"Lost": A "Born To Run" Quiz

After following a blonde-haired woman into a hotel room, we see her dye her hair and become a brunette (who we recognize to be Kate). Later Kate went to the guest service desk and receives a letter under the alias "Joan Hart". As the man behind the desk searched the envelope, the "Brown Shoe" logo could be read on the box's side. The "Brown Shoe" company operates many retail stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, including its largest as "Famous Footwear".
After reading the letter given to her (which had money included), Kate is visibly devastated.

When flashing back to the beach, Kate was holding the toy plane as though it were in flight and watching it with wistful eyes. Charlie approached in good spirits, strumming his guitar, and said the word "Platinum". He repeated it when Kate was visibly puzzled, and explained it was as in Platinum Records. Charlie went on about his faith in the raft and that after the helicopters arrived to rescue them, they all would be "ridiculously and eternally famous".

He asked, didn't Kate want to be famous? Kate's expression reflected the idea that, somewhere, she already was.

Dr. Arzt went on about how monsoon season was fast approaching and that the trade winds would shift from north (the preferred direction to passing ships) to south, where the only land to find was Antarctica. Each day they waited increased their chances of dying at sea.
Michael asked Dr.Arz, "So when do we have to leave?"
Dr. Arzt shrugged and replied, "Yesterday."

Answer: Yesterday

He finished this statement with, "I was just assuming you didn't want to die."
Sawyer asked why anyone was listening to the newcomer as they prepared the raft, and Dr. Arzt replied, "Because I'm a doctor and you're a hillbilly." (Dr. Arzt was, in fact, a high school science teacher.)

When Kate visited the hospital, she was carrying a large bundle of flowers (which allowed her to pass a policeman on the way). At the reception desk, Kate told the woman that she had a delivery for Diane Jansen, and the woman directed her around the corner to room 208. Apparently, she had just come out of ICU.

It was suggested that a troubled history existed between Kate and her mother (whose last name differed from Kate's, most likely due to either hers or Kate's maiden names) and when after Kate apologized for all she had put her mother through and her mother recognized her as "Katherine", she began calling for help.

Jack demanded to know why Locke had not shared the hatch with anyone for three weeks. Locke replied that Jack had also kept the Halliburton case of guns from everyone, and both had used their "best discretion" about keeping secrets from the others. (Later, Jack used his discretion again when deciding not to tell anyone that Sun had poisoned Michael, and Sun when deciding not to reveal that Kate had helped her.) When Jack wanted to open it, Sayid said that he had brought Jack to talk Locke out of "this insanity" and that there was an obvious reason that the hatch had no handle- it was never meant to be opened from the outside.

At Tom's house, as Kate admired photos of his 22-month-old son on the refrigerator, Tom spoke with another doctor on the phone asking for an immediate MRI for Diane. He told Kate his son's name was Conner, and that his wife, Rachel, was in Cedar Rapids visiting her parents. (It was unknown who Kate had been married to, either prior or following this incident, thus explaining her last name. We know that her true name is Kate Austin, yet she had identified herself as Kate Ryan in a previous episode.) Kate asked Tom if he thought "it was still there" and they ended up in rural grazing field to dig up a time capsule.

In the Iowa field, surrounded by wandering cattle, Kate and Tom shared beers and many old memories of a past romance in Kate's hometown. After counting six steps and digging, Kate's shovel hit something solid. She pulled up an old "New Kids On The Block" box.

Inside they found old toys- including Tom's toy plane- and a tape recorder, the date of which was August 15, 1989. This date not only reflects the numeric 8/15, but also placed the time at about sixteen years earlier. Both numbers held significance to the infamous flight number and the time which Danielle Rousseau had landed on the island and Hurley had encountered the numbers.

After Kate had threatened his spot on the raft (and Sawyer had been blamed for poisoning Michael) Sawyer became determined to win his place back. The first time he confronted Kate, she was using a lighter to burn the plastic coating off Joanna's ID card.

It appeared that Sawyer hadn't noticed, until he revealed to everyone that Kate was a criminal and a fugitive, trying to assume a new identity. Kate admitted that she had run, been caught, and would be in jail for what she had done. (Her current record, to the viewer's knowledge, was bank robbery and murder, as well as assuming false identities.) Between her confrontation with Sawyer and Jack's new doubt for her, Kate's relationship with them- and the other castaways- would never be the same.

The others stared at Kate with accusing expressions (the same which had been given to Claire earlier). Only Michael spoke when he said turned over the ID, which had been handed to him as proof by Sawyer, and said, "Here." Kate, alone on the beach, knelt down to retrieve the contents Sawyer had dumped from her bag.

There, lying as though it had crashed from flight into the sand, was the toy plane.

Jin appeared many times in this episode while working on the raft, but had only one on-screen line. When Sun approached, she asked if he was going and begged him to talk to her.
Jin looked at her and replied, in Korean, "Yes, I am going."
Sun seemed devastated and apparently poisoned the water with only enough to make Jin sick, so he wouldn't go. The water, of course, affected Michael instead and caused much controversy.
Shannon was the only character to appear without lines in this episode.

Answer: Hurley

Michael seemed pleased to hear that Jack and Locke had not reconciled. While Locke asked Hurley about the water, Hurley accidentally mentioned Kate's "fugitive thing" and complained that he didn't know who he could tell what.
Jack knew the truth about what Sun had done and advised her to say good-bye because Jin was leaving. It was later revealed that Kate had "helped" Sun, with the hidden motive of gaining Jin's spot on the raft.
At the end of the episode, Sun told Kate that when she was a little girl she believed that when she found the man she loved, she would be happy forever.
Kate sighed and replied, "Yeah, me too."

Answer: Sorry

At the end of the episode, when the two finally came to reconcile, Sawyer approached Kate again and announced that he was back on the raft. Kate asked if he was going to say sorry, and Sawyer replied, "Sorry don't suit me." Kate asked why it was so important for Sawyer to be on the raft and Sawyer replied, almost questioning himself, that there wasn't anything on the island worth staying for.

He turned and said he had packing to do, and Kate whispered with genuine sincerity, "Be safe, Sawyer."

Locke was fixing his legs with yet another mysterious mixture. When Walt arrived to tell Locke he "didn't do it", Locke told Walt that it was an accident and that his legs were hurting. (This indicated, perhaps, the wounds Locke inflicted upon himself earlier when he could not feel his legs.) Locke assured Walt that he believed him and reached to touch his arm. When he did, Walt suddenly froze and it seemed as though he could read Locke's intentions.
He gave a clear warning about something of which he had never been told: "Don't open it! Don't open that thing!"
Locke stood staring after him, amazed. Walt's reaction indicated that whatever was contained inside the hatch was, in fact, meant to stay inside.

Answer: In Sun's garden

Walt had questioned Michael about being sure that when they were rescued from the raft, they would return for the others. Michael assured him they would try, but admitted that they could make no guarantees.
When he became ill after drinking the water, Walt ran off to find Jack. After finding Kate and Sun in Sun's garden, Kate went to find Jack and a guilty-looking Sun watched Michael.
Later that night, while Michael was in good spirits about launching the raft the next day, Walt blurted that he had burnt the first raft. Michael listened in stunned silence as Walt explained that he didn't want to leave, and he thought he could stop them.
Michael was surprisingly calm and then said, "We can stay here, you and me. We don't have to go."
Walt looked over and replied, "Yes, we do."
Perhaps he had seen more about the hatch- and its contents- in his vision than anyone else would believe.
