requires Forretress to take damage are Take Down, Bide, Explosion, and Double Edge. In a complete contrast, both Pineco and Forretress have the ability Sturdy which makes them invulnerable to 1 hit KO moves such as Fissure and Sheer Cold. If only it worked on attacks caused by themselves.
10. I am ending with a question about one of my favorite Steel types, Lucario. In the Battle Frontier in Sinnoh, mainly in the Battle Arena when going against Fighting types you may encounter a Lucario with a very interesting way to use Focus Punch. Which move does this Lucario use to make almost absolutely sure that Focus Punch hits?

Answer: Substitute

Substitute has been a move ever since the first Pokemon games came out for the Game Boy. It takes away 1/4 of your maximum HP and creates a double which will take damage for you until it fades away. Many moves that hit multiple times such as Fury Swipes or Rock Blast can take care of these easily as if the Substitute fades before the attack is up the target will take damage but since none of these moves are super-effective against Steel/Fighting type Lucario there's a problem. Lucario will use Substitute in the Battle Arena then use Focus Punch. Since the next turn the Substitute will take damage for Lucario, even if it fades, Lucario's Focus Punch will almost always hit and with an attack power above 100, it's almost a 1-hit KO unless you're resistant against Fighting types.

The Vielstone Gym Leader, Maylene, also uses a Lucario as her most powerful Pokemon. Another trainer, Riley, who is found on Iron Island also uses Lucario as his main Pokemon. If you take Riley to the end of Iron Island and have five or less Pokemon in your party he will give you a Pokemon egg. Once the egg hatches, you are the owner of a Fighting type Riolu, which is the pre-evolved form of Lucario.

In order to get Riolu to evolve into Lucario you must have a strong friendship with it and level it up much like Chansey evolving into Blissey.
