Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This season saw the audition phase play out like in the general 'adult' season of "MasterChef". How many kids took white aprons?

Answer: Twenty

Mimicking the flanking "MasterChef" adult seasons, this season of "MasterChef Junior" included an audition round in which forty children competed in the MasterChef Kitchen for twenty white aprons, going head-to-head in cooking battles with key ingredients.

After two episodes of auditions, twenty cooks between the ages of 8 and 13 were sent into the main competition where one or two were eliminated in each episode. This was the first season of "Junior" to feature twenty kids; the previous one saw twenty-four.
2. In their first day in the competition proper, most contestants had to replicate a Michelin Star dish by what famous chef?

Answer: Gordon Ramsay

Although the chefs got to start off simple by cooking dishes with rice for their first Mystery Box Challenge, most of them were immediately propelled into a complex Elimination Test wherein they needed to replicate a Gordon Ramsay signature dish-- a hand-roasted seabass on a cauliflower puree served with carmelized beet root and sauce vierge. Ramsay showed them how to do it, but ultimately, the kids had to get it perfect in one go. Adam excelled in this challenge while Elisabeth and Solomon were eliminated for plating with missing or raw pieces.
3. Only six contestants competed during the first Team Challenge (in episode four). What did they split into teams to make?

Answer: Corn dogs

As is typical of a "Junior" season's second episode, the judges chose contestants randomly and pushed them into a reduced Team Challenge while the others cheered on. This time, six kids (Eddie, Evan, Gonzalo, Justise, Lila, and Peyton) were put into teams of two based on drawing coloured short sticks.

In these teams they had ten minutes to make perfect corn dogs to be judged by Gordon and Christina. For getting thirteen, Evan and Justise got to douse the judges in batter and take immunity in the proceeding challenge-- a vegan burger judged by guest judge Mayim Bialik.
4. The sixth episode featured a challenge with which former First Lady, proponent of the MyPlate nutrition guide?

Answer: Michelle Obama

With their second Mystery Box Challenge, the Top 14 were greeted with a video message from Michelle Obama who asked that the children cook Mystery Box dishes with MyPlate in mind, creating a meal with half a plate of fruit and veggies. Justise won the challenge and a trip to the White House. What followed was an Elimination Challenge in which the children cooked dishes inspired by their mother while "Modern Family" actress Julie Bowen joined the judging panel. Following this challenge, Mashu and Donovan were eliminated, leaving twelve.
5. Richard Blais joined the judging panel for two episodes (starting in episode seven), in one instance to critique the contestants' use of what kitchen tool for an Elimination Challenge?

Answer: Blowtorch

Although the Top 12 split into teams to share in the effort of making pistachio pudding pies, nine of them were brought before the judges to test their technical skills with a blowtorch. While most of the kids made savoury dishes, others either flopped or excelled massively with desserts. Ultimately, the two children who were eliminated failed to bring forth plates that properly used the hero device-- Jasmine and Syd were asked to leave their MasterChef aprons and depart.
6. How many contestants were given a change to return to the MasterChef Kitchen after elimination?

Answer: Six

While the Top 10 waited on the balcony at the halfway point of the competition, the six previously-eliminated contestants returned to the MasterChef Kitchen for a shot at redemption. To prove their mettle, all six had to properly butcher a chicken into its respective parts in ten minutes. Jasmine won this and had the opportunity to choose the chicken pieces that she and her competitors would need to cook with in the proceeding challenge.

Her selection of chicken oysters for herself secured her white apron while Gonzalo's chicken thighs helped him nab the other.
7. Gordon and Christina dressed as elves during a challenge in which the competitors made which of these?

Answer: Gingerbread houses

In episode 10, the Top 10 child chefs were greeted with a winter wonderland in the MasterChef Kitchen wherein Gordon and Christina, dressed as elves, handed off presents containing coloured aprons to five teams of two. In this challenge they had to replicate a gingerbread house, working together for twenty minutes to decorate their own smaller versions. Cydney and Peyton won the challenge while all of the kids were sprayed with frosting by Aaron Sanchez, their special guest judge.

In the challenge to follow, the kids had to replicate a different dish-- Gordon's signature beef wellington. Avani and Mark were eliminated on this one.
8. Which Muppet joined the Top 6 in making steak frites?

Answer: Miss Piggy

In episode 12, the Top 6 were met with a complicated Team Challenge cooking for twenty people in the MasterChef Restaurant, but this led to a unique steak frites Elimination Challenge in which the winners of the previous challenge had thirty minutes to cook (instead of twenty-five for the others).

They were joined by a special guest judge, the Swedish Chef, who was present to critique each plate, while Miss Piggy joined the competition by cooking...or rather having Gordon Ramsay cook the dish. None of the kids were eliminated; Miss Piggy cheated, so she was sent home.
9. During the semifinal round, which was not a protein that the children were asked to cook?

Answer: Alligator

After eating and replicating chocolate lava cakes in their penultimate challenge, the Top 4 contestants were put before one last Elimination Challenge. Jasmine, who won the lava cake task, got to choose the hero proteins for herself and her competitors by taking lamb for herself and giving beef to Adam, goat to Justise, and pork to Shayne. Once again, Jasmine utilized the winner's advantage to a victory-- it sent herself and Justise into the finals for the second all-girl finale of the "Junior" series.
10. Which contestant won "MasterChef Junior" season 5?

Answer: Jasmine

In the finale this season, two contestants returned for a final head-to-head battle royale in the MasterChef Kitchen, this time being judged not only by Gordon Ramsay and Chirstina Tosi, but special guest judges Wolfgang Puck and Martha Stewart. Both Jasmine and Justise had to cook an appetizer, entree, and dessert in only ninety minutes.

After all of the dishes were tasted, the grand prize went to Jasmine, who became the first contestant on any U.S. season to be eliminated and still win the season.

She took with her the $100,000 grand prize and the MasterChef trophy.
