Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the book of Revelation, we see a foreshadowing of future events as seen through the record of John. We also see many things that have already transpired throughout the history of mankind. John foretells that something is used for the healing of the nations in his prophecy concerning the New Jerusalem. What is designed for this purpose?

Answer: the leaves of the tree of life

All of these are mentioned in chapters 21 & 22, but specifically, the leaves of the tree of life are stated as being reserved for this purpose. (Revelation 22:2)
2. There are many instances of slavery and servitude mentioned throughout the Bible. God instructed Moses that when a Hebrew purchased another Hebrew to be their servant, they were to allow the servant to go free after how long?

Answer: 6 years

The Hebrew/Jewish people were enslaved in many situations. The Egyptians, the Assyrians, the Syrians, and others captured them and enslaved them many times, usually as a punishment for disobeying God. This instance of servitude is found in Exodus 21: 1-6.

(If the servant chose not to be released from his fellow Hebrew master, then the master was under instructions to take him to the judges and then to the door or doorpost and pierce through his ear with an awl, signifying permanent ownership.)
3. How many books of the New Testament are traditionally attributed to Luke, and to which specific individual did he address them?

Answer: Two; Theophilus

Luke wrote the books of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Theophilus was an acquaintance of Luke, and as a Greek, was curious as to the history of the earth walk of Jesus. Luke reports the events, not as an eyewitness to the events, but much as a reporter might do today, by interviewing and speaking with those who were.

He traveled with the apostle Paul at times. (Luke 1:3&4 and Acts 1:1)
4. Which of the following is NOT a book found in the New Testament?

Answer: The Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas is one of the Gnostic writings, not found in the Holy Bible. The term Gnostic means "knowledge."
5. Which of the Old Testament tribes of Israel is noticeably absent from the listings of the tribes found in the book of Revelation?

Answer: Dan

Dan is not listed, but Manasseh or Manasses, the name of one of Joseph's sons, is mentioned instead. Some people think that Dan is not included because the false prophet arises from this tribe. Others think that the 144,000 people mentioned as those receiving the seal of God are not Jewish at all. (Revelation chapter 7.)
6. What was the name of the infant who was born with a scarlet thread bound upon his hand?

Answer: Zarah

In the 38th chapter of Genesis, we find twins being born. One of them stuck his hand out, as if ready to be born, and the midwife tied a scarlet thread around it, but his brother Pharez was born first, then the infant Zarah with the thread on his hand was born next. (Genesis 38: 27-30)
7. There are at least two instances of animals carrying on conversations with people according to the Bible. One conversed with a woman; the other spoke to a man. The woman became "as a god" and the man saw an angel after the animal reasoned with him. From the choices given, can you select the people mentioned?

Answer: Eve and Balaam

Eve was spoken to by a serpent in the garden of Eden in Genesis 3: 1-13. He promised Eve that she would be as a god, knowing the difference between good and evil. Balaam was a prophet who was sent by the king of Moab, (modern day Jordan), to curse the children of Israel.

The donkey he was riding upon balked because it saw an angel standing in its way with a sword drawn, ready to kill Balaam. The angel informed him that had the donkey not balked, he would have slain Balaam, but would have spared the donkey's life. (Numbers, chapter 22). (Interestingly, both animals were of the opposite sex from their human counterparts.)
8. Several people that are mentioned in the Old Testament are seen by Christians as a foreshadowing of Christ. One, however, is even referred to as a kinsman redeemer. What is his name? (Hint: he is listed in the New Testament as an ancestor of Jesus.)

Answer: Boaz

The book of Ruth is only four chapters long, but Christians believe it represents Christ's love for His people and the church. In this interpretation, Ruth is a foreshadowing of the bride of Christ, the church, while Boaz, her second husband, is a foreshadowing of Christ himself. They are both ancestors of Jesus as mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:5.
9. After Jesus's resurrection, we are informed that dead people got up from their graves and went into the holy city of Jerusalem. Where do we read this account?

Answer: Matthew

Matthew 27: 50-54 tells us of this remarkable event. It is the only gospel account that mentions it.
10. Which native-born Hebrew served as both a cupbearer or wine taster to Artaxerxes, the king of Persia (modern-day Iran), and as the "Tirshatha" or governor of the land of Judah?

Answer: Nehemiah

The children of Israel had been taken captive by the Babylonians. Nehemiah was placed in a trusted position as the king's cupbearer to ensure the king was not poisoned. Because of his position in the court, the king, who released the captives in three different "waves", entrusted Nehemiah to oversee the rebuilding of Jerusalem in his own homeland. (Nehemiah 2:1-6 5:14 and 8:9).
