Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Country music legend George Jones was married for about six years to another famous country artist. Who was this lady, known for standing by her man?

Answer: Tammy Wynette

Tammy Wynette was already a successful performer when she met George Jones, who was 11 years her senior. In 1968, Wynette and Jones divorced their respective spouses (Don Chapel and Shirley Corley), and got married the following year. Sadly, Jones was dealing with severe alcohol problems, and at one point spent 10 days in a padded cell after a drinking spree. Though the couple had a daughter, Tamala Georgette, in 1970, and often toured together, Jones's drinking and erratic behaviour eventually led to the end of their marriage. Wynette and Jones divorced in 1975, but continued to record together for years.

In spite of his alcohol-related health issues, Jones survived Wynette (who died in 1998 at the age of 55 after years of dealing with medical problems) by 15 years, dying in 2013 at the age of 81. "Stand by Your Man" (1968) is Wynette's best-known song.

4. No, she wasn't drunk, she didn't regret taking the plunge into marriage, and she wasn't a bad apple. Seeking attention and fame, what entertaining stunt did Annie Edson Taylor become the first to perform on October 24, 1901?

Answer: Go over Niagara Falls in a barrel

Annie Edson Taylor was an American teacher who fell on hard times when her husband died in the United States Civil War. She was living in Bay City, Michigan, and strapped for cash, so she decided that going over Niagara Falls in a barrel, a feat that hadn't been successfully performed yet, would be an excellent way to achieve fame (or, perhaps the correct word is notoriety, depending on your perspective). On her 63rd birthday, Annie Taylor strapped herself into a tested reinforced barrel and went over the falls.

She was fished out of the water some 20 minutes later, alive but bruised. This stunt prompted others to attempt the feat; about a third of the attempters died in the plunge. Regardless of the outcome, going over Niagara Falls is illegal and you face stiff penalties no matter what side of the border you come out on.

5. Which American crooner turned down the role of 'Columbo' in an NBC movie in 1968 because he felt it would interfere with his golf?

Answer: Bing Crosby

Lee J. Cobb and Bing Crosby were NBC's choices for the role. Cobb could not fit it into his busy schedule and Crosby declined as he felt it would interfere with his golf. He was also semi-retired by then. Crosby was an extremely competent golfer who got his handicap down to 2. Bob Hope was also a keen golfer, with a handicap of 4, but was never considered for the role of 'Columbo' and was also Anglo-American, having been born in London. Julio Iglesias is Spanish and neither he nor Elvis is known as a golfer.

He was cut from the CFL and became a professional wrestler, instead. His ring name was "the Rock." He presented and hosted "The Titan Games" on NBC TV, beginning in 2019.

8. Which Beatle earned fame among the very young in the 1990s as the first narrator of "Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends"?

Answer: Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr, whose real name is Richard Starkey, was storyteller for the first two seasons of "Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends". This is a children's TV series based "The Railway Series" of books by the Reverend W. V. Awdry. Thomas and his friends - talking trains and other vehicles, along with an assortment of humans - all live on the fantasy "Island of Sodor".

Their stories have gained worldwide popularity with little boys (and girls) and their parents.

9. Well known actress, Nicole Kidman, has enjoyed much success in a wide range of film roles. It would seem she is rather fearless in her approach to life yet she admits one fear to which most of us would respond, "Huh?" What causes Nicole's goose bumps?

Answer: Butterflies

Clinically her fear would be called lepidopterophobia. Nicole Kidman admits her fear of butterflies (and, for the most part, moths, too) began when she was very young. She expresses her fear as not one that the animal(s) would bite her or sting her. She describes it more as not wanting one of the furry, winged creatures to touch her skin.

10. Whom did humorist Dave Barry call "a guy who was the Number 1 non-musical act in the world. He could have easily kept that going till today. But he's a restless guy."?

Answer: Steve Martin

The other choices are all musical acts: Bob Dylan of course, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the legendary guitarist, and Andrea Bocelli the blind opera star. Dave Barry met Steve Martin back in 2002 after Steve Martin contacted him to help him write jokes for the next Academy Awards ceremony that Mr. Martin would be hosting. Dave Barry joined him with a team of writers including comedienne Rita Rudner, Hollywood fixture Bruce Vilanch and about half a dozen other comedy writers. Ironically a few years later Steve Martin started taking his bluegrass music act on tour, and did indeed become a musical act as well as a non-musical act. And Dave Barry interviewed Steve during his banjo-playing tour.
