Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The modern spirit board was patented in 1891 and was sometimes known as the "Egyptian Luck Board". What is the more popular name for it?

Answer: Ouija board

The Ouija board was invented as a toy in 1891 by Elijah J. Bond as a "Ouija or Egyptian luck-board". The Kennard Novelty Company put the board into production and registered "Ouija" as a trademark. It was very popular in the 1920s and 30s and several psychics and mediums claimed to channel the writings of dead authors through it.

2. Which kind of hammer would one use to remove a bent or otherwise unwanted nail?

Answer: Claw hammer

If one owns a hammer, it's probably a claw hammer. The claw side is somewhat useful for pulling unwanted nails out of lumber. A ball peen hammer was historically used for shaping (peening) metal, but is now more often used for fine chisel and punch work. A jackhammer *might* be used to remove a nail, but it would make a mess!

Jan Hammer is a Czech composer and performer who wrote the theme for the television show, "Miami Vice" so I hope you didn't pick that answer.

3. "I'd rather have a pawn than a finger." - "It depends on which pawn and which finger." To which game are these well-known quotes referring?

Answer: chess

Naturally, the stakes as depicted in these quotes demonstrates a commitment to the game of chess which exceeds that of most players. Nevertheless, they are humorous. Reuben Fine was a grandmaster and later became a professor of psychology. Roman Dzindzichashvili, author of the second quote was also a renowned grandmaster.

They both were U.S. Open Champions.

4. What type of cherry is traditionally used in the filling of a Black Forest gateau?

Answer: Black cherry

The Black Forest gateau, or 'Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte' in German, is not actually named after the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). Rather, it's named after the cherry liquor used in the recipe, or 'Schwarzwälder Kirsch', a type of cherry liquor. Black cherries (Prunus serotina) are the traditional filling, along with cream.

5. Duality is perhaps universal, entering into things as common as your daily beverage! The name of which coffee variety is synonymous with a port located in Yemen?

Answer: Mocha

Yes, all these are coffee varieties but only Mocha is true to the description. Mocha is a port that served as a major export outlet for Yemeni coffee of the same name. Bourbon is associated with Bourbon Island in the Indian Ocean where the French first planted it. Espresso and Cappuccino owe their nomenclature to their preparation procedures.

7. What is unusual about the common medlar, a fruit that is only recently being reintroduced to man?

Answer: It can only be eaten when rotten

Mespilus germanica is the botanical name for the common medlar fruit, which is known to have been eaten by man since at least the days of early Rome. This tree produced its fruit in winter, which made it very handy during the times most other fruit trees were dormant. If eaten ripe it can give consumers a real stomach ache, so for thousands of years was consumed only when rotten - which gave it a not unpleasant taste.

After disappearing from the kitchen for very many years, the medlar has recently been reintroduced. One of its various common names, some quite vulgar, is monkey's bottom.

8. Food can be very colourful. As we know, strawberries are red and carrots are orange, but what unusual colour is the Japanese horseradish condiment called wasabi?

Answer: green

Wasabi comes from the grated roots of Wasabia Japonica, commonly called Japanese horseradish. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family which includes cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower and also the more common horseradish, Armoracia rusticana, although it is not actually the same plant. To prepare, the roots of the wasabi are finely grated and made into a paste.

It is a very hot condiment similar to a strong mustard, and is green in colour. It is sometimes used in the preparation of sushi, and can also make an attractive and tasty addition to any dish.
