Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After almost 60 years, the UK album charts got its 1,000 Number One in November 2013. Who recorded "Swings Both Ways"?

Answer: Robbie Williams

Before "Swings Both Ways", Robbie Williams had seven other Number One albums in the UK. Two 'greatest hits' albums also hit the top of the charts. In the same period he had seven Number One singles, one - "Somethin' Stupid" - a duo with Nicole Kidman in 2001.
2. The UK album charts were first compiled in 1956. With an album called "Songs For Swingin' Lovers!", which American superstar recorded that first UK chart topper?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

"Songs for Swingin' Lovers!" reached Number Two in the USA. In a recording career that lasted from 1946 to 1993, Sinatra had five US and three UK Number One albums.
3. Between May 5th 1963 and April 25th 1965, the top of the UK album charts was dominated by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Who was the only artist to break into that run?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The run went: Beatles, Beatles, Stones, Beatles, Beatles, Stones, Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Stones, Beatles. (Then Dylan, Dylan, "The Sound of Music" soundtrack...)
"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" was the Dylan cuckoo in the Brit nest. Almost surprisingly, Dylan had six UK Number One albums before hitting the top of the US charts with "Planet Waves" in 1974. He went on to have four more US Number One hits in the period this quiz refers to (1956 to 2013).
4. Of the first 1,000 albums to top the UK charts, one group took that title on 15 occasions. Who were they?

Answer: The Beatles

I am not going to list them all, but the first eight albums The Beatles released all hit the top of the UK charts. They also had 15 US Number One hits. (References are to studio albums only, not compilations). The Rolling Stones had eleven Number One albums.
5. The UK album charts were first compiled in 1956. By the time the 1,000th Number One had been achieved in November 2013, which of the previous 999 had been the best seller?

Answer: Queen's Greatest Hits

It sold six million copies. Queen had seven other UK Number One studio albums.
"Live at Treorchy" by the former coalminer turned folksinger Max Boyce was the first comedy album to top the UK charts (in 1974). "Hello!" was the first of four Number One albums for 'the Quo'.
6. Between 1970 and 1995, a British band had five recordings that topped the UK album charts. They also had the biggest-selling album never to reach the top. Who were they and what was that one called?

Answer: Pink Floyd, "Dark Side of the Moon"

"The Dark Side of the Moon" reached Number Two in the UK and Number One in the US in 1973. In 2011, it was listed as having spent 1,000 weeks in the Billboard charts.
There are no extra points for knowing that the release that kept "Dark Side" off the top spot was "K-tel's "20 Flash Back Greats From The Sixties" by "Various Artists".
(A subsequent change to the rules banned 'various artists' albums from the charts).
7. Which group topped the UK album charts nine times in 47 years, with four of those being 'Greatest Hits' releases?

Answer: ABBA

The super Swedes first hit the top of the UK charts with "Arrival" in 1976. It was their fourth LP. Their next eight also topped the UK charts. "The Album", 1974, was the best appearance in the US charts, reaching Number 14.
Queen and Bruce Springsteen also had nine Number Albums in this time. Madonna had twelve, Elvis Presley eleven, Robbie Williams eleven, The Rolling Stones eleven, U2 ten and David Bowie ten.
8. Who was the first British singer ever to record a UK Number One album?

Answer: Tommy Steele

"The Tommy Steele Story" hit the top of the charts in 1957.
9. Which made-for-TV group topped the UK album charts for three months in the late 1960s and then saw their second follow it to the top within a few weeks?

Answer: The Monkees

The eponymous "The Monkees" topped the charts for seven weeks from 29th 1967. "The Sound Of Music" soundtrack was Number One for seven weeks from March 19th, and on May 7th "More of the Monkees" took over.
10. Happy Talk: Among the first 1,000 UK Number One albums, a movie soundtrack spent an entire year at the top. Which of these was it?

Answer: South Pacific

The soundtrack had 70 consecutive weeks at Number One, including all of 1959, and an aggregate of 115 in all. It was also a US Number One. "The King And I" topped the UK charts on and off for 58 weeks in 1956 and 1957.
