Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who of the following was added to the roster as a fourth judge in this season?

Answer: Tilly Ramsey

As the contestants were brought into the MasterChef Kitchen for immediate introductions, the typical judging panel of Gordon Ramsey, Daphne Oz, and Aaron Sanchez informed the kids that this season would be so much tougher than any one before it, so with that, they needed to add another judge to their group to make sure they were getting it right.

It was with that that they introduced Gordon Ramsey's daughter, Tilly, into the fold. Tilly, who had appeared as a guest judge in earlier seasons of the show, was 12 when the first "MasterChef Junior" season aired, and had since become a cooking show host and cookbook author in the UK, taking after her father.
2. This season included how many participating contestants?

Answer: Twelve

In its lowest cast number since its debut season, "MasterChef Junior" season 9 featured only a dozen of America's best and brightest child cooks competing for the grand prize. In some of the earlier seasons, two kids were sent home in each episode (leaving one survivor of each bottom three), but this low contestant count meant, instead, that only one chef would be eliminated each episode (save for one), allowing for a bit more of a spread-out competition.
3. The contestants' first challenge involved making a dish based on which of these?

Answer: An emoji

Arriving in the MasterChef Kitchen, the twelve contestants met the judges (including Tilly) and each received their white aprons and an emoji cookie. With each cookie, the kids were told to make a dish that was inspired by the emotion behind the cookie they received, doing so within one hour. Bryson won this challenge, winning himself and his family a trip to Las Vegas (to eat at a new Gordon Ramsey restaurant). Bre, however, being the self-professed Burger Queen, was sent home for her poorly-executed meal.
4. In addition to cooking with seafood-themed Mystery Boxes in episode two, the contestants had to incorporate which of these into their dishes?

Answer: Seaweed

The eleven chefs emerged into an 'under-the-sea' themed kitchen in episode two, discovering that they would be cooking in a Mystery Box Challenge that had them opening treasure chests to receive random seafood-- everything from octopus to salmon to lobster.

In one hour, each kid had to make a seafood dish with their special fish as the star, but they needed to incorporate provided seaweed as well. Asher took the win this time, receiving a California seaside vacation prize for his family, while Jason went home for his underseasoned Mahi Mahi, leaving ten contestants remaining.
5. For their first team challenge, the participating cooks had to make nine meals in the MasterChef Kitchen. How many of them needed to be vegan?

Answer: One

Though Team Challenges don't often happen in the MasterChef Junior Kitchen, it's what awaited the top ten home cooks in their third round of the competition when they were greeted by the judges and five members of the Harlem Globetrotters. For this challenge, the judges elected Lydia and Miles as team captains and informed them that each team would have to create a meal for nine people (four judges plus five Globetrotters).

They had to have one protein, two sides, a starch, and a sauce, and as additional requirements, any red meat needed to be medium, and one dish had to be vegan.

At the end of the episode, the red team was declared the losing team and both Lydia, as team captain, and Kristell were sent home, leaving eight.
6. The contestants left the MasterChef Kitchen to celebrate a Los Angeles institution in their sixtieth anniversary. Who were the chefs cooking for?

Answer: Magicians

For a second Team Challenge in a row, the top eight were taken on a field trip to L.A.'s famous Magic Castle both to watch a magic show and cook dinner. Here, Michael and Remy were randomly selected to be team captains before all of the children had to cook separate meals for the guests of the venue, all there to celebrate its sixtieth anniversary, and Executive Chef Ben LaFleche.

At the end of the service, Michael's Blue Team won the day, and though Remy was the team captain for the Red Team, Miles was eliminated instead.
7. In a dessert challenge, the contestants had to pair up to make pancakes. Following this, they competed individually while making which of these treats?

Answer: Ice cream

With only six kids remaining, everyone was randomly split out into teams of two and told to create the perfect pancake stacks for Daphne Oz, spending fifteen minutes creating the pancakes on a griddle, plating them three-high, and adorning them with fresh fruit, coulis, and powdered sugar. Michael and Jordyn won this challenge, meaning the remaining four cooks had to participate in an elimination test wherein they had to create an ice cream dish, making that ice cream from scratch with liquid nitrogen and blast chillers.

After this, Alfred was sent home, failing to make a solid dish.
8. One of the challenges of this season had the top five contestants recreating old dishes. During this episode, which of these was placed into the MasterChef Kitchen?

Answer: A time machine

The final five entered the kitchen to find all manner of props from the past (including a dinosaur), and amongst these, waiting with the judges, was a time machine. After going back in time to become young Gordon, Chef Ramsey emerged from 'back in time' with the cooks' first dishes in the MasterChef Kitchen, imploring them to recreate and elevate their original plates with all they've learned since that point. Michael managed to upgrade his dish into homemade shrimp tortellinis to win his family a trip to Mexico. Jordyn was sent home this episode for her overcooked and poorly plated dish.
9. In the semifinals, the final four contestants joined Gordon in breaking down which of these for a final dish?

Answer: Duck

On semifinal night, the four remaining cooks had to take on their most daunting challenge yet, cooking alongside Gordon Ramsey. First, after working with Gordon to properly break down a duck, the kids had to follow along in real time as Gordon made a signature dish-- duck à l'orange-- following his exacting steps without missing a beat.

When Gordon finished his dish, the cooks needed to finish their plating within sixty seconds before presenting to the judges. This time, Asher was sent home for leaving out his orange sauce and failing to cook his duck enough.
10. Which contestant won "MasterChef Junior" Season 9?

Answer: Bryson

In the finale, three competitors headed to the MasterChef Kitchen one last time to present the judges with a three-course meal-- an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert dish with the prompt to make sure their cooking had a thematic throughline. On top of this, the cooks needed to include an unexpected flambé element in their appetizer.

After Remy presented a Cajun-inspired meal, Michael drew from his Floridian and Trinidadian background, and Bryson leaned on Southern grilling and BBQ, the judges gave the win, this season, to Bryson, presenting him with the MasterChef trophy, the $100,000 USD prize, and a full Viking kitchen.
