Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Young Sheldon
Answer: Iain Armitage
Iain Armitage met Jim Parsons, who gave him advice on how to portray the character of Sheldon. Parsons taught Armitage about Sheldon's mannerisms and how to do a mid-Atlantic accent. Why Sheldon has a mid-Atlantic accent is explained in the Pilot. "Young Sheldon" has become a highly successful show in large part due to Armitage's portrayal of Sheldon.
Armitage got his first major acting job in 2014, when he appeared in an episode of "Impractical Jokers." Since, then, he's made cameo appearances in other TV shows, appeared in a view movies, and has been a main actor on the shows "Big Little Lies" and "Young Sheldon." He has been nominated for a Gold Derby Award and a Teen Choice Award, and he won a Young Artist Award for "Best Performance in a TV Series - Leading Young Actor" for his performance on "Young Sheldon".
2. Adult Sheldon
Answer: Jim Parsons
Jim Parsons played Sheldon on "The Big Bang Theory". According to an interview with both Sheldons on CBS, The idea for "Young Sheldon" was inspired by Jim Parsons and his ten-year-old nephew. Parsons thought his nephew seemed a like a young Sheldon, and that made him think "Young Sheldon" would be a great idea for the show, so he pitched it to Chuck Lorre, who created "The Big Bang Theory," and he fully supported it.
On "The Big Bang Theory," we actually see Jim. On this show, we don't see him. We merely hear his voice as he's narrating.
Parsons got his first major acting job in 2002, in an episode of the TV show "Ed." He's been appearing in TV shows and movies ever since. In 2007, he auditioned for the role of Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory." He impressed the show's creator Chuck Lorre so much that Lorre brought Parsons back for a second audition to see if he could replicate it. Since then, "The Big Bang Theory" became the most popular comedy on television from 2007 through 2019, in large part due to Parsons' superb acting. He was nominated for at least three awards and won at least one every year from 2009 through 2019.
"The Big Bang Theory" ended in 2019 because Parsons didn't want to do it anymore. Instead, he focused on the show he created.
3. Missy
Answer: Reagan Revord
Missy is a tomboy who plays baseball on a boys baseball team. She isn't very smart, but she is very perceptive and uses her fists to win fights when boys pick on her.
Revord got her first acting job at the age of six, when she was cast to play the role of Megan in "Modern Family." She is also in the Netflix shows "Grace and Frankie" and "With Bob and David". She also does charity work for a children's hospital in Los Angeles.
4. Georgie
Answer: Montana Jordan
Montana was nominated for a Young Artist award for his portrayal of Georgie. Also, in a couple of episodes of "The Big Bang Theory," the man who plays the adult Georgie is Jerry O'Connell, who looks a lot like Montana Jordan.
Georgie is Sheldon's older brother. He played on the high school football team which was coached by his dad, until he quit to get a job working in his neighbor's garage, and later a job at Dale Ballard's sporting goods store. He is not very smart academically and he gets terrible grades in school, when he even goes to school. However, he has lied to get out of school many times, becoming the master at pretending to be sick. By being a masterful liar, he also became a masterful salesman. Both of his first two bosses (Herschel Sparks and Dale Ballard) initially say that Georgie is the best employee they ever had.
Georgie says he resents Sheldon because his mom gives Sheldon all the attention and love. Adult Georgie refused to come to Sheldon's wedding because although he started and owned a successful tire business, neither Sheldon nor his mom gave him any credit or respect at all. Sheldon hates Georgie because he has sat on his head, or worse. His mom isn't very proud of him because he earned his money by violating commandments of the Bible (mainly, the one that says you shouldn't lie), which upsets his devout Christian mother. Even though Georgie makes a lot of money, that does not please his mom, who doesn't care how much money anyone makes if he or she earns that money by going against the Bible.
5. Mary
Answer: Zoe Perry
Zoe Perry is the daughter of Laurie Metcalf, who plays Mary on "The Big Bang Theory". She basically portrays the character the same way her mom did. Mary is a passionate Christian. She sometimes has problems with Sheldon, who is an atheist, but Sheldon is the only one of her kids who made her proud. On "The Big Bang Theory," adult Georgie admits to Leonard that the reason he didn't want to go to Sheldon's wedding, no matter how much his mom wanted him too, was because both Sheldon and his mom ignore him and his accomplishments.
