Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season of the show featured an uneven amount of competitors. How many children competed in "MasterChef Junior" season 3?

Answer: Nineteen

Nineteen new cooks, all between the ages of 8 and 13, were brought into the MasterChef Kitchen for a chance at the title, and after searching the MasterChef Pantry for their white aprons, they engaged with their first Mystery Box assortment. To the kids' surprise, three different contestants were deemed the winners, and all three were given immunity from the next challenge and the chance to determine the dish everyone else would be cooking, a choice between three of Joe's favourite food: pasta. Choosing between ravioli, lasagna, and pappardelle, they chose for the other sixteen to make pappardelle and a record-setting five cooks were sent home.
2. In episode 2, the then-top-three contestants had to create which of these from scratch...to be thrown at the judges?

Answer: Meringue

For placing in the top three in the previous Elimination Challenge, Andrew, Jimmy, and Ryan Kate were asked to create twelve lemon pies-worth of meringue from scratch, using mixtures to properly cover their pre-made pies. The first to do so would be able to throw a pie in the face of their associated judge (Andrew for Gordon, Ryan Kate for Joe, Jimmy for Graham). Jimmy ended up winning the challenge, earning himself an advantage. All of the judges got pied regardless.
3. In episode 2, contestants needed to make sausages. What kind of challenge was this?

Answer: Team Challenge

Coming out of the individual meringue challenge, Jimmy received the opportunity to pair up all of the contestants (fourteen of them) for the proceeding test of skill. In this challenge, the contestants had to work together to make sausages from scratch, using whatever meat they wanted from a variety of traditional and unconventional meats in the pantry. With only an hour to conceptualize, cook, and plate, Alexis and Micah failed to make a passing dish, mostly due to their underwhelming sides.
4. One of this season's Elimination Challenges featured 'scary reptiles' as the theme. What was selected to be cooked?

Answer: Alligator

The third episode of this season featured a Mystery Box Challenge themed around foods 'better with age' and containing aged New York strip steaks, aged balsamic vinegar, and blue cheese amongst others. Additionally, they had the opportunity to use fresh baby vegetables from the pantry to elevate their dishes. Andrew won the challenge and the ability to choose the meat for everyone else's next dish (between rattlesnake, snapping turtle, and alligator).

He chose alligator, and while some excelled with the tricky meat, Kyler and Mia were sent home.
5. Which of these contestants didn't compete in the ingredient hunt challenge in episode 4?

Answer: Ryan Kate

For having the winning alligator dishes, Corey, Jenna, and Nathan were able to go head-to-head-to-head in a unique challenge, searching the pantry's five hundred unique ingredients to fulfill a shopping list of twenty. The catch was that the kids didn't have labels on the ingredients and only two minutes to find as many as possible. Jenna won the challenge with ten (to Nathan's eight and Corey's seven), giving her the advantage in the next challenge.

Ingredients included ostrich egg, star anise, asparagus, arborio rice, and New York strip steak.
6. In episode 4, teams had to prepare food to be served in/on which of these unique items?

Answer: Sushi boat

Winning the ingredient challenge in episode 4, Jenna was allowed to create all five teams in the subsequent Tag Team Challenge. For this, the kids were required to take turns, swapping every ten minutes for an hour, to replicate a sushi boat containing tuna sushi, salmon, a California roll, and shrimp tempura. Precision was required to succeed in this challenge, and the teams that succeeded exhibited a high amount of technique. Corey and Jack failed to work together well enough and they were both sent home.
7. The hero of the contestants' third Mystery Box, revealed in a dramatic lowering from the ceiling, was which of these?

Answer: Banana

In episode 5, the kids entered the MasterChef Kitchen to face a very dramatic MasterChef reveal as the hero of their dish-- a banana-- was dropped from the ceiling in a wave of fog and bright light. At each workstation was a box full of bananas, and the chefs could use a limited pantry to make a dish of any type to wow the judges. Nathan won this challenge with his delicate banana caramel macarons, and it propelled him into the Top 6 (skipping the next challenge).

The other contestants fought for the chance to get to the next step, replicating a salmon en croute with Gordon's daughter, Matlida.
8. This season's Field Challenge involved which of these?

Answer: Restaurant

The top six children in the competition were brought out into Los Angeles and told that they would be completing the seasonal restaurant takeover making French-inspired cuisine at Comme Ca. There, with Andrew and Jimmy as team captains, they had to learn two appetizers (an octopus and merguez sausage plate and a pea ravioli) and two entrees (a skate wing and a flat iron steak).

The challenge proved tough for all of the contestants, and when they returned to the kitchen, Andrew's full team was given a pass.

The judges saved Jimmy to go to the semifinals, sending Ayla and Kayla home.
9. The semifinal round with the Top 4 contestants featured crème brûlée and what single hero ingredient?

Answer: Raspberry

After a demonstration from Gordon, the Top 4 were asked to torch the perfect creme brulees in a test of skill. With ten minutes and twenty desserts, the person with the most perfect brulees would choose the raspberry-featured dishes for the Elimination Test. Jimmy won with eight perfect desserts and he assigned himself a raspberry trifle. Andrew received a strawberry mousse, Jenna was given a raspberry napoleon, and Nathan was handed a raspberry tart.

It worked out for Andrew and Nathan; both received the most complex dishes and both were pushed into the finale.
10. Which contestant won "MasterChef Junior" season three?

Answer: Nathan

With only ten minutes in pantry, Nathan and Andrew were the final chefs left standing asked to make a cohesive three-course meal for the judges in the season finale. In only ninety minutes, they created an appetizer course, an entree, and a dessert to fight for the title and the prize.

At the end of the season, the judges preferred Nathan's dishes over Andrew's believing his menu to be more cohesive and better prepared. He took with him the $100,000 prize and the trophy, becoming the third male winner in a row.
