Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The shoot 'em up genre--often abbreviated as shmup--is usually a game in which players control some sort of spacecraft and fire their weapons at a seemingly endless swarm of enemies. Horizontal shmups such as "Gradius" and "U.N. Squadron" tend to be more common than vertical shmups such as "1943" or "Exed Exes". A sub-genre of shoot 'em ups, 'bullet hell' or 'curtain fire' games are often referred to by what name?

Answer: manic shmups

Games under the 'manic shmup' label are shoot 'em ups in which enemies fire massive walls of bullets at a time often leaving little room for escape. These games tend to be incredibly hard as the openings in the walls of bullets tend to be slightly bigger than the player's hitbox. Examples of 'manic shmups' include "Ikaruga", "DoDonPachi" and the "Touhou" franchise.
2. Vehicular combat--more commonly known as car combat--is a cross between a racer and a fighter. In this genre, vehicles pursue their enemies in a destruction derby-like arena with the intention of destroying them, usually with the aid of machine guns, missiles and other miscellaneous weapons. Which game is credited with the creation of this genre?

Answer: "Twisted Metal"

Created by SingleTrac in 1995, "Twisted Metal" is often considered to be the first car combat game. It was about twelve drivers fighting in a destruction derby in Los Angles on Christmas Eve. The winner would gain an audience with the tournament's creator Calypso at which point he would grant the winner one wish.

The franchise has since become the longest running exclusive series in Playstation history.
3. Beat 'em ups are side-scrolling action titles in which a group of characters is tasking with beating the absolute snot out of any thug that dares cross their path. This particular genre was made massively popular in 1990s arcade galleries. Which of these beat 'em ups featured only three playable characters?

Answer: "Violent Storm"

"Violent Storm" takes place after World War III and the main characters Wade, Kyle and Boris are vigilantes that protect the innocent from the forces of the Geld Gang. However, when a woman named Sheena is snatched away by Geld's right hand man, the three set off to bring an end to Geld once and for all.

Much like "Double Dragon", in a game will multiple players, the one that deals the final blow to Geld himself hooks up with Sheena while the others look on with envy.
4. During the transition from 2D to 3D, some games decided to only make half the trip. Dubbed '2.5D', these platformers followed a strict 2D plane that curved around a 3D environment. Which of these games is NOT an example of a 2.5D game?

Answer: "Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles"

In "Klonoa: Door to Phantomile", whenever Klonoa reached a turning point in the path, the camera would just curve around the corner creating the illusion that he actually turned the corner rather than just continuing to run forward. In "Spider: The Video Game", the controls would change from left and right to up and down as the camera turned to face the wall that the player had just reached allowing them to start moving the spider up the wall.

While "Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles" is a 2D game set in a 3D environment, the player is restricted to 2D movement.
5. Survival horror has taken a bit of a decline in quality recently but back in the day, feature length movies couldn't create as much tension or fear. One survival horror game in particular warned players that, "The horrifying theme of this game may not be suitable for young children... or cowards." Which game's advisory warning said this?

Answer: "Splatterhouse"

Arguably the first parental advisory warning in gaming history, "Splatterhouse" was one of the biggest examples of pre-ESRB violence in video games. It featured gruesome monsters, surprisingly detailed decapitations and enough scary imagery to give a young child nightmares for weeks. Actually, just before the ESRB was established, the third game in the series was released for the Sega Genesis.

The back of the box claimed that, "This is the game rating systems were made for."
6. In 1996, "Tetris Attack" was released for the Super Nintendo and became a pretty big hit. However, the game bears no resemblance to the "Tetris" franchise and not surprisingly turned out to be a "Mario"-themed re-imaging of what other puzzle game?

Answer: "Panel de Pon"

"Panel de Pon" uses a cursor to swap blocks with one another with the goal being to connect three or more of a particular block color together. The game had a story mode, an endless mode for practicing speed and technique and a versus mode for multiplayer action. "Tetris Attack" did nothing to the game save for swap out the main character Lip and her friends and replacing them with Yoshi and a bunch of other assorted "Mario" characters.
7. Kart racers differ from normal racers in that the vehicles are usually restricted to just some sort of kart and that items littered throughout the stage can give players an advantage over their opponents. The genre has been popular since the days of "Super Mario Kart" and since then, many other franchise have tried cashing in on the genre. Which of these franchises does NOT have a kart racer?

Answer: "Ape Escape"

Despite the kid-friendly gameplay and storylines, "Ape Escape" has never thought to put a monkey in a go-kart. "Diddy Kong's Racing" however put a squirrel in one, specifically a squirrel named Conker. That game was his first appearance and he later got his own game on the original Gameboy.

Unfortunately, he wasn't selling very well so a complete overhaul of the character began. We know the end result as "Conker's Bad Fur Day".
8. 'Edutainment' is a specific genre of video game that is created in the hopes of educating the player. While many of these types of games were released for the PC, others managed to make their way to actual consoles. Which of these 'edutainment' games is NOT real?

Answer: "Action Andy's Asthma Avengers"

"Captain Novolin" was an action-platformer about a diabetic superhero out to stop the sinister Blubberman. "Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon" talked about the dangers of smoking tobacco. "Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus" taught kids about controlling their asthma. All three games were released by Raya for the Super Nintendo in the early to mid-'90s.
9. The point-and-click genre features games often released for the PC in which players must--obviously--point and click around the environment and collect certain objects to help progress them through the game. Which of these games is NOT a member of this genre?

Answer: "Super Solvers Spellbound"

While most "Super Solvers" games are point-and-click titles, "Spellbound" is a game that helps children practice their spelling for different spelling bees.

Not only was "The Neverhood" a point-and-click title but it is considered to be one of the best. The game is an artistic marvel in that the entire game is animated in clay. Created by Doug TenNapel, "The Neverhood" was praised for its visual direction, soundtrack and sense of humor. For instance, if protagonist Klayman eats a fruit from a tree at a certain point in the game, he'll burp. Eating a second fruit will cause him to burp longer and a third fruit will initiate a 40-second long plethora of sound effects played over a vague burping sound.
10. The first-person shooter genre is one of the best-selling genres of all time thanks to the "Halo" and "Call of Duty" franchises. Having evolved significantly over the years, FPS games have since found a massive following in the gaming industry. Which of these FPS games was the first to contain a sniper rifle with a zoomable scope?

Answer: "Goldeneye 007"

Heralded as the game that first popularized the FPS genre, "Goldeneye 007" pioneered genre mainstays such as the aforementioned zoomable sniper rifle, mission based objectives and a console multiplayer mode. The game's multiplayer mode in particular has been praised as being one of the best local multiplayer experiences in gaming. Surprisingly, this feature of the game was added only two weeks before the game was released.
