Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song received the most votes, taking the top spot on the countdown?

Answer: Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Nirvana took the number one spot from Joy Division, who had held it for the previous two years. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was very successful, reaching number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart.
2. Which song sat at the bottom of the list, finishing at number 100?

Answer: Prince - "Cream"

Even though Prince made the top 50 of the last two countdowns with "Kiss" and "Sign o' the Times", he could only just scrape into the 1991 list, with "Cream" at number 100.
The Pixies - "Monkey Gone to Heaven" made number 91.
Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here" made number 58.
Public Enemy - "Bring the Noise" made number 92.
3. The Cure dominated the countdown with numerous entries. Which song did they bring all the way to the top ten?

Answer: A Forest

The Cure managed a total of nine entries, with seven songs in the top 50. "A Forest" was their highest, reaching number eight. "Just Like Heaven" missed out on the top ten, making number 11.
4. Which artist received the second most entries, with five?

Answer: R.E.M.

Even though they didn't have the most entries, R.E.M. still managed a great effort in 1991. The five entries were "It's the End of the World as We Know it (And I Feel Fine)", "Losing My Religion", "The One I Love", "Orange Crush", and "Fall on Me" at numbers 12, 32, 40, 62, and 65 respectively.
5. Did any artist receive consecutive entries? (Example: 34 & 35)

Answer: Yes

Among their numerous entries, The Cure managed this with "Boys Don't Cry" and "Lullaby" making numbers 43 and 44 respectively. They just missed out on repeating it further up the chart, with "Primary" and "Close to Me" making numbers 35 and 37.
6. Which artist managed two entries in the top five?

Answer: Nirvana

Nirvana not only managed to take the top spot with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but they also made number three with "Lithium". If the countdown was limited to songs from the past year, they would have made numbers one and two.
7. What was the highest entry by an Australian artist?

Answer: Hunters & Collectors - "Throw Your Arms Around Me"

For the third year in a row, Hunters & Collectors were the only Australian band to make the top ten. "Throw Your Arms Around Me" only managed to make number four though, after making number two in the previous countdowns.
8. Which band made the top ten with two songs in the 1998 countdown of all time, despite failing to make the top 50 in 1991 with the same songs?

Answer: Metallica

In 1991, Metallica made numbers 60 and 89 with "Enter Sandman" and "One". Seven years later, the same two songs made numbers nine and seven. Ironically, Pearl Jam also made the top ten with two songs in 1998, but failed to register in 1991 when both songs were released.
9. Which country had the most entries in the countdown?

Answer: United Kingdom

The United Kingdom continued to show dominance, making up 42 of the songs on the list. This included five songs in the top ten.
33 of the songs on the list were by American artists.
21 of the songs on the list were by Australian artists.
3 of the songs on the list were by Irish artists.
10. Which song made the top ten in 1991, despite not even making the top 40 in the previous year's countdown?

Answer: Violent Femmes - "Blister in the Sun"

Many songs from the last countdown moved up and down the list. "Blister in the Sun" first made number 46 in 1989. One year later, it moved up to number 41. It made its most dramatic jump in 1991, when it moved all the way up to number nine. On the other side, The B-52's - "Rock Lobster" made number eight in 1990, but fell all the way down to number 77 in 1991.
