Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Water types have two main weaknesses and many dual water types have a double weakness to one of these attacks. Out of the following, which water types are the most plentiful?

Answer: ones that take double damage from fighting attacks

For the most part, Water Pokemon are weak to electric attacks and grass attacks. One trend that has happened ever since the introduction of Wooper in the Johto region is to make Water/Ground type Pokemon. While this does give them immunity to electric attacks, it does give them a double weakness to grass attacks since Ground types are also weak to grass.

However, Water Pokemon that are weak to fighting attacks are the most plentiful because some water Pokemon are part-Ice, such as Dewgong and Cloyster, or part-Dark such as Crawdaunt and Carvanha. Also Relicanth and Corsola who are Water/Rock types are weak to Fighting moves as well. Dual Water types tend to not work the best at times because they usually end up gaining more weaknesses than losing them.

For example, Tentacool a Water/Poison type does lose it's weakness to Grass attacks but at the same time gains weaknesses to Psychic and Ground attacks. Also just to let you know, there are five water Pokemon who are double weak against Electric attacks, thirteen that are double weak against Grass attacks, and seventeen that are weak to fighting moves.
2. Since Water types are one of the most plentiful types of Pokemon, it is no surprise that putting them all in one egg group would be overwhelming. Which of the following Pokemon only belongs to one egg group?

Answer: Poliwhirl

Horsea belongs to Water Group 1 and the Dragon group. Corphish belongs to Water Group 1 and Water Group 3. Wailord belongs to Water Group 2 and the Field Group. Poliwhirl only belongs to Water Group 1. With three Water Group egg types it can be somewhat difficult to find the proper Pokemon to breed.

It would be a good idea to breed the Poliwag family though as it gained a new evolution in the Johto region. Originally, Poliwhirl would evolve only into Water/Fighting type Poliwrath when exposed to a Water Stone.

In Johto, Poliwhirl would evolve into Water type Politoed, if traded while holding a King's Rock. This was one of the new evolution methods of trading a Pokemon while holding an item. Other examples of this method are trading Porygon with an Up-Grade to turn it into Porygon2, and trading a Scyther with a Metal Coat to turn it into a Scizor.

The other Pokemon that could evolve while being traded with a King's Rock was Slowpoke which would turn into a Slowking when traded.
3. Imagine you have a Mudkip and you are facing a Monferno that knows Grass Knot. Would Mudkip take quadruple damage from this attack due to its type?

Answer: No

Its evolved forms Marshtomp and Swampert would though. Mudkip is the only Pokemon of this series that is not a dual type. Marshtomp and Swampert are Water/Ground types while Mudkip is only a Water type. Water types were the only starters not to acquire another type in the Kanto region, and would not become dual types until the Hoenn region. Bulbasaur, the grass starter in the Kanto region, and all of its forms were Grass/Poison types. Charmander, the fire starter in the Kanto region, once evolving into Charmeleon would then become a Fire/Flying type once it evolved into Charizard.

In the Johto region, all three starters were only one type through all of their forms. In the Hoenn region, the only Pokemon to stay one type through all its forms was Treecko who stayed a Grass Type. Torchic would become a Fire/Fighting type once it evolved into Combusken as Mudkip would become a Water/Ground type once it evolved into Marshtomp.

In the Sinnoh region, all three starters at some point became a dual type. Turtwig would become a Grass/Ground type once it became its final form a Torterra. Chimchar would become a Fire/Fighting type as soon as it evolved into Monferno. Piplup would become a Water/Steel type once it became its final form, Empoleon.
4. In the Hoenn region Wallace was the original Water type Gym leader in the Ruby and Sapphire versions. In "Pokemon Emerald," he became the Pokemon League Champion. Who took his place as the Water type Gym leader?

Answer: Juan

Wallace still was a Water type trainer in "Pokemon Emerald," but someone had to take his place at the Sootopolis Gym. Juan actually was the teacher of Wallace. The first instance of a Gym leader being replaced by another leader was in the Gold and Silver versions. Janine replaced Koga in the Fuchsia City Gym since Koga became part of the Elite Four. Also Blue became the leader of the Viridian City Gym instead of Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket.

The Pokemon league Champion in "Pokemon Ruby" and "Pokemon Sapphire," who is mainly a Steel and Rock type user is Steven.

He could still be battled in "Pokemon Emerald" in Meteor Falls. Also after beating the Elite Four if you went to Mossdeep City you could find a Beldum in his house, the only way to catch one in the Hoenn region. Beldum is a Steel/Psychic type and only knew the move Take Down but once evolving into a Metang and a Metagross it became a formidable Pokemon.

Other Water type Gym leaders include Misty who resides in Cerulean City in the Kanto region, and Crasher Wake who resides in Pastoria City in the Sinnoh region.
5. This Pokemon is one of the few that can actually understand the human language. It also appears in a certain cave in the Johto region, but only one day per week. What is this Pokemon?

Answer: Lapras

Lapras is known as the Transport Pokemon and is a Water/Ice type. In the television series, Ash had a Lapras for a while which he used to get around the Orange Islands. Ash eventually let it go to live with a herd of Lapras. Lapras, in the Kanto region, could be obtained by a worker in the Silph Co. building in Saffron City.

In the Johto region, it only appeared in the Union Cave on Fridays, but you had to know Surf to encounter it. Lapras also was one of the Pokemon used by the Ice-type trainer, Lorelei, who was one of the Elite Four in the Kanto region. Lapras in the Sinnoh region could be found at high levels, in the back part of Victory Road, which could only be accessed after beating the Elite Four.

