Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who does Sheldon dedicate his graduation speech to?

Answer: Missy

Despite the fact that he was graduating from high school at the age of 11 and was the valedictorian and on the news, he wasn't very happy about it. He was scared of all the change that he was about to go through. The one person who was able to help him was Missy.

She understood what he was going through because she was also graduating from a school, only she was graduating from elementary school. She, too, had fears about all the changes that would come. Her advice was "Be scared and do it anyway." This convinced Sheldon to dedicate his speech to her.

In return, when Missy's graduating class sang "This land is your land," she looked at him.
2. Whose voice is heard for the first time on Young Sheldon at the end of "Graduation"?

Answer: Amy

"Graduation" ends with adult Sheldon narrating that he and Amy named their first child "Leonard". He pauses for a moment to let the shock value sink in. He knew that most people would assume he named the kid after his best friend, Leonard Hofstadter. Then he reveals that he actually named the kid after Leonard Nimoy, and wanted the name the kid "Leonard Nimoy Cooper" but Amy wouldn't let him. This is when we hear her say "Be happy I let you name him Leonard!" That was another huge shock from the audience. In the first three seasons of the show, we never heard any of the "Big Bang Theory" characters in the narration. We heard Kaley Cuoco's voice in season 3 but she wasn't voicing Penny. So, after three seasons, we all accepted that we'd never hear their voices or see them. Hearing Amy's voice in the season 4 premiere was a shock to many fans of both shows.

The good news is, this isn't the last time that she or any "Big Bang Theory" would be heard in the narration. The bad news is, it didn't happen often. She did one more voiceover narration in season 5, episode 16. Sheldon and Amy both appear onscreen in "Memoir".

The only other character whose voice is ever heard on the show is Howard, in season 5, episode 7. It baffles me that they got Howard on the show, but never Leonard or Penny. Leonard and Penny were much closer to Sheldon than Howard was.
3. What happens to Missy in the second episode of season four?

Answer: She has her period

Raegan Revord (Missy's actress) was noticeably taller in season 4 than she was in earlier seasons. The writers couldn't just ignore that fact and have Missy stay young forever. The character had to grow up like the actress was doing.

The only adult around to handle it is her father. Initially, he freaks out because he has no idea what to do. He goes to the drug store, where me meets a friendly cashier who closes her register just to help him out. It's a wholesome scene and that cashier may be my favorite character that only appears in one scene of one episode.
4. Whose face does Sheldon see in training wheels and whose voice does he hear?

Answer: Mary

One of my favorite episodes has Sheldon learning how to ride a bike without training wheels. He crashes into a tree and breaks his arm. While his arm is healing, his mom helps him out in every way that she can. The climax of the episode is the second time he tries to ride a bike in the episode. He suddenly hears his mom's voice, though she is not around. Then he looks into the training wheels. Suddenly, they take his mom's face and speak to him in her voice. They warn him that he'll get injured again if he doesn't put them back on.

The point of this scene is that the training wheels are just like his mom. They both hold him up and keep him safe. However, he doesn't want to be protected like this anymore. He wants to grow up, take chances, make his own mistakes, go through his own bumps and bruises, and be stronger for it. The episode ends with Sheldon attempting to ride a bicycle the third time. This time, he succeeds and rides for eleven miles.
5. Who appears in two episodes of season four, the 4th one and the 16th one?

Answer: Paige

Paige is a girl who is the same age as Sheldon, but she's more academically advanced. Sheldon's jealousy of her is a recurring theme in the episodes that she is in. In her first appearance of season 4, she appears at Bible camp. Sheldon does everything he can to try and make her feel bad. This doesn't end well.

In the 16th episode, Missy thinks that Sheldon has a crush on her. He consults Dr. Sturgis, who also says that. When he tells this to Paige, she tells him to close her eyes and kiss her. Then, he draws a mustache on his face. It was a while before anyone told him that, but he liked how he looked with a mustache.
6. In the sixth episode, what news does Mary get that she doesn't like?

