Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Tim Drake's student in "The Devil's Chord"?

Answer: Henry Arbinger

Henry Arbinger, or Harbinger, is the son of Maestro. Tim Drake plays the Devil's Chord, a triune set of notes that has an evil sound and can supposedly bring forth demons. The evil spirit Maestro appears shortly after.

Henry was played by Kit Rakusen. He began acting in 2020 and has about a dozen credits under his belt.
2. What was the name of the villain in "The Devil's Chord"?

Answer: Maestro

Maestro was played with great panache by Jinkx Monsoon. A two time winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" (seasons 5 and 7), Jinkx has gone on to have a successful film and television career.

Maestro is the embodiment of music, who is driven to steal music from the world. After almost four decades, music is on its last gasp. Ruby and the Doctor defeat Maestro with a little help from John Lennon and Paul McCartney on the Mrs Mills piano.

Maestro is the child of the Celestial Toymaker and has huge daddy issues. Right before being vanquished, she warned that other minions of the Toymaker were out there waiting.
3. Ruby wants to see the Beatles. Where does the Doctor take her?

Answer: EMI studios, London

Ruby and Fifteen travel to Abbey Road on February 11, 1963 with hopes of watching the Beatles record "Please Please Me", their first album. They talk with John and Paul, who are discouraged about the future of music.

The Beatles, pre-Ringo, honed their musical skills in Hamburg from 1960 to 1962. They performed almost 300 shows at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, John and Paul's hometown. They had their American debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February 1964.
4. What is the Beatles' first song about in "The Devil's Chord"?

Answer: A dog named Fred

It is a dystopian world indeed where Paul McCartney is writing lyrics like "I've got a dog, he's called Fred/My dog is alive he's not dead" and it gets worse from there. A hilariously awful song.

Russell Davies explains that the plot arose out of the fact that getting the rights to Beatles music was prohibitively expensive. So he created an alternate reality where Lennon and McCartney wrote awful songs and had no passion for music.

Cilla Black also makes an appearance with a really bad love ballad.
5. In another piece of alternate history in "The Devil's Chord", what country is the USSR threatening in February 1963?

Answer: Finland

The Doctor reads a headline that says "Russia threatens Finland" and notes that did not happen in their original timeline.

The Doctor and Ruby return to 2024 to find that London is a nuclear wasteland. Maestro explains that her goal is to ultimately harness the music of the spheres and destroy everything in existence.
6. What is the name of Ruby's friend that she wrote the beautiful song for?

Answer: Trudy

Ruby explains that she wrote the song for her lesbian friend Trudy after a bad breakup. The song is achingly sad yet hopeful, and is some of the best work Murray Gold has done on the show.

As Ruby plays, she reminds people of the beauty and joy of music. It also brings forth the wrath of Maestro, who chases the Doctor and Ruby for the rest of the episode.
7. Which two Beatles play the Mrs. Mills piano and banish Maestro?

Answer: John and Paul

John and Paul, the duo who created some of the most beloved songs of all time, manage to crack the code and play the chord to send Maestro back to where she came from.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney met in Liverpool. Over the next decade, their band became the most successful group ever, with dozens of legendary songs.

John was murdered in December 1980. Paul was still performing to sold-out crowds at age 80.
8. Finish the Doctor's quote: "There's always a ___________ at the end."

Answer: Twist

"There's always a twist at end." In this case it's literal, as the episode ends with a huge musical number that includes The Twist. It took four days to shoot the dance sequence.
9. The scene of Ruby and the Doctor dancing with umbrellas was shot at Abbey Road in London.

Answer: False

No, the show was shot in Cardiff, Wales. It was shot at The Parade, one of Cardiff's major downtown streets. Kudos to the art direction crew for so accurately recreating such an iconic location.

Gatwa and Gibson went to the real Abbey Road after the episode was shot and were not that impressed.
10. Who directed "The Devil's Chord"?

Answer: Ben Chessell

Ben Chessell has been directing since 2004, mainly in television. His resume includes "Rush" (2020), "The Family Law" (2026-19) and "Surviving Summer" (2022). This was his first work on "Doctor Who".

Chris Mason played John Lennon. He started acting as a kid in 1991. His credits include "Broadchurch" (2017) and "Riverdale" (2021).

Alexis Stannus was the Art Director, who did such a fantastic job of recreating EMI studios.

Ed White played George Martin, the producer who helped make the Beatles superstars. He started working in television in 2017.
