Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song made number one on the countdown?

Answer: Powderfinger - "These Days"

In 1999 "These Days" became the first song to top the countdown which wasn't released as a single. Despite this, it became one of Powderfinger's most popular songs, winning the award for Song of the Year at the Music Critic's Awards.
2. Which song topped the other end of the countdown, making number 100?

Answer: Powderfinger - "Passenger"

Powderfinger managed the odd distinction of being the first artist to reach number one and number 100 in the same year. Ironically, due to "These Days" not being released as a single, "Passenger" was more successful, peaking at number 30 in the ARIA Singles charts.
3. How many entries did the artist with the number one entry receive?

Answer: Four

Powderfinger managed to be an all-rounder in 1999, with songs appearing all over the countdown. These were "These Days" at number one, "Already Gone" at number 25, "Good-Day Ray" at number 68, and "Passenger" at number 100.
4. Which of these artists received the most entries in the countdown?

Answer: Silverchair

In addition to Powderfinger achieving four entries, Silverchair also achieved four entries. These entries were "Ana's Song (Open Fire)", "Anthem for the Year 2000", "Miss You Love", and "Emotion Sickness". All four of these songs were in the top 50.
5. What country was fully represented in the bottom five of the top ten?

Answer: America

While no American artist could crack the top five, they managed the next eight entries after that. This included entries from The Bloodhound Gang, Rage Against the Machine, Limp Bizkit, Pearl Jam, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
6. What was unique about the entries at numbers two and three?

Answer: They were both by former Triple J Unearthed winners

Killing Heidi made number two in the 1999 countdown, having won an Unearthed competition in 1996. They became the first Unearthed band to reach number two, a feat which was emulated twice in ten years afterward. The Tenants made number three in the countdown, having won an Unearthed competition in 1998.
7. Did any artist receive consecutive entries in the countdown?

Answer: Yes

Silverchair achieved this with "Anthem for the Year 2000" and "Miss You Love" making numbers 29 and 30 respectively. Additionally, Korn also had consecutive entries, with "Freak on a Leash" and "Falling Away From Me" making number 16 and 17 respectively.
8. Which of the following artists achieved two top 20 entries?

Answer: Killing Heidi

Killing Heidi was one of two artists to achieve two top 20 entries. In addition to "Weir" making number two, they also reached number 14 with "Mascara". The other artist to achieve two top 20 entries was Korn.
9. How many entries in the countdown were by Australian artists?

Answer: 52

1999 saw a new record for Australian entries in the countdown, with 52. This was aided by the fact that the top three songs were all by Australian artists. There were also five Australian bands with three or more entries in the countdown.
10. Which of these countries was not represented in the countdown?

Answer: France

Although French artists regularly contribute to the countdown, they couldn't manage it in 1999.
The only Canadian entry was The Tea Party - "Heaven Coming Down".
The only German entry was Rammstein - "Stripped".
The only Jamaican entry was Bob Marley - "Sun is Shining", as remixed by Funkstar De Luxe.
