Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was introduced in season 5?

Answer: Pastor Rob

In the second episode of the season, Sheldon, Missy, and Billy team up against Pastor Jeff in Sunday school to challenge him on why the Bible says that innocent babies were drowned. Pastor Jeff couldn't come up with any answers to satisfy the kids, so he hired a youth pastor to teach the Sunday School. After going through a few interviews that didn't go well, Pastor Rob comes in and stuns them by answering their questions in ways they have never seen before. Mary doesn't seem to like him at first, but Pastor Jeff loves him and hires him.

At the Sunday school, he blows their minds by dropping the Bible on the floor. He lets them know that he does not want to force them to believe what he believes. He also reveals that he knows virtually everything there is to know about each of the kids there (he knows that Sheldon is a genius scientist, he and Missy are brother and sister, she's a great baseball player, and Billy also plays baseball but not as well as her). When Sheldon and Missy tell their mom what happened at Sunday school, she is stunned.

Those other three characters were introduced before season five.
2. What does Georgie do in "Potential Energy and Hooch on a Park Bench?"

Answer: Drop out of high school

He didn't enjoy what he was learning in school, and he planned to become a successful businessman so he wouldn't need school. He talked to his favorite adult, his boss Dale, about this, and he revealed that he dropped out of school. So, Georgie drops out of school. This causes his father to kick him out of the house and his girlfriend to break up with him. He has to spend to night at his grandmother's house, who allows him to spend one night there.

Those other things happen in other episodes.
3. What song do Dr. Sturgis and Dr. Linkletter sing in "Potential Energy and Hooch on a Park Bench?"

Answer: Lollipop

Dr. Sturgis and Dr. Linkletter end up meeting up in a park to discuss life and their jobs. They were unhappy because they felt like they were doing the same thing over and over again. To help themselves feel better, Dr. Sturgis suggests that they sing.

He initially sings "Too Old to Work" by Joe Glazer, but Dr. Linkletter doesn't know it. Instead, they sing "Lollipop" by the Chordettes. Georgie and his girlfriend drive past them and she thinks they dropped out of high school.
4. In which episode do Sheldon and Missy get their own rooms?

Answer: Pish Posh and a Secret Back Room

When Georgie drops out of high school, his parents argue whether or not to boot him from the house. The family brainstorms ideas of what to do. Missy suggests that Georgie living in the garage would be the perfect compromise. So, Georgie takes all the stuff out of his old room and moves into the garage. Missy moves into Georgie's old room.

Sheldon takes all of his model trains and everything that he had in the garage and moves that stuff into his room.
5. What business does Mee Maw purchase because it has a secret room in the back, which is a gambling room?

Answer: Laundromat

Mee Maw had been going to the laundromat's gambling room as a customer for years, but the owner decided to retire and sell the place. Mee Maw bought it. She tells her boyfriend about it, who then tells his cop friend. Though the cop tells him that the police ignore these places, he and the police shut down Mee Maw's gambling room. The only reason he doesn't arrest her is because she's the girlfriend of his best friend.

Later on, Mee Maw convinced Georgie to quit his job at Dale's place to work for her. At first, he's confused as to why she bought a laundromat, but then she shows him the gambling room. Georgie comes up with a plan to re-open the gambling room that he thinks won't break the law. His plan is to give the customers teddy bears and toys like that instead of cash, and then they buy these toys back from the customers. At first, Mee Maw hates the idea, but Dale convinces her that it's a great idea, so they go with it. The cop comes in and tells them that this not a valid loophole and they're still breaking the law. He forces Mee Maw to pay ten percent of their earnings to him, saying that he will arrest her and jail her if she doesn't. She pays him entirely in quarters.
6. Sheldon, Dr. Sturgis, and Dr. Linkletter work on a science project together in season five.

Answer: True

This starts in "Stuffed Animals and a Sweet Southern Syzygy." Sheldon and Dr. Linkletter were working on a project together and they were stuck. Sheldon suggests they bring in Dr. Sturgis to help, but Dr. Linkletter doesn't like Dr. Sturgis and doesn't want his help. Sheldon asks his father about the situation. Using a football analogy, George suggests that Dr. Linkletter and Dr. Sturgis put their differences aside and work together for the benefit of science. At first, this doesn't go well as the two of them get into a big fight. Later on, they learn that antagonizing each other is the key to their success, just like Sheldon and Amy learned when they first worked together professionally on "The Big Bang Theory." Sheldon tells his father about when it didn't go well. He tells his father they were fighting, that he tried to convince them to work together for the good of team science, and that when they angrily asked where he got the horrible idea of calling it "Team science," he responded "My dad." He does not tell his father about when it turned around and got better. Adult Sheldon concludes this depressing episode by saying "He may not have been the world's greatest dad, but maybe we weren't the world's greatest kids."

