Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you make your way south down Interstate 5 and through California, you'll eventually reach the United States border and what city connecting to Tijuana, Mexico?

Answer: San Diego

Interstate 5 actually starts at the border, so if you're heading south to Tijuana, you'll notice that your mile markers will be heading backwards the further you go. Connecting to Mexican Federal Highway 1, Interstate 5 weaves its way up through San Diego, Encitas, Carlsbad, Orange County, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Shasta before stretching up to Portland, Seattle, and Highway 99 in Canada.

In essence, you could head up or down through the country without leaving the Interstate and hit all three countries.

The only major Californian city you probably won't hit on the I-5 is San Francisco, but you can connect to the I-80 and head west at the appropriate exit to make your way there.
2. Make your way south from Gardiner, Montana on United States Highway 89 and you'll reach the North Entrance of what National Park?

Answer: Yellowstone National Park

Though Highway 89 starts at the Canadian border (which links it to the Albertan highway system and reaches most cities in the province), it continues south through Montana before terminating at the entrance of Yellowstone, the first National Park in the United States. The park itself contains several routes, none of which are highways, before resuming at the south entrance and continuing southward all the way to Flagstaff, Arizona. On the way, it passes through Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah as well.

"National Geographic" once cited this highway as one of the best for drivers in the world, partly because of its passage through numerous majestic landscapes. Besides Yellowstone, it also takes riders by Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Teton, Glacier National Park, and the Grand Canyon.
3. If you're driving east on Interstate H-1, you'll be making your way down a bit of an anomaly, driving on the only Interstate to pass through what United States capital?

Answer: Honolulu

Seems a bit weird, eh? Having INTERstates on a non-contiguous state? Hawaii actually has a few of them, all of which are on the Big Island connecting Hawaiian cities to some of the largest regions therein. H-1 stretches from Kapolei and the Farrington Highway (Route 93) to the west to the far end of Honolulu, the state capital, where it becomes the Kalanianaole Highway (Route 72). Also known as the Queen Liliʻuokalani Freeway, it has the distinction of being both the southernmost and westernmost Interstate in the southernmost and westernmost U.S. state.
4. If you head eastward from California on Interstate 10, you'll make your way across the United States in almost its entirety. It terminates in what Florida city?

Answer: Jacksonville

One of the U.S.'s longest Interstate Highways, Interstate 10 is the southernmost east-west thoroughfare, cutting across eight states and connecting to several of the country's most prominent north-south Interstates along the way. You can get on Interstate 10 in Santa Monica, California, right near the Pacific Coast, and theoretically follow it all the way to the edge of Jacksonville, nearly 2,500 miles away. in Jacksonville, the road is known as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway.
5. Interstate 90 is the longest freeway in the United States, but which way would you be travelling if you were going from Buffalo, WY to Buffalo, NY?

Answer: East

Ah yes, the classic Buffalo-Buffalo trip-- you know the one-- which sends you from the Bighorn Mountain city of Buffalo in Wyoming to the Lake Erie city of Buffalo. But would you believe it? This trip would only take you across about one thousand six hundred miles of the I-90 (and twenty-four hours, if you're obeying the speed limit), about half of the actual distance of this, the longest Interstate in the United States.

In reality, the freeway takes you all the way from Seattle, Washington to Boston, Massachusetts.
6. You can cross the United States from bottom to top if you start at the Gulf of Mexico and make your way north on the I-65. You'll end up reaching what Great Lake?

Answer: Michigan

Interstate 65 takes you from the far south in Mobile, Alabama all the way up to the Rust Belt city of Gary, Indiana, a short way over the Illinois-Indiana border from Chicago, and only a stone's throw away from the Great Lakes. This drive is...well...a bit dull; driving up to the west of the Appalachians it's notably flat and filled with rural expanses. That being said, it's one of the quickest north-south routes in the country, taking you from south coast to northern border in under nine hundred miles.

It only passes through four states.
7. The United States has hundreds of highways, but if you take Highway 1, the Overseas Highway, you'll be making your way through what state?

Answer: Florida

The Overseas Highway, partially built on the Overseas Railway, brings drivers from Key West to Key Largo before continuing up through the State of Florida to Folkston, Georgia (passing through Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Jacksonville).

It's a scenic route when the weather's right if only because it follows not only through the sunny coast, but over the water along Seven Mile Bridge and the Lower Florida Keys as one of the area's only main thoroughfares. It also cuts along the Everglades.
8. United States Route 6 cuts its way through what specific region on its way to Provincetown?

Answer: Cape Cod

Just like U.S. Route 1 in the Florida Keys, U.S. Route 6 is the main line of transport connecting the Massachusetts towns of Provincetown, Truro, Yarmouth, and Barnstable to the mainland. U.S. Route 6 also weaves its way through the state to reach Providence, Rhode Island before continuing all the way to California.

The part of the highway, also known as the Mid-Cape Highway, generally sees heavy use from shipping (due to the region's massive fishing industry) and tourism.
9. Head east along Interstate 70 and you'll inevitably make your way through what engineering marvel, the highest point on the United States Interstate System?

Answer: Eisenhower Tunnel

Starting in Utah and cutting east across the central states to reach Baltimore, Maryland, Interstate 70 is noteworthy if only because it passes through the Colorado Rockies. Travelling along this route means you'll pass through Eisenhower Tunnel, the highest point on any Interstate at an altitude of more than two miles above sea level. Named after the President who instituted the Interstate system, the tunnel passes underground for a mile and a half across the Continental Divide leaving it...well...undivided by roadways at the very least.
10. You're making your way south through Detroit on the I-375 for about a mile or so before you realize that this United States roadway has what distinction?

Answer: It's one of the shortest in the country

At 1.06 miles, Interstate 375 is found entirely within the city of Detroit, Michigan's downtown area, connecting to the I-75 in the north, weaving around Greektown, and completing its trail around the city before stopping at Jefferson Avenue and the Renaissance Center. Built in 1964, it was made to better suit the needs of the growing Motor City...though that never really panned out as well as the city (and the United States) hoped. Since it was built, I-375 was beaten by other Interstates as the smallest in the nation-- by the I-110 in Texas, the I-315 in Montana, and the 0.70 mile I-878 in New York.
