Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of the season, Sheldon and his mom have an argument about what?

Answer: Mental health

After Dr. Sturgis goes into a mental hospital, and Mary sees her son behaving the same way Dr. Sturgis was the last time we saw him, Mary becomes concerned about Sheldon's mental health. She buys a book about children's mental health and she becomes even more concerned.

She decides to drive Sheldon to school while Missy and Georgie ride with dad, so she can talk to her son about mental health. Sheldon believes that Mary is admitting to him that SHE is going crazy, so he gets a book from the school library about mental health. By reading the books they get, they both become increasingly concerned about each other's mental health.

They end up having a conversation at night. It turns into a heated argument, to the point where Sheldon delivered one of my all-time favorite lines: "You talk to an invisible man in the sky who grants wishes! If anyone's mental it's you!" They go to a therapist, who convinces them to communicate. Mary admits that Dr. Sturgis is in a mental hospital and she is worried Sheldon will end up like him.
2. Does Georgie find some success as a salesman in the first episode of the season?

Answer: Yes

Georgie buys Texas snow globes from an store that's going out of business. The store is selling them for $1 and Georgie plans to sell them for $5. He asks his dad for help, but his dad scoffs at the idea. At first, Georgie fails. He can't even sell one to his own grandmother.

This leads to more people in his family scoffing at him. However, just when he's about to give up, he decides to try to prove people wrong. He comes across a customer who tells Georgie about a time it snowed in Texas. Georgie uses that story to sell the Texas snow globes.

At the end of the episode, after dad continues scoffing at him, Georgie shows him all the money he made. Georgie later gets a job at a sporting goods store. Later in the season, Georgie loses that job.
3. While Dr. Sturgis is in the hospital, Sheldon takes whose class?

Answer: Dr. Linkletter

When Sheldon finds out that Dr. Sturgis is in the hospital, he decides to skip his high school classes and hide in a broom closet in the library and read books to do some learning. His P.E. teacher, who is also his dad's co-worker, tells his dad that he hasn't been to class. His dad finds out from his friend, Tam, where he is. To solve the problem, Mee Maw lets Sheldon take Dr. Linkletter's class. Sheldon and Dr. Linkletter end up not liking each other at first, but then Sheldon wants to attend a lecture that Dr. Linkletter is giving. Sheldon's Mee Maw refuses to take him to the lecture because she knows Dr. Linkletter wants to use the opportunity to get to know her better and start a romantic relationship with her, and she doesn't want that. Sheldon, not understanding this, persists, but she keeps refusing. He then tells her that she's selfish. She spanks him. He then asks his parents to take them to the lecture. When they refuse, he calls them selfish, so they ground him. He ends up taking a bus to visit Dr. Sturgis, but leaves a note behind in Morse code. The family decodes the note, with Mee Maw being the first to figure it out, and they call the police. A police car pulls over the bus and they take Sheldon home. On the bus, a woman convinces Sheldon that he was wrong. So he shows his family a "Star Trek" episode to apologize. They don't understand the point, but eventually they accept the apology.

Dr. Linkletter and Dr. Sturgis are enemies due to the fact that Dr. Linkletter wants a romantic relationship with Mee Maw, but Dr. Sturgis already has one. Dr. Linkletter pursues Mee Maw even while she's dating Dr. Sturgis, angering both of them. However, Dr. Linkletter has catually stood up for Dr. Sturgis at times. When Sheldon told Dr. Linkletter that Dr. Sturgis plagiarized his work, Dr. Linkletter sided with Dr. Sturgis. He didn't believe Sheldon provided sufficient evidence of plagiarism and he didn't want Dr. Sturgis's career ruined.
4. During season 3, Missy starts playing what sport?

Answer: Baseball

Missy has a crush on a boy who likes baseball, so she asks her dad to teach her how to throw a baseball and to teach her some baseball facts. Her dad does just that, but when she finds out that the boy she liked already had a girlfriend, she throws an apple at him.

She later shows off her throwing arm at a dunk tank, where she repeatedly dunks Pastor Jeff. After learning how good her throwing arm is, she asks her dad to put her in a baseball team. He tries, but the coach refuses to have a girl on his team. Mee Maw then tries to get her on the team.

The coach agrees to let Missy on the baseball team only if Mee Maw dates him. Missy becomes the star player of the baseball team. Initially, she gets bullied by other people in the town for this. Not only do the boys bully her, but even other girls at school bully her for this.