In one of the Pokedex entries, it is said that Lapras is able to understand human language.
6. Water type Pokemon can be very diverse carrying a variety of dual types. Which Pokemon type has not been combined with a Water type?

Answer: Ghost

The only types that have not been a type combined with Water are Ghost and Fire. The only Normal/Water type that exists is Bibarel which is the evolved form of Bidoof. The Water/Electric types are Chinchou and its evolved form Lanturn. The Water/Bug type is Surskit but it evolves into a Bug/Flying type Masquerain.

However, Surskit can learn Water Sport which weakens Fire's power which would be handy for Masquerain since it is weak against fire. Budew, the pre-evolved form of Roselia, can also learn Water Sport. Even though Ghost and Water have never been combined, there is one exception, and that is Rotom, but only in "Pokemon Platinum." Received via Mystery Gift over Wi-Fi, you can obtain an item called the Secret Key which unlocks a secret room in the Team Galactic building in Eterna City.

In this room there is a lawn mower, a washer, a refrigerator, an oven, and a fan. Rotom can enter into one of these machines, change it's type and learn a new move. In this sense, if it jumps into a washer it becomes a Water/Ghost type.

However, its original form is Electric and Ghost, therefore Rotom is not an official Water/Ghost type.
7. Another interesting bit of Pokedex trivia includes Wartortle. How long are Wartortles believed to live?

Answer: 10,000 years

Although it would be appropriate to call Wartortle the Longevity Pokemon, it is known as the Turtle Pokemon. Later on in the Hoenn region, Relicanth a Rock/Water Pokemon would become the Longevity Pokemon. Squirtle evolves into Wartortle at level sixteen.

The Pokedex entry in "Pokemon Platinum" says, "It is said to live 10,000 years. Its furry tail is popular as a symbol of longevity." Wartortle is very different from Blastoise and Squirtle as it has a furry tail and furry ears. Wartortle will evolve into Blastoise at level 36. Throughout all its forms it has the ability Torrent which boosts the power of Water-type moves if the Pokemon only has one third of its HP left. All the Water starters have this ability.

The same applies for Fire starters which have the ability Blaze, and the Grass starters which have the ability Overgrow.
8. In "Pokemon Colosseum" for the Gamecube, one of the first bosses you fight is called Miror B. His whole team, except for one Pokemon, consists of what Water type Pokemon the first time you fight him?

Answer: Ludicolo

Ludicolo is a very interesting combination of Water and Grass types. Ludicolo is the final evolved form of the Lotad family. Lotad evolves into Lombre at level fourteen and evolves into Ludicolo when exposed to a Water Stone. The Lotad family first appeared in "Pokemon Sapphire," and again appeared in "Pokemon Emerald." The team of Miror B consists of four Ludicolos and the Shadow Pokemon that he has which is Sudowoodo. Miror B always has his team use Rain Dance and for good reason, because Ludicolo's two abilities only work if it's raining. One ability is Swift Swim which increases the Pokemon's speed and the other one is exclusive to the Lotad family and that is Rain Dish. Rain Dish works just like the item Leftovers, as it restores a little HP every turn but only when it's raining. Since Ludicolo is part Grass it loses its weakness to Electric attacks.

Unfortunately, since it is part Grass it gains a weakness to Flying, Bug and Poison.
9. You are walking through the Hoenn region when all of the sudden you're caught in a downpour. What is NOT one of the reasons it may be raining?

Answer: you are near the Sky Pillar

Route 119 in the Hoenn region is where the Weather Institute is located and it is almost always raining while walking on this route. At the Weather Institute you can get a one of a kind Pokemon Castform. Castform is a Normal type but depending on what the weather is like can change it into a different type.

For example, if it's raining, Castform becomes a Water type. Obviously, when a Pokemon uses Rain Dance it starts raining. Even though this only happens if you encounter one in the wild it still may be a reason.

The last reason is because of Kyogre who rests in the Marine Cave. Kyogre is one of four Legendary Pokemon that is a Water type. Kyogre has the unique ability of Drizzle which makes it rain as soon as the Pokemon is put into play.

Not only does Rain Dance power up Water type moves, but it also makes Thunder hit 100% of the time. The other three Legendary Pokemon that are Water types are Suicune, Manaphy and Phione. Manaphy is a very unique Legendary as it is the only one that is able to breed. If you get an egg from a Manaphy a Phione will hatch. Phione is a seperate Pokemon from Manaphy though, as Phione will never evolve.

The Sky Pillar is where the legendary Dragon type Rayquaza resides.
10. The two fossils found in Mt. Moon in the Kanto region were remnants of two Water/Rock type Pokemon. Fossils were found in later games as well. Which one of the following fossils was able to learn a Water type attack, assuming all these Pokemon started at level one?

Answer: Claw Fossil

Up to "Pokemon Platinum" there have been seven fossils and each one of these fossils has had Rock as one of their types. A Helix Fossil will produce an Omanyte and a Dome Fossil will produce a Kabuto. Both of these Pokemon are Water/Rock type and so are their evolved forms Omastar and Kabutops.

The other fossil that was able to be found in the Kanto region was Old Amber which would produce an Aerodactyl a Rock/Flying type. The only other Pokemon that could learn a Water type without the help of TMs, HMs, or egg moves is Anorith. Anorith is a Rock/Bug type that can be revived from a Claw Fossil, and can learn Water Gun at level thirteen.

A Root Fossil produces Lileep a Rock/Grass type, a Skull Fossil will produce a Cranidos a pure Rock type, and an Armor Fossil will produce a Shieldon a Rock/Steel type.
