Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fill in the missing words from Psalm 61:4. "I long to dwell in your ___ forever and take refuge in the shelter of ___ ___" (NIV).

Answer: tent, your wings

I love reading Psalms about God's protection. I particularly love the imagery of the almighty God being like a bird under whose wings I can shelter. It makes me feel very safe and peaceful and reminds me that I don't have to carry the burdens of life all by myself.
2. Which part of himself did God say that Moses would see when God's glory passed by Moses?

Answer: His back

In Exodus 33, Moses had been having a conversation with God about his leadership of the Israelite people. Moses wanted to be assured of God's presence, and then in verse 18 he actually asked God to show him his glory. The Lord's reply was that nobody could see his face and live but that he was prepared for Moses to see his back. How amazing for Moses and what courage that must have given him to continue leading the Israelites on their journey through the desert.
3. In 2 Corinthians 10, what does Paul say should be taken captive and made obedient to Christ (NIV)?

Answer: Every thought

I found this verse (2 Corinthians 10:5) particularly challenging recently. It reminded me that when thoughts pop into my head (especially ones that can lead me into a negative or stressful thought pattern) I actually have a choice as to what I do with those thoughts! I don't have to follow them up but I can just grab them and throw them out of my mind. Sounds so simple doesn't it...?
4. Complete the beatitude from Matthew 5. "Blessed are the poor in spirit ..." (NIV)

Answer: ... for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

The beatitudes are taken from the beginning of what is known as Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount". Jesus spent time teaching about all kinds of practical issues of life. Many of the things that he said are very challenging as they call for his disciples to go the extra mile and look for higher standards in their lives than the Jewish law required. The sermon can be found in Matthew 5-7.

The beatitudes at the beginning, however, are promises of hope and blessing. Out of the wrong answers, only one is a promise given in the beatitudes: the pure in heart will see God.
5. Psalm 60:4 talks about God unfurling a banner to help his people gain victory over their enemies. What is the Hebrew name of God that means "God is my banner"?

Answer: Jehovah Nisi

As somebody who has studied and has an interest in languages, I love hearing the names of God expressed in Hebrew. Somehow it makes them seem more meaningful!

There are several different names of God that appear in this way in the Old Testament. The correct answer to this question is Jehovah Nisi - the Lord my banner. Jehovah Rapha means the Lord my healer, Jehovah Rohi is the Lord my shepherd and my personal favourite, Jehovah Shamma (the Lord who is there).

Others are Jehovah Jireh (the Lord my provider) and Jehovah Shalom (the Lord my peace). I find that all these wonderful names are a great source for meditation on God.
6. What does Jeremiah describe as his "joy and heart's delight" (NIV) in Jeremiah 15:16?

Answer: God's words

If you know anything about Jeremiah, you will know that he had a pretty rough time as a prophet. He was persecuted, put in the stocks and put in a cistern because he refused to say what the people wanted to hear, persisting instead in saying what God was telling him to. The only reason for him to go through all this had to be that God's words were his heart's delight!
7. In Revelation 7, where is it said that the Lamb will lead those who have come through the great tribulation?

Answer: To springs of living water

These people have gone through terrible times of suffering and persecution because they have persisted in their love for God and refused to give up their faith. What a wonderful reward that, after all that, the Lamb (Jesus) will lead them to springs of living water (Revelation 7:17).

This sounds like a wonderful place of peace, refreshment, healing and cleansing after all the turmoil that they have been through.
8. Paul says that he lives by what in Galatians 2:20? (NIV)

Answer: Faith in the Son of God

Paul has been talking to the Galatians about the Jewish law. He is telling them that now the pursuit of observing the law is not the means of finding justification from God. He states that he has died to the law in order that he may live for God. He is no longer living for himself, or by himself, but by his faith in the Son of God, whose love took him to his death on the cross.

It is that faith that helps Paul to live the way that he believes that God wants him to.
9. What were the Israelites instructed to do on the seventh day of the week? (See Exodus 34:21.)

Answer: Rest

I have come across this verse at a very busy time in my life and it keeps coming back to challenge me! God told the Israelites that they were to work for six days and then rest on the seventh. This sounds like very good advice, of course. The challenge comes in that God told them that they were to do this even during the ploughing season and harvest, i.e. the busiest times of the year.

As someone who has tendencies towards being a workaholic, this is a hard one to put into practice. But if I know what's good for me...
10. Fill in the blank from Psalm 65 (NIV). "____ awaits you, O God, in Zion."

Answer: Praise

I found this Psalm very uplifting when I read it recently. It was a song written by David, declaring how God had helped him by answering his prayers in an awesome way, and also how God is at work in nature. This first verse struck me particularly, though. David was basically saying to God that he (David) couldn't wait to praise him and that God had only to show up for the praise to begin!
