Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Sheldon and Mary are in Germany, who is in charge of the Cooper home?

Answer: Missy

Missy does all the cooking and cleaning and she tells everybody what to do and where they are going to sleep. Mandy says that Missy will be a good mom one day. George asked who put her in charge. Mandy, Georgie, and Missy raise their hands. Over time, she gets tired of doing all the work around the house while the adult men in the house aren't doing anything. So, she stops cooking and cleaning for them and she makes a chore chart that she posts on the refrigerator.
2. Who is Sheldon's tutor?

Answer: Chen

Sheldon is way behind the other students in his class because they all went to better universities than East Texas Tech. The professor assigns a tutor for Sheldon, an Asian girl who appears to be younger than him. She hits him with a pencil every time he makes a mistake. Mary is pleased to see Sheldon being humbled. Sheldon gets increasingly frustrated that he's not the smartest person in the room. He calls his professors at East Texas Tech, forgetting about the time difference between Germany and the United States and waking them up at three in the morning. Dr. Linkletter tells Sheldon that he won't learn anything if he is always the smartest person in the room, so he should be quiet and listen. In the end, a humbled Sheldon Cooper sits in the classroom and remains quiet and listens.

Back at home in a later episode, Sheldon gets a letter from Chen, saying that their paper was published in the "International Physics Review." This draws interest from elite universities everywhere.

Fun fact: the actress is named "Reagan," the same name as the actress who does Heather B. and also the same name as the actress who does Missy. This show began when I was 30. In my first 30 years on Earth, I'd never met or heard of anyone with the first name "Reagan." This show had three young actresses with that name.
3. What kind of trouble does Sheldon get into in Germany?

Answer: He gets stranded at a train stop

Mary refuses to let Sheldon explore Europe by train. So, Sheldon lies to her and tells her that he's going to the library but then he gets on a train. At first, he enjoys the train ride. However, he gets off at a train stop to get a strudel and leaves his belongings on the train, unaware that the train is going leave in a few seconds. The train leaves with his belongings on it and he gets stranded. He calls Missy and tells her what happened, but she doesn't help. He asks the guards for a ride back to where he was staying, but they tell him to walk. He walks 18 kilometers, and runs for a few of them while being chased by a dog, and gets back home.

When he gets home, Mary sees that he is dirty and is missing a shoe. Mary asks him what happened. Sheldon says that a dog attacked him while he was on his way home from the library, unaware that Missy had already called their mom and told her the truth. Mary pretends to believe him and he thinks he got away with it.
4. Who is Helga?

Answer: Mary in disguise

It was revealed on The Big Bang Theory that Sheldon's iconic knocking routine began when he saw his father having coitus with another woman. He added in extra knocks to give people time to put their clothes back on.

On "Young Sheldon," it's revealed that the woman was really his mother in a wig. She had just gotten back from Germany, so she decided to do some role-playing as a German woman named "Helga," disguising her voice and her hair. When Sheldon walked in, he could only see her from behind and he didn't realize who he was looking at. He spent the rest of his life thinking that his father cheated on his mother.

This creates a conflict with an episode of "The Big Bang Theory" called "The Holiday Summation," where Sheldon tells Amy that his mother gave a speech to his father and his father's girlfriend. Did she give that speech to herself?
5. While George cleans the toilet, what song by Elvis Costello plays?

Answer: Pump it up

The unintentional irony of this moment is that I skipped the premiere of "Teen Angst and a Smart-Boy Walk of Shame" to go to an Elvis Costello concert. It was worth it. Besides, I got home after midnight and watched it on the CBS website as soon as I got home, anyway. This made it amusing to me that an Elvis Costello song showed up in a "Young Sheldon" episode a year later. What if the writers found out that I did this and they put that song in the episode so I'd never again miss another premiere? It's funny to think about.

As for the context, Missy told her father that something was wrong with the toilet. He tries to clean it with a plunger, which is when we hear that song. It doesn't work and he has to call a plumber, The plumber says that the septic tank is in terrible shape. George doesn't have the money to get it fixed and the contractor doesn't want to help him because George bullied him when they were in school. George ends up having to steal a portable toilet from the high school football field. Mandy refuses to use it and she and Georgie move out of Sheldon's room and into her parents' home. It turns out there's a snake in the portable toilet. The women avoid it, but George uses it at night and does not see it before it bites him.
6. Who hires Georgie to work at his tire shop?

