Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Hall of Fame great led his National League by winning the batting crown twice, and with home runs four times. He was the second player to hit over 700 home runs in a career. Who was this that retired in the American League?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Henry Aaron began his career in 1954 with the Milwaukee Braves. What a season that team had with Eddie Mathews, Johnny Logan, Joe Adcock, and pitchers Lew Burdette and Warren Spahn. The Braves finished third in the 1954 season, then won the World Series over the Yankees in 1957. Aaron retired as a Milwaukee Brewer with 755 home runs, surpassing Babe Ruth's record of 714.
2. 1986 saw the Oakland Athletics with two players in rookie status. One was Mark McGwire. Who was the other who won the Rookie of the Year award in that season?

Answer: Jose Canseco

The others were at least 35 years old in 1986. McGwire did not play enough to have his rookie status removed, then won the rookie award in 1987 with his 49 home runs. Canseco was in the same boat in 1985 with his rookie status, then hit 33 home runs to win his rookie award in 1986.
3. Some might say that I had an up and down career. Even though I won 20 games in a season, then lost 20 in the next, I still won four Cy Young awards in my career, and was the second pitcher in history to strike out 4000 batters. Who am I?

Answer: Steve Carlton

The others listed never won 20 games in a season. Carlton began his career with the Cardinals, but was traded in 1972 to the Phillies. Steve showed his appreciation by winning his first Cy Young award in 1972 with his 27-10 record. 1973 saw him go 13-20. He would go on to win 20+ games another four times, and win three more Cy Young awards. Carlton retired as a Twin in 1988.
4. Two catchers both won the MVP in their league, both in 1951 and 1955. Who were these Hall of Fame catchers?

Answer: Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella

None of the other combinations were both catchers. Yogi won the 1951 MVP over Ned Garver of the St. Louis Browns, then in 1955 over Al Kaline of the Tigers. Campanella, also a catcher for the Dodgers, won the 1951 MVP over Stan Musial of the Cardinals, then in 1955 over teammate Duke Snider.
5. Joseph Jefferson "Shoeless Joe" Jackson is remembered for possibly being the greatest player in history, and also for being a part of a historical black mark with the White Sox in 1919. Which team did Joe begin his Major League career with?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

1908 saw Connie Mack's Athletics give him his first chance in baseball, but played in only five games in each of his first two seasons. From 1910-1915 with the Indians, he showed his potential including a .408 average in 1911. He still lost the batting title to Ty Cobb that season. Mid-season 1915 is when he went to the White Sox.

The 1919 season with its World Series was called the Black Sox Scandal, the rigging of the series against the Cincinnati Reds. Jackson and others were banned from baseball for life for their participation.
6. Some fans may know of Charley Radbourn, a pitcher in 1884 who won 59 games in the season, a record that could not be duplicated with the advent of relievers, set-up specialists, and closers. Which 23-year old almost touched Rabourn's record when he won 53 games in a season?

Answer: John Clarkson

Radbourn set his record with the Providence Grays of the National League. The team existed only from 1883-1885. Clarkson won his 53 with the Chicago White Stockings (later Cubs) in 1885 against 16 losses. In both cases, those pitchers led their team to the National League pennant.
7. With their Father as the Oriole manager, these two brothers also rostered the team in 1987 and 1988. Who was this family?

Answer: Ripken

Cal Sr. took the reins of the Orioles in 1985 for only one game in the season. He came back full time in 1987 with son Billy at second base, and Cal Jr. at shortstop. Both Cal Sr. and Billy left baseball in 1988. Cal went on to play for another 13 seasons.
8. From 1946-1952, which Pittsburgh Pirate had his name on every National League season home run title?

Answer: Ralph Kiner

The others did not begin their careers until at least 1955. Kiner played for only 10 seasons, retiring in 1955. Those 10 seasons brought 369 home runs before he walked away. He shared the home run title twice with Johnny Mize of the Giants in 1947 and 1948, then with Hank Sauer of the Cubs in 1952. Ralph's season high was 54 in 1949.

Unfortunately, Kiner never saw a World Series game.
9. From 1980-1991, Rickey Henderson led every season in stolen bases except for one. Which American Leaguer's name was on the stolen base title in that season, preventing Henderson from winning 12 consecutive stolen base crowns?

Answer: Harold Reynolds

1987 saw Reynolds lead his Mariners and American League with 60 thefts. Rickey still won 12 titles overall in his career, and retired as the first player in history to reach 1000 with his 1406.
10. From 1962-1965, this team had a pitcher in every season lead the league with the most losses in a season. Which team had these four consecutive titles by having a pitcher lose 20 or more in each of those seasons?

Answer: New York Mets

The Mets were building as they just joined the National League in 1962. Those first four seasons saw them lose more than 100 games each time. Their hardluck pitchers were Roger Craig who went 10-24 in 1962, Craig again in 1963 by going 5-22, Tracy Stallard in 1964 with his 10-20 record, and Jack Fisher by going 8-24 in 1965. Al Jackson also went 8-20 twice in that span.

The Mets came out of it by winning their first World Series in 1969.
