Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first character we saw in this episode?

Answer: C.J. Cregg

This episode of "The West Wing" opened up with a press conference and White House Press Secretary, C.J. Cregg, answered questions. One reporter asked C.J. if she could give details on a lawsuit filed against President Bartlet. C.J. was puzzled and had no idea this happened and the reporter told her she read about it in the "Rocky Mountain News" newspaper. C.J. immediately concluded the conference and told them she would see them again at 5 o'clock p.m.
2. In Toby's first scene, he asked someone if she had set up a meeting with him and a group of what?

Answer: Veterans

Toby spoke to someone named Ginger and asked her if she had set up a meeting between him and a group of veterans. Ginger told him she had a meeting set up for him with the group. Toby asked her if she was sure and she admitted she had not set up the meeting yet but she would.
3. President Bartlet commented that he was set to give a speech to commemorate an anniversary for what event?

Answer: Bombing of Pearl Harbor

This episode aired on November 28th, 2001 (in the United States) so it was right around the real life 60th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which took place on December 7th, 1941. President Barlet commented that he was set to give a speech at a museum that had an exhibit based on this real life event.

He also remarked that a group of veterans objected to his planned speech since they felt it was America-bashing.
4. In Abby Bartlet's first scene, she told Josh that she was going to be in what European city next week?

Answer: Vienna

Abby met with Josh Lyman and informed him about an email that she got from a woman named Amy Gardner. She said that Amy seemed irate, in the email, and Josh stated she always was that way but Abby replied that she agreed with Amy. She further remarked that Amy's positions were echoed by several other women's rights advocacy groups. Right after Abby said this, she informed Josh that she would be in Vienna next week to give a speech on women's rights.
5. Who commented that he/she was in favor of making English the national language of the United States?

Answer: C.J. Cregg

In one scene, several members of The Bartlet Administration discussed educational matters and how they knew of certain critics who thought their current budget proposal, on education, was full of pork barrel spending. C.J. liked the colorful language that these critics espoused and commented that this was why she favored English being the national language of the United States.

In another episode of "The West Wing", President Bartlet expressed support for a bill that would make English the official language of the United States.
6. Josh met with a representative from a women's rights advocacy group. What did he and the representative discuss?

Answer: Prostitution

Josh decided to meet with Amy Gardner to discuss the issue of global prostitution as well as her sending letters to First Lady Abby Bartlet. When Josh first met Amy, she showed him a map, drawn by the U.S. Department of State, on global prostitution and they conversed on a treaty to abolish forced prostitution.

In the midst of their conversation, Josh told Amy that, every time she sent Abby a letter, the First Lady felt guilty that she was not doing enough for women. Amy said to Josh that, in her opinion, Abby did not do enough and could do more. Amy gave Josh examples of prostitution, other than forced prostitution, to persuade him to adopt a better treaty on abolishing prostitution.
7. In one scene, Leo told Toby that a lab in The United Kingdom would let them know if the first case of Mad Cow Disease originated in what U.S. state?

Answer: Nebraska

There was a big issue, in the episode, about recalling lots of beef since it appeared as if lab tests showed there was a case of Mad Cow Disease. The Bartlet Administration had a lab, in The United Kingdom, run a test to see if that disease was spreading, throughout the country, and if the first case was in Nebraska. Leo informed Toby that the lab would notify them within 72 hours.
8. Who did President Bartlet say to that history could not be reduced to dates and names?

Answer: Charlie Young

After President Bartlet met with Leo McGarry to discuss the outbreak of Mad Cow Disease, he went to speak to Charlie Young. Charlie asked him if he needed anything and Bartlet said he was fine. He told Charlie that history could never be reduced to just dates and names and referenced a speech that George Perkins Marsh gave in 1845 to prove his point.
9. Sam Seaborn proposed, to a couple of people, a national law on what?

Answer: Wearing seat belts

The underlying issue, on the lawsuit that President Bartlet faced, was over negligence involving seat belts. To try and rectify the situation, Sam proposed, to two men with whom he met, that The Bartlet Administration sign a national mandatory seat belt law to require all citizens wear a seat belt at all times in a car.

It was mentioned, in the episode, that New Hampshire was the only U.S. state that did not have a seat belt law.
10. Which cast member submitted this episode for consideration for a Primetime Emmy and also won the award?

Answer: Allison Janney (C.J. Cregg)

Janney, who originated the role of Press Secretary C.J. Cregg and portrayed her for the entire run of "The West Wing", submitted this episode for a nomination for a Primetime Emmy for the 2002 Primetime Emmy Awards. Janney received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for this episode and, despite having less airtime than her competitors, she won the Primetime Emmy.

Other Primetime Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2002 were Amy Brenneman for "Judging Amy", Frances Conroy for "Six Feet Under", Jennifer Garner for "Alias", and Rachel Griffiths for "Six Feet Under."
