Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which World Series did two wildcard teams meet for the first time in history?

Answer: 2002

The Angels and the Giants went at it in 2002, the first time since the wildcard position was added to postseason play in 1995. The Angels won four games to three, with Troy Glaus of the Angels winning the MVP. Four of the seven games were decided by one run.
2. The 1905 World Series was unique in itself. The New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics four games to one. All five games in the series were shutouts. Which Giant pitcher threw three of them?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

Radbourn had retired 14 years earlier, and the other two weren't rookies for almost 50 years. Only two players for the Giants hit over .300 in the series, and the team batted a frivolous .217. Mathewson was backed by Joe McGinnity who threw the other shutout for New York, and Chief Bender threw a shutout for Philadelphia in their only win.
3. The 1920 World Series was full of firsts, and were provided by the Cleveland Indians. A player played at three different positions, the first World Series grand slam was hit, the first series home run by a pitcher, and an unassisted triple-play was performed. Who was the stingy one and did the triple-play by himself?

Answer: Bill Wambsganss

The others listed weren't born yet. The Indians' Elmer Smith hit the first grand four-bagger, pitcher Jim Bagby went to the stands, and player-manager Tris Speaker was the flexible one who played left field, right field, and first base. The Indians defeated Brooklyn, five games to two. Just months earlier, Cleveland's Ray Chapman was killed by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays.
4. In 1997, the Indians were two outs away from their first World Series crown in 49 years. Which Cleveland closer could not get them two outs in the ninth inning, allowed a game-tying sacrifice fly, then watched the Indians lose in extra innings?

Answer: Jose Mesa

The others were all retired 25+ years. In extra innings, Florida's Edgar Renteria's bases-loaded single scored Craig Counsell that would give the title to the Marlins. Livan Hernandez garnered the series MVP, but had the Indians won it all, it would have easily gone to Cleveland pitcher, Jaret Wright, won two games in the series.
5. In game six of the 1993 World Series, Toronto fans saw Joe Carter hit a bottom of the ninth inning home run off Mitch Williams to defeat the Phillies 8-6. This home run overshadowed an event in game four. What happened in game four?

Answer: The teams set a record for most runs in a World Series

In a slugfest in game four, the Blue Jays outlasted the Phillies 15-14, setting a record for most combined runs. Losing pitcher Mitch Williams was on the wrong side again in this one. Toronto won the series, four games to two. Blue Jays' Paul Molitor was the series MVP, hitting .500, 12 for 24, with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, and eight RBIs.
6. In 1991, the Minnesota Twins went to their third World Series since moving to Minnesota. What was strange about the Twins after this series was over?

Answer: After those three World Series, the Twins still had not won a road game

In 1965, Minnesota experienced their first World Series, but lost to the Dodgers four games to three. In 1987, they defeated the Cardinals four games to three, but still with no road game wins. Nonetheless, the Twins snatched their second World Series in five years in 1991 when ex-Tiger ace Jack Morris won a gutty 1-0 extra inning seventh game.

The Braves were on the losing end of the stick.
7. The 1918 World Series saw the Red Sox up against the Cubs. The Red Sox scored only nine runs in the entire series and batted a flimsy .186. Although Boston won the series four games to two, how many total runs did the Cubs score?

Answer: 10

In one of the lowest run totals in a series, Both Babe Ruth and Carl Mays of Boston didn't allow the Cubs more than two runs in a game. No home runs were hit in the series, and Boston scored only nine total runs of their own.
8. The 1988 World Series saw the American League champions Oakland Athletics against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers won, four games to one. Which of the following statements is true about the series?

Answer: McGwire and Canseco had one hit each

Stewart was an Oakland pitcher. Pretty amazing as both Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco were touted as Oakland's big guns, having combined 330 hits and 74 home runs during the regular season. In game one, Canseco was the hero with a grand slam in the second inning, but that moment would later be overshadowed by Kirk Gibson's infamous pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth for the Dodgers. McGwire's only hit was a game-winning home run in game three.

This was the Dodgers' only loss. Oakland was defeated four games to one.

Hershisher won the MVP honors and struck out 17 Athletics.
9. Who set a record for stealing seven bases in a World Series, then tied the record the following season in the next World Series?

Answer: Lou Brock

The others never went to two consecutive World Series. Brock of the Cardinals who would later go on to break Maury Wills' season record of 104, and stealing seven bases in the win over Boston in 1967. He repeated his stealing effort in 1968, but in a losing effort against the Tigers.
10. Who was the first pitcher to appear in all seven games in a World Series in 1973?

Answer: Darold Knowles

The others listed were long retired. The 1973 series saw the Mets vs the Athletics. Jerry Koosman and John Matlack, along with the relief of Tug McGraw nearly brought the Mets their second World Championship. But on the other side it was Darold Knowles who appeared in all the games, all in relief, and copped two saves in the process.

The A's won four games to three, and Reggie Jackson was the series MVP.
