2. My brother just headed off to participate in his favorite sport, muttering about the green fees as he left. Which of these pieces of sporting equipment was he most likely to be taking with him?

Answer: A set of golf clubs

A green fee is the charge for playing a round of golf at a particular club. The price varies dramatically from place to place, and weekday prices are often cheaper, to encourage play when the course will be less crowded. Some courses also offer a reduced fee to play only nine holes, instead of the full eighteen.

A golf cart and/or caddie, if on offer, will generally cost you extra.

3. Where on a golf course is a golfer urged to use a rake?

4. This American tennis player dominated the sport in the 1990s and was nicknamed 'pistol'. He won a total of 14 Grand Slam titles, including seven Wimbledon wins. Who is this?

Answer: Pete Sampras

Pete Sampras is regarded as one of the all-time great tennis players. His 14 Grand Slam triumphs set a record. They include Wimbledon (seven), US Open (five), and the Australian Open (two). He never won the French Open and so did not complete a career Grand Slam.

His rivalry with fellow American Andre Agassi became legendary. Promoted by various Nike advertisements, they played a total of 34 times with Sampras winning 20 of those encounters.

6. In ten-pin bowling, what old-fashioned retail-store name is used to describe a spare leaving a 5-10 split?

Answer: Woolworth

Also known more generically as the "dime-store split," a 5-10 split leaves the center pin of the third row and the right-most pin of the fourth row standing. This split is normally converted by rolling the ball into the 5-pin at such an angle as to drive it right and back to strike the 10-pin. To knock down both of these pins and thereby score the frame a "spare", the bowler must make this "killer shot." The F.W. Woolworth Company operated what were popularly called "five and dime" or "five and ten cent" stores from 1912-1997.