Answer: Dr. Sturgis won't be at the college

In the season 3 finale, Mary finally decides to let Sheldon go to college. What convinced her to let him go was a video tape of all of his teachers saying that he's ready for college. Perhaps the most convincing testimony came from Dr. Sturgis, who, despite having recently been in a heated feud with Sheldon, told Mary that Sheldon was the best student he'd ever had and that the university would take good care of him.

In the sixth episode of season 4, Dr. Sturgis calls the Cooper home to tell Mary that he won't be at the university because he got a job working for a super collider. Mary was unhappy, as he'd been the main reason she let Sheldon go there. She was also unhappy because she thought Sheldon would be upset when Dr. Sturgis tells him the news. This leads to a funny scene where she overhears Sheldon saying on the phone "A super collider? Well you can't say "No" to that." Her response was "I give up."
7. This character appeared zero times in season 1, twice in season 2, and three times in season 3. Beginning in season 4, this character becomes a more prominent recurring character. Who is he?

Answer: Dr. Linkletter

When Dr. Sturgis leaves the university, Dr. Linkletter is assigned to be Sheldon's advisor and looks out for him while he's at school. He doesn't seem to like Sheldon very much but Sheldon loves him. He is romantically interested in Mee Maw and he doesn't like Dr. Sturgis.

He's known to play tricks on Sheldon, either to get Sheldon away from him or in attempt to get closer to Mee Maw. He has talked to every adult in the Cooper family on the phone. However, the only person in the family besides Sheldon who ever meets him is Mee Maw.
8. Which character is introduced in the ninth episode of the season?

Answer: President Hagemeyer

President Hagemeyer, played by Wendie Malick, is the president of East Texas Tech. In her first appearance on the show, she invites Sheldon to speak to a donor. Sheldon is the chosen one because he is the youngest and smartest child at the school. He doesn't want to do it but his father convinces him. His father invites Billy over so that Sheldon and Billy can practice their social skills. The donor is named Gary and he's played by Dave Foley. When Sheldon tells him what theory he believes in, the donor says some things to deliberately provoke an angry response from Sheldon. Sheldon tried to hold it in like his father trained him to, but in the end, Sheldon snaps and says "You're not a scientist. You're just a rich man that no one will be honest to because everyone wants your money." This makes President Hagemeyer nervous.

However, the donor appreciates Sheldon's honesty and gives the university a ton of money. As a thank you, they use some of it to by a new anti-static chair for Sheldon as well as tickets for his father to see the Houston Oilers (an actual football team that existed when this show takes place) from the front row, the 50 yard line, and free parking.
9. This character appeared in one episode per year in the first five seasons. In the 4th season, he appears in the tenth episode. Who is he?

Answer: Mr. Lundy

Mr. Lundy is a professional actor, high school drama teacher, real estate salesman, and make-up salesman.

In season 4, Georgie wants to make an exercise video and sell it for money. He goes to Mr. Lundy for acting advice so he can do it well. Mr. Lundy wants in on the idea. He proposes an idea that's more complicated than Georgie's idea was, but Georgie agrees. They go to Mee Maw to get money to do it. She reluctantly agrees at first, but she and Georgie quit because Mr. Lundy wanted 80% of the profits and wasn't going to settle for less. Mr. Lundy carried on with the idea. He got David Hasselhoff and a bunch of pretty girls in bikinis to do the video. It made him rich, but then he used all the money to make a musical movie about his life. The episode concludes with adult Sheldon narrating "He is poor to this day."
10. Who is the only Simpson that Mary liked?

Answer: O.J.

When Sheldon proposes an idea for a club for people who hate Dr. Linkletter, Mary tells him that a club dedicating to hating people won't work. Sheldon responds by telling her that she started the club for people who hate the Simpsons. She says it's not a club and they just write letters to get it taken off the air "and it's gonna happen any day now." As if that wasn't funny enough, adult Sheldon narrates "Ironically, the only Simpson that my mother did love is O.J.. Time is funny that way." IMO this is the funniest bit of dialogue in the history of "Young Sheldon".
11. Who divorced his wife in season 4?