In addition to being Metcalf's daughter, Zoe is also the daughter of Jeff Perry, an actor on "Scandal". Because both of her parents were successful actors and they had connections to major networks, it was easy for Zoe Perry to get acting jobs. She, too, has made appearances on "Scandal". Since her mom played Mary Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory", it made prefect sense to cast her in the role of young Mary Cooper on "Young Sheldon".
6. George
Answer: Lance Barber
Lance Barber also played Jimmy Speckerman, Leonard's high school bully, who appears in one episode of "The Big Bang Theory." In interviews, Barber has mentioned that some fans are confused by him playing two completely different roles in two related TV shows. George Cooper has admitted that he used to be a bully, so maybe a younger version of him is like Jimmy Speckerman.
George is a sports coach. He coaches the high school football team, that his eldest son plays on in the first season. He is fantastic at dealing with people. Whenever Sheldon is having a major emotional crisis or when he's in trouble, more often than not George knows the perfect thing to say to make Sheldon feel better. He gives great halftime speeches. He's normally a very gentle man, and even when he gets angry and raises his voice, there's a gentleness behind his voice that says that he cares and he's trying to help people feel better. Although he's usually gentle, you better not cross him. One man, the stepfather of Georgie's first girlfriend, learns this lesson the hard way.
7. Mee Maw
Answer: Annie Potts
Unlike Zoe Perry and Laurie Metcalf, Annie Potts and June Squibb (who played Mee Maw on "The Big Bang Theory") are not related. The two women look completely different, and they portray Mee Maw very differently. On "The Big Bang Theory," Sheldon describes his grandmother as "The sweetest, kindest person in the world," and June Squibb portrays that. However, Annie Potts' version of Mee Maw is sometimes pretty far from nice. She's pretty mean to anyone who disrespects her grandchildren.
Annie Potts got her first acting job in 1977. She won a Genie Award in 1981, was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1994, and was nominated for an Emmy in 1994. In 2019, she was nominated for a Critics' Choice award for "Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" for her portrayal of Mee Maw on "Young Sheldon".
8. Dr. Sturgis
Answer: Wallace Shawn
In addition to this, Wallace Shawn also portray's Thoth's receptionist in a dream that Sheldon has. This episode happens shortly after Dr. Sturgis kicked Sheldon out of his class. Fans were wondering if we'd see any more of Dr. Sturgis. "A Baby Tooth and the Egyptian God of Knowledge" assured us that Wallace Shawn's acting talents will still be used on the show. In "A Secret Letter and a Lowly Disc of Processed Meat," Dr. Sturgis vouches for Sheldon's readiness for a college in a video that was made to convince Mary to let Sheldon go to college. This implies that Dr. Sturgis accepted Sheldon's apology and we will be seeing more of him.
Wallace Shawn began appearing in movies in 1979 and TV shows in 1982. He has appeared in "The Princess Bride", "Toy Story", "My Dinner With Andre", "Clueless", and "Prick up Your Ears". He has a younger sister who has autism. That could be why he understands autism very well, and is perfect for the role of the professor on "Young Sheldon" who also has signs of autism, and who is a very good friend of the title character who is also believed by many fans to have autism.
9. Pastor Jeff
Answer: Matt Hobby
Matt Hobby has been acting since 2008, previously appearing in TV shows like "Boardwalk Empire" and "Mom". He is best known for his portrayal of the enthusiastic pastor on "Young Sheldon." Pastor Jeff isn't very good at addressing the contradictions and scientific abnormalities that Sheldon often brings up with him, but he has encouraged Sheldon to read the Bible to do research on the religion before dismissing it.
He also helped Sheldon get invited to the neighbor's party by giving a speech on how people love neighbors.
10. Tam
Answer: Ryan Phuong
Tam introduces Sheldon to comic books and "Dungeons and Dragons" although Mary worries about these things at first. Robert Wu plays Tam on one episode of "The Big Bang Theory," where we learn that the reason we hadn't previously seen Tam on that show was because Tam promised to move to California with Sheldon and he didn't keep that promise, leaving Sheldon to feel scared he'd never make friends there.
