Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This giant art museum is located on 82nd Street and 5th Avenue (Museum Mile), right next to Central Park. The museum's permanent collection includes over two million works of art, from ancient to modern times. What is its name?

Answer: The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka the Met) is certainly one of the best known museums in New York. The Cloisters is a lesser-known branch of the Met that is located in Fort Tryon Park and focuses on the art and architecture of Medieval Europe.
More info on the Met: http://www.metmuseum.org/home.asp
2. Another popular museum on Museum Mile is the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Who designed this modern NYC landmark?

Answer: Frank Lloyd Wright

The Guggenheim's design has been criticized for "creating a museum environment that might overpower the art inside." On the other hand, it's worth a trip just to see the building, even if the exhibit is so-so (which is rare). For those unable to walk up the spiral ramp (or too lazy), don't worry - there's an elevator! In fact, it's a lot nicer to take the elevator to the top, and see the exhibit going down.

3. This "museum" is in reality more of an interactive, educational, science playspace for all ages. Highly popular with kids, the museum also features an outdoor discovery playground. What is it?

Answer: New York Hall of Science

The NY Hall of Science, located in Queens, is one of my favorite museums. Built as a pavilion for the 1964/1965 World's Fair, this museum is worthy of a full-day trip. There's something for everyone, from a bubble-blowing table to chemistry demonstrations to a huge ribosome.

4. These two museums are devoted to Jewish identity, history and culture. What are they?

Answer: Jewish Museum and Museum of Jewish Heritage

Both great museums, for Jews and non-Jews alike. The Jewish museum is the largest Jewish museum in the Western Hemisphere. The Museum of Jewish Heritage is a "Living Memorial to the Holocaust."

5. This little museum is not as well known as some of the previous ones, but is nevertheless a gem. Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, this museum looks much as it did back in the 1800s. Can you name it?

Answer: Mount Vernon Hotel Museum

Originally built as a carriage house in 1799, it was converted into a day hotel in 1826 after a fire burned down the main house. In 1866 it became home for three generations of a New York family. Opened to the public in 1939, the Mt. Vernon Hotel Museum serves as a reminder of life in the 19th century. A Children's Corner contains plastic food, reproductions of the museum's artifacts, and 19th century-style clothing.

6. In this Manhattan museum, you might find yourself looking up at a life-size whale hanging from the ceiling, or perhaps examining a section of a 1000-year-old tree.

Answer: American Museum of Natural History

Located on Central Park West and 81st Street, the Natural History museum also has a gorgeous planetarium (the Hayden Planetarium, in the Rose Center for Earth and Space). It is impossible to see everything in one day, try as one might. Suggested donation is $14 for adults but, like the Met, it is merely a suggestion. Tickets for IMAX movies or space shows are sold with admission ($21 for adults, $12 for kids).

7. Which of the following museums would one go to to view modern art?

Answer: MoMA

MoMA stands for the Museum of Modern Art, so that was an easy one! MoMa is one of the most popular art museums in NYC, especially after its reopening in the new building (which is nearly twice as large as the former building). MoMA's outdoor sculpture garden is a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of midtown. Admission is pricey ($20), but well worth it, since admission to P.S.1 and audio guides are included.

8. Which of these museums is NOT in Manhattan?

Answer: New York Transit Museum

The New York Transit Museum is in Brooklyn, though there is a "gallery annex" in Grand Central (42nd St). Exhibits include the building of the subway system and NYC's trolleys and buses.

9. At which of these museums would I be able to search for and watch a specific episode of an old television program?

Answer: Museum of Television and Radio

Besides their exhibits, the Museum of Television and Radio (formerly Museum of Broadcasting) has more than 120,000 television and radio programs available in the library. During each visit, viewers can select and watch television shows at an individual console. There's also a branch in LA.

10. This elite museum on the Upper East Side has an interesting admission policy: visitors must be at least ten years old, and those under sixteen must be accompanied by an adult.

Answer: The Frick Museum

The Frick's strict no-children rule is supposedly because "few ropes or cases are used to guard fragile objects." Of course, they also mention the wish to preserve the "ambiance" of Henry Clay Frick's mansion (the museum is housed in the late Mr. Frick's private house, which was completed five years before his death). Admission is $15, though between 11 and 1 on Sundays admission is "pay-as-you-wish."

The other 3 choices (NY Hall of Science, Mount Vernon Hotel Museum, and the Museum of Natural History) are all suitable for kids.