Answer: Herschel

In the 12th episode, Mary sees Brenda talking to Pastor Jeff. She learns that Brenda is unhappy and Billy is doing badly in school. In the end, Brenda confesses "Herschel moved out."

The actor who played Herschel was Billy Gardell. After season 2 was over, he quit this show to focus on a new show that he had gotten where he was the star. This was called "Bob Hearts Abishola". To deal with this situation, the writers decided to make it so that he moved out. The effect that this has on Brenda and Billy is seen in the 15th episode of this season and is also seen in some episodes of later seasons.

The other three men also got divorced during their lives, but not during season 4.
12. This character, who appeared in four total episodes of "Young Sheldon", appeared in the 6th episode of season 4. Who is she?

Answer: Sam

Sam is a student at East Texas Tech. She's in Dr. Sturgis's class with Sheldon, They first meet when they are assigned to work on a group project in season 3. Their second meeting was at the college in season four. Mary took Sheldon there for orientation.

While she was waiting for him to finish up, Sam showed up and recognized her. Mary didn't go to college, so Sam invited her to a party to show her what college life is like. In the end, Mary says "I love college."
13. Which actress appeared in the 13th episode?

Answer: Marla Gibbs

When Mee Maw gets in a car accident, she has to ride the church bus to get around while her car is being repaired. She spends much if the episode denying that she needs this, but she eventually calls her daughter and asks for the phone number of the church bus. On the church bus, she makes some new friends. One of them is played by Marla Gibbs.
14. When the Coopers get audited, who represents them in their victory?

Answer: Sheldon

The IRS was going to make the Coopers pay four extra dollars. Sheldon objected because he knew he didn't make a mistake. He called the IRS and told them they made a mistake. They checked the Coopers' files and audited them for the last three years. George gets angry at Sheldon and hires a CPA to do it right.

The CPA tells him that the tax returns were "Immaculate" (another word for "Perfect") and that Sheldon should represent the family in the audit. George apologizes to Sheldon and lets Sheldon do that.

Sheldon seems to be in trouble when he admits that his father buys him a model train every time he does their tax returns. The IRS thinks that Sheldon is accepting payment for doing this though he is not certified, which violates the law. This makes Sheldon feel terrible, and walk out, but then George has a private conversation with Sheldon, where as he usually does, he tells Sheldon exactly what Sheldon needs to hear to cheer him up.

Sheldon convinces the IRS that the parents let him do the taxes to teach him economics.

The train wasn't payment for unlicensed work, but a reward for successfully completing his economics lesson. Sheldon wins.
15. This character didn't appear often in season four, but he was the central character of the 17th episode, "A Black Hole". Who is he?

Answer: Dr. Sturgis

Because of COVID and the fact that Wallace Shawn lived in New York, he wasn't often able to make it to the studio where they film Young Sheldon. He appeared in a few episodes earlier in the season but only by phone calls to New York, though the show pretends they were phone calls to a super collider in Texas where the character worked during season 4.

When they did the 17th episode, COVID restrictions were reduced and he was allowed to go to the studio. Because of this, they did in episode that was all about him. He's gotten fired from the super collider, so he moves to Medford to catch up with his ex-girlfriend, Mee Maw, whom he is on good terms with. He gets as a bagger at the grocery store in Medford. The Coopers invite him to dinner. They start talking about black holes. This leads to us seeing several scenes of "Alternate universes." The funniest one is the one that's the exact opposite of their normal life: Sheldon and Missy's personalities are switched (He's a regular kid who wants a puppy and she is a genius who loves Dr. Sturgis), George and Mary's personalities are switched (he's a preacher and she's a woman who goes to night clubs and gets drunk), Georgie becomes bald (he normally loves his hair), and Dr. Sturgis and Mee Maw's personalities are switched (he becomes a normal Texan and she becomes a normal New Yorker).