In addition to acting, Ryan Phuong has also done some dancing. He has appeared in "The Fresh Beats Band", "Dancing With the Stars", and "The Voice".
11. Mr. Lundy
Answer: Jason Alexander
Jason Alexander is best known for playing George Costanza on "Seinfeld", a role for which he was nominated for seven Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe awards. On "Young Sheldon", he plays Mr. Lundy, a high school drama teacher and real estate agent. He teaches acting because it's his passion, but he does real estate because that's what makes him money.
12. Dale Ballard
Answer: Craig T. Nelson
Craig T. Nelson is best known for playing the title character in the 1990's TV series "Coach", for which he won an Emmy. Maybe that's why he was asked to play the role of the baseball coach on "Young Sheldon". Nelson also portrayed Mr. Incredible in "The Incredibles".
Dale Ballard coaches a (mostly) boys' baseball team and owns a sporting good store. He reluctantly allows a girl (Missy) on his team, but in exchange, the girl's grandmother has to be his girlfriend. He also gives Georgie a job at his store. The Coopers become Dale's favorite people, with Missy being the star of the baseball team and Georgie being the best employee he ever had. However, he is later revealed to be not a very nice guy. He insults Dr. Sturgis multiple times, which upset Mee Maw. In one episode, he takes Mee Maw on a weekend vacation and leaves Georgie in charge of the store. On the vacation, he proposes to Mee Maw, feeling she should marry him because he gave her grandson a job and let her granddaughter on his baseball team. Mee Maw, not liking that logic, rejects the proposal. Dale goes home early, only to find out that Georgie allowed his store to get robbed. Dale fires Georgie. In the season three finale, Mee Maw, thinking Dale only fired Georgie because he (Dale) was mad at her, screams at Dale and when that doesn't faze him, season three concludes with Mee Maw and Georgie throwing eggs at Dale's store.
13. The pool
Answer: Kaley Cuoco
Kaley Cuoco is best known for playing Penny, one of the main characters in the parent series, "The Big Bang Theory". In one episode of "Young Sheldon", after his P.E. class mandates that he takes a swimming class, Sheldon has a nightmare about being eaten by the pool.
In his nightmare, the pool talks to him, lures him in the water, and eats him. Kaley Cuoco does the voice of the pool in his nightmare.
14. June
Answer: Reba McEntire
Reba has had a successful career both as a country singer and as an actress. As a musician, she's sold over 75 million albums worldwide. As an actress, she's been nominated for a Golden Globe Award. In one episode of "Young Sheldon", she plays the role of Dale Ballard's ex-wife.
June meets Mee Maw at baseball practice and tells Mee Maw that she is Dale's ex-wife. Mee Maw then tells June that she is dating her ex-husband. June isn't bothered by this and they really enjoy talking with each other. They decide to meet again at a bar. What they don't know is, Dr. Sturgis has become very popular at that bar because he buys drinks for everyone. Dr. Sturgis sees the two women there, and Mee Maw gets nervous. Dr. Sturgis admits that he is Mee Maw's ex-boyfriend. This doesn't bother June either. In the end, June tells Dr. Sturgis not to give up on Connie, because she guarantees that Dale is going to do something wrong. June is proven to be right when Dale proposes to Mee Maw, gets angry when she rejects the proposal, goes home early, and fires Georgie.
15. The dentist
Answer: Ryan Stiles
Ryan Stiles is best known as one of the comedians on the popular improv show, "Whose Line is it Anyway?" He was also part of a touring version of this group called "Whose Live Anyway?" which tends to feature some adult humor because it isn't televised.
He was also on "The Drew Carey Show" and "Two and a Half Men". On "Young Sheldon", he plays the roles of a dentist who has to remove one of Sheldon's teeth and put Sheldon under anesthesia for this. Sheldon initially refuses to take drugs, but the dentist convinces him to take drugs by showing him the tool that he will use.
The dentist refuses to put Sheldon on anaesthesia again when Sheldon calls him up and asks him to so he can remember what Thoth said.
