The full title is "Halo: Combat Evolved", released in 2001 for the Xbox. The player controls Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, who fights the Covenant, a collection of alien races, as they seek to take control of the Halos, which they think will offer salvation.

However, it is discovered that they are meant to be weapons, capable of destroying an entire species. Sequels to the game include "Halo 2" for the Xbox and "Halo 3" for the Xbox 360.

"Pac-man" is the addictive arcade game that we all know and love. We've all heard of him, and his adventures inside a maze, munching away on yellow dots and avoiding the ghosts. Eating a power-up grants Pac-man the ability to eat the ghosts for a short time. The highest score you can get is 3,333,360 points, and American Billy Mitchell did just that on the 3rd of July, 1999.

The powerhouse of the MMORPG genre, "World of Warcraft" (PC) is played by over ten million people worldwide, and takes the title of most popular MMORPG. When creating a character, the player can choose one of the two factions, Alliance or Horde. Each faction has its own races. Within each of these races, a player can choose a class. So, for instance, you could create an Undead Rogue, which is part of the Horde.

The game takes place in Azeroth, a huge magical world.

"The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" is the sequel to the critically acclaimed "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" for the Nintendo 64. The game takes place in the land of Termina, as opposed to Hyrule as per normal, as the protagonist, Link, seeks to stop the Skull Kid, under the influence of Majora's Mask, from crashing the moon into Termina.

A perpetual three-day cycle is used in the game, so Link must learn several songs on his ocarina to allow him to control time and send him back to try and stop the moon from crashing into Termina. With its darker theme and increased difficulty, some consider this game to be better than "Ocarina of Time".

The sequel to "Super Mario 64", "Super Mario Sunshine", released for the Gamecube, is the second full 3D Mario adventure. Mario, Peach, Toadsworth, and some Toads take a holiday at Isle Delfino, but find a mysterious figure resembling Mario vandalizing the resort with graffiti. Mario is blamed, and so must set about cleaning up the resort, whilst getting rid of the Shadow Mario. Mario uses a device called F.L.U.D.D, a water squirter, which can spray water and allow Mario to hover. Upgrades to this device can be found throughout the game.

"Wii Sports" was a launch title bundled with the Nintendo Wii. The game features five sports (Bowling, Boxing, Golf, Tennis and Baseball), plus training and Wii Fitness modes. As of January 2010, "Wii Sports" was the highest selling video game ever. A sequel, "Wii Sports Resort" was released in 2009, along with the new Wii MotionPlus peripheral for the Wii Remote.

And so we come to "Tetris", the easily recognizable arcade puzzle game, first developed in Russia, but later acquired by Nintendo. The name is a pormanteau of the prefix 'tetra-', meaning 'four', and tennis, the favourite game of the creator, Alexey Patjinov.

The aim of the game is to slot small blocks, known as Tetronimoes, together to form complete rows, at which point the row will disappear. Each block contains four segments, and there are seven different designs.

"Star Fox" (released as "Starwing" in Europe and Australia) is a third person rail shooter for the SNES. Starting on the planet of Corneria and ending at the Planet Venom, players can choose one of three paths through the Lylat system, each having a unique series of levels.

The game implemented the Super FX processor, which accelerated the graphics display, meaning improved 3D graphics. The series is one of Nintendo's most popular.

Valve's physics-based puzzle game, "Portal", redefined the genre with its use of portals to navigate a test chamber. The player controls Chell, a test subject imprisoned in the Aperture Science Testing Facility, guided only by a malevolent robot named GLaDOS.

The game is iconic for its gameplay, and dark humour. It was bundled with other Valve games in "The Orange Box", and is also available to download via Steam.

The kooky bandicoot we've grown to love started out in 1996 in "Crash Bandicoot" for the PlayStation 1. The series is set on the fictional Wumpa Islands, located south of Australia. The main antagonist is Doctor Neo Cortex, who created Crash and some of his friends, and seeks to destroy Crash. Crash can spin to break crates and batter enemies, and collects Wumpa fruit, which will grant him an extra life for every 100. Numerous developers have contributed to the series, with "Naughty Dog" starting it.
