6. ICE HOCKEY: Before whistles were used to stop play in a game of ice hockey, what ancient devices were utilised instead?

Answer: Cow bells

Based on the centuries old game of field hockey, ice hockey, as we know it today, was developed in Canada. Originally played outdoors on frozen stretches of water, the first indoor hockey game was played in Montreal in 1875. Officials use whistles to stop play at any time. Prior to their use, however, cow bells were once used for this purpose. Famous referee Fred Waghorne (1865-1956) was the first to introduce whistles to the game.

This came about because of disruptive fans bringing their own cow bells to the game in an attempt to stop play.
