The Phantom of the Opera Trivia Questions

Answer: Arthur Lubin

Browning directed "Dracula", Freund directed "The Mummy", and Whale directed "Frankenstein", "The Invisible Man" and "The Bride of Frankenstein". This was the only Universal horror film that Lubin directed.

Answer: Buquet

This takes place in the song "The Magical Lasso". It is where Buquet is trying to scare the ballerinas. He is singing about the Phantom, telling the dancers what the Phantom looks like. The dancers seem to be enjoying the story until Madame Giry stops it and confronts Buquet.

Answer: "Miss Daae has returned."

Madame Giry says this right after the song where they all get notes from O.G. (Opera Ghost). Andre and Firmin sing most of the song. They are both disgusted about the Opera Ghost demanding a salary. Raoul, Carlotta and Piangi also sing in the song. Carlotta and Raoul have notes of their own, and Madame Giry has one as well. We don't know when Christine returns, only that when she does, she's resting. Carlotta and Piangi were the most interested in Christine's return because they needed to know if she was going to sing in the opera that night.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is the creator of all the music from "The Phantom of the Opera". Andrew Lloyd Webber is a famous composer and has written many songs for Broadway plays such as "Cats."

Answer: He'd left to give her time to change and to get his hat.

Christine tried to tell him that she couldn't go to supper with him, but Raoul persisted. He left and while he was gone, a hand (we later find out it was the Phantom) locked the door and took away the key. Raoul came back after fetching his hat, but the door was locked.

The actual quote is, 'Grovel. Grovel, grovel, grovel.' Lefevre does suggest that Carlotta be persuaded to sing the aria for them, but also tells them that he's headed for Australia. Andre and Firmin grovel, to Carlotta's satisfaction, and she begins to sing the aria. However the Phantom causes a backdrop to fall on her, which angers her to the point that she really does leave.

Answer: Madame Giry

Most newspapers and online sites list her as Meg, but the "Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom Companion" book, the authorized Andrew Lloyd Webber's movie companion, notes her as THE Madame Giry. It notes that while she is "15 years older than Raoul, he has not aged as well as the once ballerina".

Answer: switches her atomizer bottle

Carlotta used an atomizer bottle to keep her throat moist. The Phantom, knowing this, switched her bottle. After he caused a commotion and they had to restart "Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh," Carlotta sprays her throat with the tampered bottle. When she tries singing, she begins to croak.

In the musical, it isn't really explained how she croaks, although it is generally assumed the Phantom uses ventriloquism. The problem with ventriloquism is that the Phantom is also shouting at the same time Carlotta is croaking - an impossible feat!

Answer: Wandering Child

Raoul raced after Christine and the Phantom as they went to Christine's father's grave. When he saw that the Phantom was trying to get Christine to come to him by opening her father's crypt, he drew his sword and the fight ensured. Raoul won and was about to kill the Phantom, but Christine stopped him. Too bad, had Raoul killed the Phantom at that point, Piangi would still have lived.

"For the past three years these things do happen, and until you stop these things from happening, this thing does not happen!" Carlotta says this as she angrily walks away.

I always found this to be very interesting. Why the people at Universal decided to change Christine's name is beyond me. After all, that is the name that was given to her by the author Gaston Leroux.

If you have seen this movie, isn't it kind of weird that he would have his own daughter do some of those scenes!!!

Christine sings this once she wakes up after "Music of the Night". The Phantom's monkey music box wakes her up. She is singing this trying to remember if she really saw the Phantom or if it was a dream. She gets her answer when she wakes up and sees the Phantom and sings this right before she takes off his mask, causing him to knock her down and yell at her. ("I Remember/Stranger than You Dreamt It")
This is one of my favorite scenes because you really see the Phantom's insecurity!

Meg sings with the chorus. "Track down this murderer! He must be found!". Christine sings her anger (at first) towards the Phantom. "I gave you my mind, blindly." Madame Giry sings a warning to Raoul. "Your hands at the level of your eyes." The Phantom sings the choice Christine has to make. "So do you end your days with me, or do you send him to his grave?"

Answer: Swedish

When Mme Giry was leading the two new managers around the ballet, they started to enquire about the ballerinas. They asked about Meg first, and then Christine. Mme Giry told them who she was. Andre then asked if she was any relation to the Swedish violinist, to which she replied, 'His only child.'

Answer: The Phantom didn't close the mirror completely after taking Christine.

Meg had gone into the dressing room looking for Christine. The dressing room was dark, but she happened to see that the mirror was slid open slightly. Meg pushed it open a bit more, and walked through it into the tunnel that was filled with rats and cobwebs (not at all how it appeared through Christine's eyes). But unfortunately for Meg, her mother caught her in the tunnel and took her out before she could explore further.

Answer: a black poodle

A petulant Carlotta sits brushing her hair as Andre and Firmin offer her many different gifts, while singing 'Prima Donna'. She turns her nose up at most of the offerings but does seem pleased with the fur muff, and the diamond necklace and earring set. However her face lights up completely when Firmin holds out a black poodle to her. She already has a white poodle.

Answer: The power of the music of the night

After the success of "Hannibal", Christine is left alone in her dressing room. Here the Phantom reveals himself to her for the first time when he appears in her mirror. He proceeds to lead her down to the great underground lake where he lives. Once they are there, the Phantom begins his song "The Music of the Night" in which he describes both his passion for music and Christine.

At first, I couldn't tell who this was, I thought it was a random woman because of the longer hair, but Raoul was keeping watch over Christine. Unfortunately, he had fallen asleep in his chair and didn't see Christine when she left for the stables. He woke up a little late and had to push his horse to try and catch Christine and the Phantom at the graveyard.

Answer: Minnie Driver

Margaret Preece sang the role of Carlotta, although Minnie Driver did contribute the song played during the end credits of the movie. Ms. Preece played the role of Carlotta in the London production of the show.

After Christine sings, "Think of Me" as Elissa in "Hannibal", the Phantom commends her and sends her a rose with a black ribbon tied around it.

Andre and Firmin, the new owners of the Paris Opera House, think they are going crazy when notes signed "O. G." (Opera Ghost) start showing up everywhere telling them how to run the Opera and demanding money.

Claudin had been working for 2 years on this concerto, music that was built around the lullaby from his home province.

In my opinion, Julian Sands is extremely cute, but kind of freaky in this movie. Very gothic, but the face takes away some of the mystery that is so prominent in the other versions of Phantom.
