Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a polo player on horseback with polo stick held high. Which company does he 'work for'?

Answer: Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren has used the polo player logo since 1972. His corporation has gone to court a few times to defend use of the horse and rider. Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz in The Bronx, New York. His clothing line has expanded many times and he has branched out of clothing. In 2009, Forbes estimated Lauren's wealth at $2.8 billion, the 224th richest person in the world.
2. This should take you back a bit, it's not seen much anymore. A red horse with wings flying high above the station. Do you know his 'boss'?

Answer: Mobil Oil

In 1966, the red Pegasus (winged horse) was officially removed from Mobil's company logos. However, if you drive around, specially in small town USA, you'll see gas stations, that used to be 'service' stations with the old symbol on the signage. Mobil has changed their name many times since the 1940's and eventually merged with Exxon, becoming ExxonMobil.
3. Back to the present day - a sphere made of puzzle pieces with letters and symbols on each piece. You probably see it most days but for whom or what is it a logo?

Answer: Wikipedia

It's hard to believe that Wiki has been around a relatively short period of time but they were still working on the logo in mid 2006. The sphere represents the globe and there are 58 puzzle pieces. Most of the letters and characters are W for different countries around the world.
4. This comes around every few years, 5 colorful interlocking rings. What does it represent?

Answer: The Olympics

The Olympic flag was designed in 1914 and first used at the 1920 Olympics. The intertwined rings represent the unity of 5 inhabited continents (North and South America considered one). One of the 5 colors used was on every national flag at the time of its design.
5. Picture a galloping horse, tail straight out behind, legs crossed beneath. Which product will claim this symbol?

Answer: Ford Mustang

There are a couple of explanations on how the name (and later emblem) evolved. The Ford Mustang was first introduced in 1964 and started a whole line of cars called 'pony cars'. This type car is small, powerful and light. The body styles from one manufacturer to another are similarly proportioned.
6. This is used by many people, not necessarily one particular company or organization; a circle made of black and white in an S shape. What is this symbol called?

Answer: Yin and Yang

Although yin and yang started out as part of the Chinese culture, it has become important in modern western and pop culture. The symbol means something different to all who see it; good and bad, light and dark, male and female. But the really zen part is that the whole is greater than the complementary opposites that make it.
7. Another colorful one, striped fruit with a bite out of one side? Which one ate the fruit?

Answer: Apple Computers

Apple Computers used the rainbow striped apple from 1976 thru 1998. There was a logo used at start up in 1976 that looks like something from the Victorian era. The current logo is the apple with a 'bite out' shape, but all one color (silver).
8. Picture a fleur-de-lys with rope encircling, tied in a square knot at the bottom. Can you think of a company or organization that might claim this one?

Answer: World Organization of Scouts

Lord Baden-Powell designed the emblem. The three branches of the fleur-de-lis stand for Obedience to Scout Law, Duty to God, and Service to Others. Stars on two of the branches symbolize Knowledge and Truth. Later, a rope was added around the fleur-de-lis showing the strength of the World Scout Movement.
9. You see a simple fish made of two curved lines, crossed at one end. What does it call to mind?

Answer: Christian Symbol

In pre-Christian times, the fish represented several goddesses. It was originally used by the Christians as a secret symbol. Many of Christ's disciples were fisherman and fish are significant in several places in the Bible. Now, people wear fish jewelry or place decals on their cars to show all that they are Christian.
10. How about bright red lips, wide apart, red tongue sticking out. Bringing anything to mind? Have I ended with a 'rock' or are you on a 'roll'?

Answer: Rolling Stones Album Cover

John Pasche created the "Tongue and Lips" design in 1971 for a Rolling Stones album. In 2003, VH1 labeled it the '#1 Greatest Album Cover' of all time. The original artwork is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
