Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first episode of the season saw how many kids enter the MasterChef kitchen for a chance to win a white apron?

Answer: Twenty-four

While most seasons of "MasterChef" have involved a general audition process where the home cooks present dishes to the judges one-by-one, "MasterChef Junior" was the first to do away with this convention, bringing twenty-four child chefs into the kitchen from the get-go and opting to whittle them down to a total of twelve for the main event. All contestants this season ranged in age from 9 to 13.
2. During their first day in the MasterChef kitchen, the contestants were tasked with making a dish in one of three categories of food. Which was not one of them?

Answer: Vegetarian

On their first day in the MasterChef Kitchen, the twenty-four eligible children were split into three groups of eight and told to make their best dishes for a chance at a white apron; the judges would taste each and pick the winning dishes to result in a Top 12.

The first group had to cook seafood dishes; the second group cooked fresh pasta; the final group brought their baking technique. The process culled half of the children leaving only a dozen to compete. Two would be eliminated every episode thereafter.
3. One of the season's first challenges involved making the judges' favourite childhood foods. Which was not one of those dishes?

Answer: Macaroni and cheese

In the first proper day in the MasterChef Kitchen, the contestants were given their first Mystery Box containing filet mignon, tiger shrimp, puff pastry, mixed berries, and blue cheese (amongst other items). What resulted was a series of restaurant-quality dishes, and Jack's was chosen as the winner.

As such, he joined the judges in the pantry to choose the food his competitors would be cooking for the next challenge (based on the judges' childhood favourites). Choosing between Joe's chicken wings, Graham's hamburger, and Gordon's fish sticks, he forced his competitors to make high-quality burgers.

It got Tommy and Molly sent home.
4. Three of the young chefs were tasked with making which of these, which they needed to hold over the judge's heads?

Answer: Whipped cream

For having the best burgers in the previous round, Alexander, Gavin, and Kaylen were put into their own challenge during the start of the Top 10 episode. For this, the three of them were given a bowl, a whisk, and a bottle of heavy cream, and they needed to whip their cream to the proper consistency to win.

As a fun twist, the kids were told that their whipped cream would run the test when they were able to tip the contents of their bowls over the judges' heads. It resulted in Joe and Gordon getting soaked by unwhipped cream; only Alexander's was thick enough to pass muster, granting him an advantage in the next challenge.
5. The children worked in a tag team challenge in episode 3, working together to make which of these?

Answer: Beef Wellington

Though Alexander received the advantage in episode 3, he still needed to cook. Instead, he had the chance to pair up himself and his competitors for a tag team challenge and all of the contestants had to work together to replicate Gordon Ramsey's signature dish, the Beef Wellington.

The task proved difficult, but not impossible for the underage cooks though Jewels and Roen were unable to pass muster and they were sent home.
6. Which contestant won a Mystery Box challenge this season?

Answer: Sarah

One of the season's youngest competitors, Sarah proved adept at cooking most items thrown at her. She ended up winning the second Mystery Box challenge of the season (in episode 4), managing to cook a series of ingredients that were picked specifically because kids wouldn't enjoy cooking them.

It gave her immunity from the next task, a baking challenge, in which the contestants had to make a three-layer cake. Kaylen and Sofia were sent home for this one.
7. Only one task this season was completed outside of the MasterChef kitchen. What did this task involve?

Answer: Restaurant takeover

Although a general season of "MasterChef" will take its contestants out for field challenges every other day, "MasterChef Junior" reduced time outside the MasterChef Kitchen, saving that opportunity for the Top 6. For this task, the contestants followed the judges to Downtown L.A. where they needed to cook in the upscale restaurant Drago, memorizing and perfecting complex recipes to impress the head chef. Though the children worked in teams of three, only two cooks were eliminated-- Gavin and Sarah-- leaving four for the semifinals.
8. For their final Pressure Test, the top four contestants had to make a single egg of what preparation?

Answer: Soft-boiled

To bring the competition down to its final two, the judges took the top four contestants and placed them into a difficult challenge involving one egg and their own technical abilities. All four contestants were asked to cook a single soft-boiled egg to be judged-- no do-overs-- and they had to do so without any timer whatsoever. Only Troy's egg was truly soft-boiled (with the others serving overcooked eggs) and as such he was given the advantage going into the subsequent challenge.
9. The semifinal task for the season involved four different parts of the chicken. Which was not amongst them?

Answer: Head

With Troy holding the advantage, the judges informed the top four that their semifinal dish needed to involve one of four cuts of chicken, and Troy would be the one deciding who would have to cook each. He chose to cook with the thighs while giving Alexander the liver, Dara chicken wings, and Jack a bone-in breast.

The plan backfired since he undercooked his own dish. Jack was the other one to come up short, and it sent Dara and Alexander into the final round.
10. Which contestant won "MasterChef Junior" Season 1?

Answer: Alexander

The final round of the competition was not unlike a regular "MasterChef" season. The final two chefs-- Alexander and Dara-- went head-to-head creating an appetizer, entree, and dessert for the judges, and the best showing between the two would win the title of Junior MasterChef, the trophy, and the $100,000 prize.

This ended up going to Alexander who wowed the judges with his entree, a pan-seared veal chop that Gordon stated he would choose as his last meal if he needed to.
