Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 3, teams opened their first clue in what Italian city, the start of a double-length Mega-Leg?

Answer: Bologna

Teams left Innsbruck between Legs 2 and 3 and were flown on the "Amazing Race" charter plane to the city of Bologna, Italy to commence what would be a non-stop Mega-Leg-- two legs of the race with two Detours and two Road Blocks, all of which teams would need to complete without hitting a Pit Stop until the very end.

In Bologna, teams were released from the Pit Start at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, opening clues in groups of two, four, and four, respectively, based on their arrivals at the Pit Stop in Austria.
2. Teams racing through Italy for their Mega-Leg (Leg 3) had to travel in which of these?

Answer: Manual transmission vehicles

Opening their first clues in Bologna, teams were directed to locate their cars on the streets near the church and navigate themselves through the city to Arco del Meloncello. The catch was that teams would hop into their cars to discover they would be driving stick, generally an impediment for most teams in any given season of the show. If they could get into gear, they could find the clue box and locate their Detour task.
3. Racers who finished the 'Head of the Class' Detour task during their Italy Mega-Leg brushed up on which topic?

Answer: Anatomy

Teams who chose to complete the 'Head of the Class' Detour option in Bologna headed to the oldest university in the western world, the University of Bologna, where they had to take up scholarly pursuits. Visiting the Teatro Anatomico, teams had to listen to an eight-minute-long sixteenth-century lecture before heading to a nearby courtyard to take a timed exam, identifying sixteen specific bones and organs on a chart of the human body within a minute and a half.

A perfect score would give them their clue. Glenda and Lumumba, Linton and Sharik, Abby and Will, Aubrey and David, Quinton and Mattie, Emily and Molly, and Rich and Dom all finished this one.
4. Teams completing 'The Big Cheese' as their Detour option in the first half of the Italy Mega-Leg worked with which local food item?

Answer: Parmesan

Teams who could think on their feet were best-suited for selecting 'The Big Cheese' for their Detour task in Bologna, and for this challenge they had to visit Formaggeria Barbieri, a local cheese store, to collect a forty-kilogram parmesan cheese wheel. Carting it through the city streets they then needed to have the wheel cut in half at a local restaurant and subsequently delivered to get their next clue.
Marcus and Michael, Luis and Michelle, and Derek and Claire completed this challenge.
5. Completing their first Road Block of the Italy Mega-Leg, teams had to help construct which of these vehicles?

Answer: Ducati

Completing their Detour task, teams were directed to the Ducati Factory to find their next clue, their first Road Block of the Mega-Leg. For this task, one member of each team had to help build a motorbike. Selecting one racer 'ready to take a brake', the participating teammates had to assemble the wheels and brakes of a Ducati Panigale V4, have their work approved, and then properly place the motorbike's body panels. If they could get it road-ready, they could get their next clue and commence the second half of their Mega-Leg.

Michael, Claire, Quinton, Luis, Will, David, Linton, Emily, Lumumba, and Rich completed this challenge.
6. The second half of the Mega-Leg sent teams to what Tuscan city?

Answer: Florence

Completing their Road Blocks in Bologna, teams were told to drive themselves into Tuscany to find the city of Florence. Once there, teams could locate Villa Bardini on the south side of the Arno River and find their next clue box there. Teams being led to this second city were told that this was the half-way point of their Mega-Leg, and going forward they would encounter another Road Block and another Detour before seeing the Pit Stop mat.
7. If racers damaged their sculptures in the Italian Mega-Leg's second Road Block task, what would happen?

Answer: They would be given plaster to repair it

Once teams arrived in the city of Florence and located Villa Bardini they could find the marked parking lot, leave their cars, and follow the path to the villa proper. There, inside the doors they found their second Road Block clue of the Mega-Leg and selected the racer who 'wanted a chiseled body'. For this task, the selected teammate needed to take sculpting tools and, with a provided block, chisel out a sculpture hidden within. If they could do so to the approval of a local artist they would receive their next clue. Marcus, Molly, Michelle, Sharik, Abby, Mattie, Aubrey, Derek, Lumumba, and Dom were selected for this challenge.
8. The 'Eye For Fashion' Detour task sent teams looking for fashion shoots, but how many did they find?

Answer: Three

Racers moved out of their second Road Block task and into their second Detour to close out Leg 3, and the first of their options was 'Eye For Fashion'. For this task, teams raced down into Florence's city centre on foot to find three fashion shoots at local landmarks-- one at Piazza della Repubblica, one at Piazza del Duomo, and one at Piazza della Signoria-- and memorize details from each the outfits being worn at each one. If they could identify the correct outfits from a provided sketchbook held by a designer near the Arno River, matching them to their locations, they could receive their next clue. Emily and Molly, Marcus and Michael, Aubrey and David, and Rich and Dom completed this challenge.
9. In the 'Windows of Opportunity' Detour task, teams had to collect different foods. Which was not one of them?

Answer: Buffalo mozzarella

Teams completing the 'Windows of Opportunity' Detour task also had to head into Florence's city centre albeit to other locations to locate some of the city's wine windows, small holes in the walls of local vendors' buildings designed to dispense food and wine during the times of the Bubonic Plague. Though Florence has one hundred and fifty windows in the city, teams had to find three specific ones.

At each window they needed to pick up key items-- a pot of Tuscan soup, cured meats, and biscotti-- and deliver them on foot to a riverside trattoria to get their next clue. Luis and Michelle, Abby and Will, Quinton and Mattie, Derek and Claire, Linton and Sharik, and Glenda and Lumumba completed this task.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of the Mega-Leg in Italy?

Answer: Rich and Dom

Once teams wrapped up their Detour tasks they needed to race on foot to their third Pit Stop in an effort to avoid elimination, and to do that they needed to navigate their way to Piazza Ognissanti, one of the more-than-sixty Piazzas in Florence, to check in. Emily and Molly overtook front-runners Marcus and Michael leaving the Detour and managed a first place victory, claiming enough Expedia Rewards Points for a five-night stay for two in Sydney, Australia. Though Sharik checked out during the last section of the leg through Florence, she and Linton couldn't be overtaken by Rich and Dom who, celebrating their anniversary, arrived in tenth and were eliminated from the race.