She intially decides to quit the baseball team, but when Mrs. Sparks joins in on the bullying, Mary demands that Missy keep playing baseball to prove them wrong. In the end, Missy stands up to one of the bullies (an opposing male pitcher who tried to hit her with the baseball). Later in the season, she reluctantly strikes out the boy she liked, but he holds her hand anyway, exciting her.
5. During which episode is Dr. Sturgis released from the hospital?

Answer: A Pineapple and the Bosom of Male Friendship

When Dr. Sturgis gets out of the hospital, he has dinner with the Coopers. Although Mary tells them not to bring up his time in the hospital, he tells them that he's happy to answer any questions they have about it, so Sheldon, Georgie, and Missy each ask one. The next day, Mary convinces George to take Dr. Sturgis to a bar. There, he buys drinks for everyone at the bar.
6. What is the name of Mee Maw's boyfriend during most of season three?

Answer: Dale Ballard

Dale Ballard, played by Craig T. Nelson, is a baseball coach and an owner of a sporting goods store. He coaches a boys baseball team, but he lets Missy on the team as long as Mee Maw dates him. He also give Georgie a job at his store. He expects Mee Maw to marry him just because of what he's done for her family.

When she says "You gave my grandson a job and I'm supposed to marry you!?" apparently forgetting that he also let Missy on the baseball team, he goes home and fires Georgie. The season ends with Mee Maw and Georgie throwing eggs at Dale's store. One can assume Mee Maw and Dale have probably broken up.
7. In "The Sin of Greed and a Chimichanga from Chi-Chi's", what two people does the university want full-time?

Answer: Sheldon and George

Dr. Sturgis takes George to a bar and buys drinks for him. He then tells George that Sheldon is doing extremely well in his class, and the university wants him there full-time. Dr. Sturgis also says that the university wants to offer George a coaching job so he can be there for Sheldon, and that the university pays a lot more money than the high school. The principal of the high school doesn't want to lose Sheldon because he single-handedly gets more funding for the school with his high test scores. The principal then decides that he wants to make Sheldon and George so happy, they want to stay. He then tells some of his teachers to be extra nice to Sheldon, but not the P.E. teacher. Some of the things the school does for them include, giving George a parking spot right by the door, giving him a new chair and a golden whistle, the science teacher watching "Star Trek" in class, and the principal giving Sheldon the key to the faculty restroom, which is cleaner and emptier than the other ones. The PE teacher gets confused because he doesn't understand what's going on.

Mary thinks that, because of these things, Georgie getting a new job, and Missy watching a TV show where a character swims in money, that the sin of greed has entered her family. So she confiscates everything that's "sinful" (the TV and Georgie's music are two examples). The rest of the family decide to live with Mee Maw to get away from Mary's craziness. Mee Maw then confronts Mary about this. Mary admits that she's not ready for Sheldon to go to college. She convinces the family to come home, but she also makes some adjustments. She adjusts the TV so Missy can only watch shows about God, and she tapes over Georgie's music so that his hard rock and metal music is replaced with church music.
8. Initially, who is the only one of the Coopers Mrs. Sparks invites to her son's birthday party?

Answer: Missy

Mrs. Sparks invites Missy to the party, but not Sheldon. Mary retaliates by asking Pastor Jeff to give a sermon on loving your neighbors. Because of the sermon, Mrs. Sparks invites Sheldon to the party. To Mary's surprise, Sheldon doesn't want to go. He decides that he will only go if he's dressed as Mr. Spock and can bring his tricorder. Mary eventually reluctantly accepts that.

Sheldon ends up hanging out in the chicken coop. He and Billy, who were initially enemies because Billy used to bully him, actually have fun talking with each other in the chicken coop. Mary eventually confesses to Mrs. Sparks that she was worried Sheldon may not have any friends later in life, which is why she went to so much trouble to get Sheldon invited to the party. Mrs. Sparks admits that she has similar worries about Billy.

The two moms are happy that their sons are having fun in the chicken coop, but Mary has to take Sheldon home when he screams that a chicken pooped in his hand.
9. Mee Maw breaks up with Dr. Sturgis.

Answer: False

Dr. Sturgis breaks up with Mee Maw because he feels she deserves a boyfriend who hasn't been in a mental hospital. This sends Mee Maw into a tailspin where she does a lot of drinking for a while. She dates other men during the course of the season, but by the end of the season she dislikes all of them (but she never disliked Dr. Sturgis).
10. In "A Party Invitation, Football Grapes, and an Earth Chicken", who says "My mom is on Valium"?

Answer: Billy

This phrase is similar to a phrase that appears in the song "21st Century Digital Boy" by a famous punk rock band called Bad Religion. The original version of the song came out in 1990, so it would have been a new song during the time period that this show takes place. Season three of "Young Sheldon" takes place during 1991.
