Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song finished at the top of the list?

Answer: Spiderbait - "Buy Me a Pony"

"Buy Me a Pony" was the very first Australian song to reach the top. This was further complimented when four of the next five songs to reach number one were also Australian. It is also one of the shortest songs to reach the top, lasting for just one minute and 45 seconds.
2. Which song finished at the bottom of the list, making number 100?

Answer: Ben Harper - "Gold to Me"

Despite the fact that Ben Harper has made the top 20 on another occasion, he could only just scrape into the 1996 countdown, with "Gold to Me" being his only entry.
Frenzal Rhomb - "Punch in the Face" made number 72.
OMC - "How Bizarre" made number 78.
You Am I - "Soldiers" made number 80.

Answer: Primitive Radio Gods

Primitive Radio Gods only had one entry in the countdown, with "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand" making number 36.
Powderfinger had entries at numbers six, 18, and 32.
The Smashing Pumpkins had entries at numbers 13, 28, and 55.
Pearl Jam had entries at numbers 47, 90, and 94.
The only other artist to receive three entries was Bush, with entries at numbers five, 19, and 38.
4. Which artist had the highest entry by a song which wasn't their highest in the countdown?

Answer: The Prodigy

The Prodigy proved they weren't one-hit wonders when they scored two top 20 entries in the countdown. Their highest entry was "Breathe" which made number seven. Their other entry was "Firestarter" which made number 17.
5. Which of these artists did not make the top five?

Answer: Bad Religion

There were three consecutive artists beginning with B in the top five. Ben Folds Five made number three with "Underground", Butthole Surfers made number four with "Pepper", and Bush made number five with "Glycerine". Bad Religion's only entry into the countdown was "Punk Rock Song" at number 63.
6. A cover of which highly successful song from a previous countdown made the list?

Answer: Creep

The cover of "Creep" performed by Australian singer Frank Bennett made number 95 in the countdown, three years after Radiohead brought it to number two. All of the other songs listed have been covered before and have made the top two in a previous countdown.
7. How many entries in the countdown were by Australian artists?

Answer: 29

As with many of the earlier countdowns, Australian artists were not greatly represented, with the majority of entries coming from the United Kingdom and the United States. This slowly began to change with the next 12 countdowns all featuring more than 30 Australian entries.
8. Which of these non-English speaking countries was not represented in the countdown?

Answer: Greece

While Sweden and Iceland are common in the countdown, 1996 saw a rare entry from Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo, who made number 64 with "Wombo Lombo". The only Swedish entry was "Woman" by Neneh Cherry at number 86, while the only Icelandic entry was "Hyperballad" by Björk at number 53.
9. Which of these appeared as a pair, in consecutive songs?

Answer: Eye(s)

Near the bottom of the list there was a pair of eyes. "Shut My Eyes" by The Superjesus made number 81, and "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson made number 82.
10. Which of these four-letter artists had the highest entry?

Answer: Tool

1996 was a year for artists with short names, with the countdown featuring 19 songs by artists of four letters or less. Tool had the highest entry of all of them, with "Stinkfist" making number two.