Answer: Mandy's father

Georgie's journey to becoming "Dr. Tire" (his moniker on "The Big Bang Theory" where he's the richest tire salesman in Texas) began in Herschel's (the father who lived next door at the time) garage back in season two. When George Senior went there to get his truck repaired and Georgie was with him, Georgie ended proving that he knew a thing or two about cars because he took an auto repair class at school. Herschel hires him, and then he discovers that Georgie is a car genius and he's especially gifted in tires.

However, the next year, Herschel closes his garage, moves away, and is never seen again (the actor, Billy Gardell, quit this show because he became the star of "Bob Hearts Abishola"). This ends Georgie's car-repairing career. However, he spends the next few years developing another skill: sales. He then gets a job at Dale's shop helping him sell sporting goods.

In season five, he leaves Dale's store to work at his grandmother's gambling rooms. In season seven, the gambling rooms that Georgie had been working at are shut down by the police and Georgie is out of a job. Mandy's father, who runs a store that sells tires, hires Georgie. This job combines the skills that Georgie has already mastered like a pro so it's perfect for him. As an adult, Georgie opens up his own tire shop and becomes "Dr. Tire" and he's very successful.
7. What does Sheldon dislike about MIT?

Answer: The weather

When Sheldon's and Chen's paper gets published, several elite universities want Sheldon. East Texas Tech does not want him to go away. Initially, they hope to use Sheldon's love of Dr. Sturgis and Dr. Linkletter and his hatred of change to convince him to stay. Eventually, the professors realize that Sheldon has outgrown East Texas Tech and it would be wrong to keep him there. They lie to President Hagemeyer and tell her that they did everything they could to keep him there.

Sheldon has a lot of trouble deciding which university to go to. Eventually, he narrows it down to CalTech or MIT. Initially, he chose MIT. When he gets there, it's freezing cold and there's snow everywhere. Sheldon has never dealt with this kind of weather before because there's no snow in Texas. So he decides not to go to MIT and instead goes to CalTech in California, where the weather is similar to what he's used to.
8. What role does Octavia Spencer play on "Young Sheldon?"

Answer: Mee Maw's probation officer

Mee Maw is arrested for running an illegal gambling room and given probation. Her probation officer sentences her to 180 hours of community service, which she mostly serves at the church. She signs up and says she's going to work there for eight hours that day, but she ends up only working six hours and constantly complains about it. Mee Maw finds out that George knows the probation officer because they went to school together, so she blackmails him into talking to her. He tells her to reduce Mee Mw's sentence, but when she asks if he would give special treatment to any player who gives a half-hearted effort in practice, he says "No" and that he'd be tougher on those kids. This convinces her to be tougher on Mee Maw.

Octavia Spencer previously appeared on "The Big Bang Theory" as a DMV clerk, so it's interesting that her "Young Sheldon" character is different from her "Big Bang Theory" character. In the movie "Gifted," she plays the neighbor/maternal figure of a young girl who is played by McKenna Grace, the same actress who does Paige. The cop who arrested Missy and Paige looks similar to Octavia Spencer, but it's not her.
9. Who passes away at the end of "A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture"?

Answer: George

On "The Big Bang Theory," it's established that George passes away when Sheldon is 14. Season seven of Young Sheldon is when Sheldon is 14, so that's when it happened. At the end of "A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture," Wayne and the principal show up at the house to tell them that George had a heart attack at work and passed away.

The women break down in tears while Sheldon appears emotionless.
10. In the present day, who babysits Sheldon's daughter?

Answer: Penny

Though his voice is heard in most episodes and her voice is heard in two earlier episodes, "Memoir" is the only episode of "Young Sheldon" where we see Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik, the actors who did Sheldon and Amy on "The Big Bang Theory." They reprise their roles one final time for the final episode of "Young Sheldon." When Amy reads his memoir, she is impressed to learn that even though Sheldon's parents didn't always understand him, they did everything they could for him. Amy convinces Sheldon that he should do the same for his kids: do everything he can to support them though he doesn't understand them.

At the end of this scene, Sheldon says "I knew we shouldn't have let Penny babysit."
