Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lakeside Limbo
Answer: Ellie
While "Donkey Kong Country" and "Donkey Kong Country 2" had Rambi the Rhino take pole position as the most common animal friend to assist the lead Kongs, he doesn't return for "Dixie's Double Trouble". Instead, he's replaced by an equally bulky Ellie the Elephant, who makes her debut in the very first level of the game, Lake Orangatanga's Lakeside Limbo.
Her first crate shows up about halfway through this straight-forward location.
2. Murky Mill
Answer: Ellie
This level, found on Lake Orangatanga, is the first in which Dixie and Kiddy can transform into their new friend, taking on her likeness to navigate the structure on the lakeshore. The catch, however, is that Ellie, being an elephant, is afraid of mice. Naturally the mill is infested with them, so extra care needs to be taken to avoid heading straight into foes. To avoid this, Ellie can pick up barrels with her nose and toss them ahead.
3. Squirt's Showdown
Answer: Ellie
The boss level of Cotton Top Cove, Squirt's Showdown will call upon Ellie's distinct ability to suck in water and shoot it as though it were ammunition. The boss found here, a giant slug, is able to emerge from and recede into a waterfall, so being able to strike with ranged precision and evade the boss' attacks on narrow platforms will be critical. Ellie's not the most agile, but if you make it work you'll move on and access Mekanos.
4. Tidal Trouble
Answer: Enguarde
One of only two animal buddies to make it through all three SNES games, Enguarde returns in "Dixie's Double Trouble" and can be used as early as Lake Orangutanga, appearing in the game's third level, Tidal Trouble. In this stage, the Kong have to head along the lakeside navigating over and under obstructive pieces of a pier, all while swimming through rising and lowering water levels. Transforming into Enguarde partway through should help them power through certain foes.
5. Barbos's Barrier
Answer: Enguarde
Barbos's Barrier, the boss level of Razor Ridge, puts Enguarde front-and-center as the Kongs will need to transform into him to pass through the region. This boss, a giant sea urchin, will launch smaller foes at Enguarde and force some tricky underwater maneuvers. Only when the boss is open all the way will Enguarde be able to get a straight shot at its weak point and allow the Kongs to move on to Kaos Kore.
6. Poisonous Pipeline
Answer: Enguarde
Enguarde only appears in the first half of this late-game level found at the end of Kaos Kore. For this one, the Kongs need to navigate a flooded pipeline from start to finish, sinking lower and lower into the system (which they can do as Enguarde) before travelling back upwards to the finish as Dixie and Kiddy. Worse, the de facto poison found in this pipeline causes the player's left and right inputs to reverse, so you'll need to navigate backwards to succeed.
7. Springin' Spiders
Answer: Squawks
Squawks returns for his third bout against K. Rool in this game and the first opportunity to use his abilities is in Springin' Spiders, one of the levels located in Kremwood Forest. Though Dixie and Kiddy are able to make it to the finish without issue by riding atop the spiders of the level's name, they'll be able to transform into Squawks partway through the level and use him to accomplish some bonus level needs.
8. Low-G Labyrinth
Answer: Squawks
Both Squawks and his variant, Quawks, can be found in Low-G Labyrinth, partway through Mekanos. The former is used less in the level, appearing only in a bonus area that the Kongs can access on their own. Quawks, however, is the purple version of Squawks, and while he could spit items at enemies in "Donkey Kong Country 2", that ability is not retained for this game.
Instead, he can pick up and toss barrels at enemies while maneuvering in the air.
9. Swoopy Salvo
Answer: Squawks
Found in Krematoa, Swoopy Salvo shares the same aesthetic as some of the Kremwood Forest levels, forcing the Kongs up through hollow trees, but this one would be impossible to complete if not for Squawks (for the first half of the level) and careless enemies (for the remainder).
In it, upwards is the game; you need to ascend several platform-free stretches filled with swooping enemies, some of which will actually create platforms for you. Squawks, however, can just head on up as far as he can.
10. Fire-Ball Frenzy
Answer: Squitter
Appearing in seven different levels of "Donkey Kong Country 3", Squitter is probably the most-seen of the animal buddies in this game. He starts that run late, however, first appearing in Fire-Ball Frenzy in Mekanos. This appearance, however, is short-lived since he only manages to help for a bonus area. In this region, he also returns for Blazing Bazukas.
11. Creepy Caverns
Answer: Squitter
Found partway through KAOS Kore, Creepy Caverns is an underground level in which the Kongs need to avoid getting caught in the wrong Boo Barrels while still leveraging them to make their way through the level. Squitter will appear halfway through the level and he can be brought along a good portion of this latter half, being used explicitly to complete a bonus stage.
12. Tyrant Twin Tussle
Answer: Squitter
Found in Krematoa, the Tyrant Twin Tussle can be a frustrating one because the Kongs will always need to keep moving due to the unique enemies that get in the way along the route. Squitter, however, appears early on in this level (and is gone by the halfway point) and he can be a great boon to the Kongs because of his projectile webs; they'll keep the enemies at bay long enough to pass through that portion of the level with relative ease.
