Despite losing the first leg 2-0 at Celtic Park, Celtic were still confident they could get a result in the return leg at Arsenal's Emirates stadium.

After a good start from Celtic, Arsenal's Croatian striker Eduardo won a penalty after 30 minutes. Controversially, many people believed Eduardo to have fallen to the ground with no contact having been made against him. Eduardo then duly scored the penalty, and Arsenal won the match 3-1. Italian midfielder Massimo Donati scored a consolation goal for Celtic in stoppage time at the end of the game.

The teams with country represented were APOEL (Cyprus), AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands), Debrecen (Hungary), FC Zurich (Switzerland), Rubin Kazan (Russia), Standard Liege (Belgium), Unirea Urziceni (Romania), and VFL Wolfsburg (Germany).

None of these 8 teams qualified for the knockout phase of the competition, with 4 finishing bottom of their respective groups and the other 4 finishing in third place, and thereby qualifying for a place in the Europa League Round of 32.

Answer: Rubin won 2-1

Rubin, Russian league champions in season 2008/09, were making their debut in the group stages of the Champions League in 2009/10. Barcelona was the holder of the trophy, having won the Champions League in 2008/09.

Rubin took the lead after only 2 minutes, and despite a goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic just after half-time, Rubin won the game 2-1.

In the return leg two weeks later, Barcelona fared slightly better, but could still only manage a 0-0 draw.

Bordeaux topped Group A, which also included Bayern Munich, Juventus and Maccabi Haifa, with an impressive 16 points, their only slip up being a 1-1 draw away to Juventus.

Both Maccabi Haifa and Debrecen finished bottom of their respective groups having lost all of their games.

Real Madrid were top scorers in the group stage with 16 goals, while Debrecen had the worst defence, conceding 19 goals in total.

Answer: Liverpool

Liverpool were drawn in the group stage against Fiorentina, Lyon, and Debrecen.

Liverpool finished third in Group E, after picking up 2 wins (both against Debrecen), 1 draw (1-1 at Lyon), and 3 losses. They qualified in the last 32 of the Europa League, where they were eventually defeated in the semi-final stage by eventual winners Atletico Madrid.

Of the other 3 managers listed, Claudio Ranieri was a former manager of Chelsea, while Rafael Benitez took over as manager of Inter Milan in 2010. Carlos Ancelotti was the manager of Chelsea for this tie. He had his own motives for wanting to do well against Inter, having managed AC Milan from 2001-2009.

Inter won the tie 3-1 on aggregate, following a 2-1 win in Milan and a 1-0 win in the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Less than a month after winning the 2009/10 Champions League with Inter, Jose Mourinho left to take over as manager of Spanish side Real Madrid.

Nicklas Bendtner gave Arsenal the lead after 18 minutes, but a first half hat-trick from Messi was fallowed with a fourth in the dying minutes of the game, to give Barcelona a 4-1 second leg victory, and a 6-3 aggregate win.

Argentinian playmaker Messi was considered by many to be the greatest player in the world at that time. He was the top scorer in the 2009/10 Champions League with 8 goals in 12 games.

Prior to the 2009/10 season, Lyon had never gone past the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League/European Cup.

Of the other three, Bayern Munich had won the competition 4 times (1974, 1975, 1976, 2001); Barcelona had previously won the competition 3 times (1992, 2006, 2009); and Inter Milan had won the competition on 2 occasions (1964, 1965).

The final was played on 22 May 2010 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, home of Real Madrid.

The final saw the first meeting between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich in a competitive final. Both sides were hoping to become the first team in their respective countries to complete the treble of league title, national cup & Champions League/European Cup. Inter went on to win the match 2-0 thanks to two goals from Argentinian striker Diego Milito.

Interestingly, none of the players in the Inter Milan starting line-up for the final was an Italian national.