They continue to work together throughout season five. Unfortunately, this particular storyline was never really finished. The last episode that focused on this was "Babies, Lies, and a Resplendent Cannoli." That's the last episode that focuses on this storyline because after this, the focus of "Young Sheldon" changes dramatically.
7. George Cooper has coitus with Brenda Sparks.

Answer: False

They start hanging out together secretly at the very end of the last episode of season 4 and continue to do so in season 5. George becomes basically a second father to Billy, whose real father had divorced his mom and moved away. Mee Maw finds out and becomes suspicious. However, they never get romantic with each other.
8. What well-known aspect of "The Big Bang Theory" version of Sheldon Cooper originated in "Money Laundering and a Cascade of Hormones?"

Answer: His use of the word "coitus"

Everyone who watches "The Big Bang Theory" knows that the word that Sheldon uses for sex is "coitus." We find out this started when he was 12. Missy asked questions about sex at Sunday School. Pastor Rob tells the other adults at work about this, and they decide that it's best for the parents to talk to their kids about sex before they learn it anywhere else. Mary tries to talk to Sheldon and Missy about it. Missy refuses to listen and goes to her room, while Sheldon tells his mom that he already knows how sex works and he tells her exactly what happens when people are attracted to each other. Later in the episode, we find out that several parents are angry at Pastor Jeff because of this. Dr. Sturgis loses his job at the grocery store by asking a co-worker some questions about sex. We also find out that Missy loses most of her so-called friends because she was the one who brought it up at Sunday School (I question whether or not these kids were really her friends to begin with, but that's not really discussed on the show).

Sheldon learns how much of a fuss the word "sex" causes, so he takes out his thesaurus to find a less-infuriating synonym. He found the word "coitus," and from then on, that became the word that he used for this.
9. Who is the only "Big Bang Theory" character other than Sheldon and Amy to do voiceover narration on the show?

Answer: Howard

This happens in "An Introduction to Engineering and a Glob of Hair Gel." Sheldon wanted to talk about engineering and why he hates it so much, so he invited his engineering friend to do a brief speech about engineering to begin the episode.

In the episode, we learn that Sheldon had a strict engineering professor. This professor assigned the class to design a bridge. Sheldon completed his assignment early and submitted it, but the professor told him that his work was incorrect and he tore it up. Sheldon worked harder and harder and harder, but the professor tore up everything that he submitted. This made him more and more frustrated. Finally, while working outside and noticing the wind blowing away his papers, he realized that the problem was that he wasn't factoring in the wind factor. He comes to class convinced that he finally has the correct answer, but is late to class and locked out of the classroom. Sheldon had enough and he dropped the class and hated engineering forever.

Howard is angry to learn that this is the origin of Sheldon's hatred of engineering, which he thinks means that all of the "abuse" that Sheldon gave him on "The Big Bang Theory" was not his fault. Sheldon tells him that, while he already hated engineering before he met Howard, Howard worsened his hatred of engineering. Howard had forgotten what was revealed in "The Big Bang Theory" episode "The Friendship Turbulence," which was that Howard actually started the ongoing feud between him and Sheldon by calling Sheldon "CP3Herman" and by sabotaging one of Sheldon's presentations.

"Penny" is not the correct answer because, while Kaley Cuoco lends her voice to one episode, she is not voicing the character of "Penny" in that episode.
10. "The Yips and an Oddly Hypnotic Bohemian" is the last baseball episode.

Answer: True

Missy started playing baseball in season three to impress a boy that she liked. She got the boy and became a star pitcher. Her baseball-playing became an ongoing theme of season three. However, after season three, there are only two more episodes where we see her on the baseball field. One of those was in season four, when she had her period.

In the season four finale, she and the boy broke up. "The Yips and an Oddly Hypnotic Bohemian" let us know that she continued to play baseball after the breakup, but after this episode, we never see her on the baseball field again.
11. "An Expensive Glitch and a Goof Off Room" is the final appearance of Sam and June.

Answer: False

In season five, Sheldon complains to President Hagemeyer that he has nothing to do in the hours between classes. To keep him happy, she gives him his own dorm, which is a single dorm with a bathroom. Sheldon sees one of his classmates, Sam, studying outside. She tells him that she couldn't study in her dorm because there was a sock on the door, so Sheldon invites her to study in his dorm. She initially accepts, but she gets mad when she sees that Sheldon has his own bedroom and she does not. She gets even more mad when he reveals that he has his own bathroom, which she definitely does not. Even though Sheldon allows her to use the bedroom and even the bathroom, she gets mad at him out of jealousy and walks out. Later in the episode, he tells her that she can study in his room whenever she wants. This time she does.

Then, two other students overhear that he has a room available and ask if they can use it. Sheldon allows them to do so. Pretty soon, a lot of students want to use his room, so he makes a schedule to allow them times they can use it. What he doesn't know is that almost all of these students were using the room to have coitus on his bed, not for studying. The only one who actually was using it for studying was Sam. Eventually, his father figures it out and his parents tell him, and he stops allowing other people to use the room.

Meanwhile, June won $11,000 at the gambling room due to a glitch. Mee Maw didn't have the money to pay her that much, so she made June a partial owner of the gambling room. June makes some changes to the gambling room, approving a lot of Georgie's idea that Mee Maw had been shutting down.

Both of these characters appear very little after this episode. However, they do appear. Sam appears in the opening scene of "A New Weather Girl and a Stay-at-Home Coddler." Though she's only in that one scene, her appearance shapes the whole plot of that episode. June appears at the Cooper house after George dies to pay her condolences and she's at the funeral.
12. Which of the following characters does not appear in "A Pink Cadillac and a Glorious Tribal Dance?"

Answer: Gary

Mr. Lundy, played by Jason Alexander, is a drama teacher at the high school and real estate salesman. In this episode, he sells make-up and he convinces Mary to join his sales team. Mary starts off struggling. She eventually improves her sales skills by selling make-up to her Bible study group, but she worries about the morality of what she is doing. One night, she had a nightmare that Missy stole her make-up, put it on, and looked terrible. That was the end of her selling make-up on the show. This was Mr. Lundy's final appearance on the show, although Jason Alexander directed an episode in season six.

Ms. Hutchins appears briefly in the episode as one of Mary's potential clients.

Meanwhile, Sheldon sneaks out of the house to go on a bus to a comic book convention. There, he meets up with his friend Nathan, who'd previously shown him the Star Trek episode that Georgie taped over in "A Live Chicken, A Fried Chicken, and Holy Matrimony."

Gary is the donor whom Sheldon convinced to donate money to the university in season four, and who funded Sheldon's database project in season six. He does not appear in season five.
13. Heather B. and Heather M. are Missy's best friends. She talks about them a lot but they never appear on the show.

Answer: False

Missy talks about them a lot and we very rarely see them. However, we finally see them in "A Lot of Band-Aids and the Cooper Surrender." They're not her friends. They're bullies who pick on her because she has leg hair. (Oddly, we just saw her legs a few seconds before this and I didn't see any hair on them.) Their names aren't mentioned while they're on screen.

The part of the episode where we learn their names is the closing credits. That is when we learn that the girl with the light blue shirt and pink binder is Heather B., while the girl with the blue floral dress, pink shirt underneath, and blue binder is Heather M.
14. What are the names of Sheldon's friends at the college in season five?

Answer: Darren, Oscar, and Abby

Sheldon tries to study in his dorm, but the noise next door disturbs him. He goes next door, intending to tell the kids to turn down the noise, but then he finds out they were playing a video game and he wants to play with them. They allow him to do so and they become friends. With his father's permission (but not his mother's permission), he stays in his dorm overnight to continue to hang out with them. His mother eventually finds out and hurries over to the school. Sheldon had gotten sick from eating too much junk food. Mary sees his friends carrying him to his room so he can throw up in his bathroom.

Darren and Oscar appear again in the 100th episode. Abby is mentioned in that episode but does not appear in it: her only appearance on the show is a brief one at the video game night in the first episode where we see these characters ("A lot of Band-Aids and the Cooper Surrender").

Evan and Joaquin are Sheldon's college friends in season seven, not season five. Mandy was never Sheldon's friend: she was Georgie's first wife. Billy was never at the college, Tam does not appear at all in season five, and Brenda is Billy's mother. Gary is the donor who donated money to the university after a dinner with Sheldon, his father, and President Hagemeyer. Dale is the baseball coach, owner of the sporting goods store, and Mee Maw's boyfriend for most of the second half of the show's run. Victoria is the first name of the first teacher we ever saw on the show.
15. Who appeared in the 100th episode?

Answer: Paige

Sheldon attended a presentation that was given by a very famous scientist who was visiting East Texas Tech. Paige visited the university with this professor because she'd been working with him. Sheldon, who'd frequently been jealous of Paige because she was more advanced than him, was jealous of her again because of this.

Things change later in the episode. Paige shows up at Sheldon's dorm. It turns out that she has no friends besides Sheldon and Missy, whom she rarely sees, and this professor does not respect Paige's intelligence and just uses her to bring in money for the university that she is at. She came to Sheldon because she thought he'd be the one person who would understand. She later finds out that Sheldon has friends at the university (Darren and Oscar) and when he had to talk to a donor, it went great. This makes her even more sad and she walks away.

Later in the episode, she returns to the dorm requesting Sheldon's permission to sleep in his dorm. Sheldon grants this and decides to make a care package for her. Missy sees him doing this and when he reveals that he's doing this for Paige and that she's having serious problems, Missy tells her mom "I'm worried about Paige." George asks "Who's Paige?" which is baffling since he had met her in three previous episodes when she came to his house and she'd even slept there in two of those episodes. Mary drives the kids to the university to check on Paige. When they get there, she's gone and has left a note. The note said that she left so she could walk on the street and do some soul-searching, but she was happy for Sheldon. Adult Sheldon narrated that Paige had walked the streets for a few days and had been missing, but eventually she returned home to her mom.
